I just have to say these studies are incredible. If I was to suggest any other ideas for future studies I might say aerial land shots or light. Light might seem odd but it could be simple scenes like a church floor where the light is casting different hues on the floor.
Super great tutorial, thanks, Jess! This was so calming! I fell asleep during it...only to wake up and realising that I had almost missed the end. I re-watched it twice, painting along. I am a new subscriber, exploring your past catalogue (I found you through the Strathmore workshops from 2019) as I am now exploring gouache as a new medium to me. Clouds are one of my favourite things to watch. Now I feel I can give it a go painting them!
I’ve never been especially good at painting/drawing however recently have been practicing painting and getting into it more. After watching countless videos I have decided gouache is the medium I’m most interested in using and I was wondering if you could do a video on ‘beginner’ paintings. So like, maybe a tutorial on something quite simple for someone with little painting skills but something I could be proud of as my first try at gouache! Love your videos so much and can’t wait to get into it.
This was excellent! It was helpful that you mentioned challenges and how you tackled them. Sometimes students to realize we all have challenges when painting and the learning happens when we persevere :)
As always, I got to learn a lot from your studies and I appreciate you sharing your struggles through this process. Getting the color right is also one of my challenges. A couple of subjects I am very interested in are: a. Rocks, and b. Sunlight coming through a forest. I'm always fascinated whenever I see a forest with lights coming through the woods but don't know where to start. Thank you.
-Thank you Jess, I find clouds and water hard to paint, not only in gouache but watercolour, you have helped will try your technique. Watched your water exercises too.
Have you ever heard about oxgall liquid by the dropper full to your water for smooth consistency and adding W&N Dispersion liquid to keep pallatte and papermoist without buckling paper. I use both and feel it's a secret no one knows!
WHYYY did i get the notification so late?:( i love clouds so much and im so so happy you keep going with the studies, i have exams right now bu when its all done i will get to it, im so exited to do it. Beautiful as always Jess, take care💖
Other artists are always talking about bringing their clouds to life and how adding this or that color made the cloud more alive and now i'm just sitting here like "do they know clouds are not alive? like...are any of them aware of that? or maybe clouds are alive and I'm the only fool who doesn't know? i thought they were just condensation hanging in the sky? why do we need to give them life? they just need a decent shape..." this is why i dont have friends. i dont even understand other artists and we do the same job

How i blend properly if my paint HAS dried on a different layer? Do i just go over with more paint? Or try with white paint? Or use a damp brush? I am extremely new to painting overall and guoache is rhe first medium i was recommended , but im having a hard time with the blending of different layers. Anyone got any tips?
It's very clear especially when you are doing clouds....that gouache has poor blending and layering quality...either it dries too quickly to blend or difficult to layer as it smudges easily with beneath. Same subject when done in oils...it's so fluffy and seamless.
darkest values to light... thats a great tip jess!🤞
I think it’s one of the best tips I got so far.
Thanks for not excluding your errors, makes it so much more relatable and takes off the pressure of making it 'perfectly' in one go
It looks so simple the way you do it but looking at the reference made me realize "How the heck did you know what colors to mix to get that hue?"
It comes with practice :)
she has a video on color theory too. it could help you mix colors

I will keep this in mind, thank you! :)
This is so good. It’s making me think of the way I drew clouds so far. Your system creates a super depth. Amazing well done

I think when they say “Alive” I wanna thing they mean alive
Alive here means in a more realistic way
What colors did you happen to mix for the more orange cloud (3rd painting) … is it just orange, burnt under, and white?
Nvm…. I just noticed this is a year old and you probably don’t remember! 😂 🤦🏼♀️ my bad!
Can u do ...sweets...like cupcakes and cakes.painting studies..🥞🍰💓it would be good...
did you put a bit water to the paint????
i still have no clue of how to blend smoothly ;(
Roots and tree structures could be interesting. They're good to study organic 3d shapes.

About how much time do you spend on each painting?
around 30 mins for each, the first one took a little longer
How do you keep the Miya paint from drying out?
She sprays them with water every once in a while
yep that's right i just spray them once a week when i remember to, and spray them lots when i'm painting with them
I’m struggling painting cloud 😭
Pls do sceneries next
