      My daughter is almost 4yo (in a few weeks!) and have already learned a little while ago how to write her name, and recognize the letters from her name, I was so shocked and impressed when I saw it the first time! She sometimes mess up the order of the letters (Chloé is simple, but the h and l gets her a little confused), but I find it so impressive! TTQ: Ive just recently been diagnosed with ADHD and a BFRB after having it for all my life and never knowing. Ive found that to be really difficult and I know youve talked about your struggles with ADHD and dermatillomania so i'm just wondering how you felt when you were first diagnosed did you find it really validating or really overwhelming? Cause im experiencing both and dont know how to cope

    • @hambair7164
      @hambair7164 2 года назад +32

      While I’m not an expert in the topic at all, I will say a few things. First, everything you feel about getting a diagnosis is valid. It’s an emotional roller coaster. My biggest advice is to think about the good, validating parts of it when you can. When I can’t think of the good, I like to think about how a diagnosis can really only help in a lot of situations. Yes, it’s scary and emotional and a lot, but it also opens up a realm of possibilities for treatment and an easier future. Plus, the diagnosis doesn’t change or define you. You are the same person you were before you got diagnosed. The diagnosis can be a lot, at least for me, because it brings a degree of reality to the situation. But it’s important to remember that that reality has already existed for you. All the diagnosis does is open up more opportunities for help

    • @livs7953
      @livs7953 2 года назад +19

      I know you’re asking Colleen. But I thought I’d give you my two cents, because I went through the same thing (so you’re not alone!!).
      For me, it was super validating at first. I attribute that to me having had to convince the people around me that I was not okay. I was really good at hiding my symptoms, and because I had super high anxiety, I was reaaaally good at masking. But when I hit my lowest, nobody believed me because I was STILL masking, and I wasn’t someone that “looked” unwell. Just goes to show that disorders can be entirely invisible and we need to treat everyone with respect because we never know what a person’s going through.
      So the moment I received my diagnoses and had the words and labels to describe what I was going through, I felt immediately validated and I was super relieved to know that it wasn’t all in my head.
      A little while later, I’m still super thankful to know the words to describe the things I struggle with, but of course that brings along feeling overwhelmed. There’s a surplus of information we have left to learn about these things and we’re learning new things every day, and there’s no one correct answer to the problems we face. For that reason, the diagnoses are overwhelming. There’s a lot of trial and error involved in our lives and it can be incredibly frustrating to not know how to fix our problems right now.
      Point being, feeling both at the same time I think is super justifiable. Your feelings are valid, and you are definitely not alone.
      I don’t know if any of this made sense because it’s basically just word vomit from another adhd-er. But I hope you know you are supported, you can do this, and it’ll feel more manageable soon ❤️ sending hugs!!

    • @sngray11
      @sngray11 2 года назад +10

      I have ADHD, dermatillomania, anxiety, and depression. When I was first diagnosed, I felt overwhelmed because like you, I never knew that I had any mental health issues. But after working with a psychiatrist and a therapist to work through all of my emotions, as well as come up with a cohesive plan to manage my mental health issues, it became less overwhelming and much more empowering. I was able to understand myself and get to know myself on a deeper level as well as learned and developed new skills to help me manage my mental health. So in the end, it has been a blessing in disguise for me. Although it is scary and overwhelming once you first receive a diagnosis, it gives you a starting point to being able to understand yourself better and it enables mental health professionals to be able to better assist you to get to a place where your mind and your daily life becomes much more manageable. We are all unique individuals, and our journeys are all different, but that is what my experience has been thus far. I don’t know if you have a therapist currently, but if you don’t, I highly recommend getting one. They can help you to process your emotions around being diagnosed, as well as help teach you skills and tools that you can use to manage your ADHD and BFRB. I am proud of you for having the strength and courage to share what you are going through with others. I wish you all the best and know that you aren’t alone. 💞

    i feel the same way as the person who commented mentioning her emotions. i feel like watching colleen through so many years and stages and events has really helped me mature. she talks so openly about how she feels and what led her to feel that way. i think i’ve learned how to process and go through emotions because of colleen and im really grateful for that. especially since i’ve been watching her since it was like 11 and now i’m 18 and have learned so much solely from colleen. love you so very much xoxo

    Love the comment about expressing your emotions. I am a 55 YO woman and have come to realize that I struggle to express my emotions and holding them in has been a source of pain and mental anguish over the years. I grew up in a home where expressed emotions were scary, and seeing someone talk through tears and anxiety in a healthy way has been really helpful. Thank you.

    Omg Colleen, I totally relate to your family/friends calling you emotional... People in my friend group growing up used to tell everyone that I feel everything, sometimes at the same time. I've tried to reclaim that description as I've gotten older because I would way rather express myself than lock it all up inside, which I def considered when people "made fun" of me (even though it wasn't meant maliciously). Yay to expressing yourself! Feelings are meant to be felt!!

    Tortilla Talk :
    Colleen I want you to know You are strong. Don’t listen to the doubts. To the voices telling you that you don’t do enough, that you don’t matter, that nothing will ever change, that what you’re doing day after day after day won’t make a difference. Those aren’t true statements
    Let me tell you truth. Pulling up the covers and kissing a little one goodnight after the hardest day of your life matters. Smiling when you have tears in your eyes matters. Searching for bugs in the hot sun with Flynn when you have a list of things to complete matters. Making shows for our entertainment matters. Walking into your office editing for hours matters. Walking out the doors so that you can buy that grilled cheese and applesauce matters. Pumping milk for the twins and baking bread and vlogging everyday matters. Changing the laundry load and scrubbing the counters and listening to stories from the day and going to bed exhausted because you gave and gave all matters. I bet I can go on and on about how you matter to everyone around you

    I love how you left off on how important mental health is to talk about. I have always been made fun of for how sensitive I can be ( I literally have your “I cry a lot” shirt and I’m obsessed) but it seemed like I would never be able to open up about how I felt. My mom and cousin have ALWAYS been judge free and been my shoulders to cry on but any time other than that I just try to suppress my feelings and move on.

    Not a question but I have some advise! I'm a part time teacher and I teach children how to read and recognise the alphabet. I noticed that when you and Flynn were writing the letters you called it an F ("Eff"), which can be confusing to younger children. You should start off with phonics, and thus he will find it easier to spell and pronounce words one day! For example instead of spelling cat as "see-ay-tee ", try spelling it "kuh-ah-tuh".

    I think this is the first time I have ever watched a video and felt right away that you said something that completely got to me and I understand. My whole life I have been told I am too emotional and it was always said in a bad way. Now that I am older I have learned that I have a lot of empathy for people and there is no shame in that. I have learned that it’s fine to feel my feelings and not to be ashamed of them. Keep being who you are, love your videos! 💕
