- I haven't made a video about Blender's new features since 3.0 was released, but 3.3 looks too good to ignore. Here's five of my favourite new features in Blender.

quick tip: when you face another "auto smooth" issue and you find yourself going deeper into the menus to do a very repetitive but "single click" task, you can create a shortcut for that and assign it to quick favorites.
Yeah, that's what I did. I did the same for showing face normals (blue and red) cuz im paranoid my jank modeling turned something inside out lol
Yeah, that's what I did. I did the same for showing face normals (blue and red) cuz im paranoid my jank modeling turned something inside out lol
It is still surprising how many people are making tutorials or Blender focused video, while not knowing the very basics ...
You can also alt click the checkbox to apply it to all objects you have selected, so if you have thousands of objects you just have to click once.
I didn't notice the Sweet Baby Ray's Barbecue Sauce until you pointed it out.
I didn't noticed it either, unfortunately.
My case gets so hot during rendering I could almost use it as a bbq.
Great stuff! I hope they give EEVEE an upgrade with a proper shadow catcher, shadows from HDRI lighting and SSGI by default.
They're working on a total refactor of EEVEE similar to the cyclesX project. It's called EEVEE NEXT. Hopefully it'll end up getting those features.
İt's probably left for Blender 4 at this point
@Juso3D I mean, it'll high likely shift again until it's ready.
See new hair system for example
EEVEE doesn't get enough love that it deserves. It's so good for any non-photorealistic projects
@Juso3D I can't see any difference in the 3.4 alpha builds...and isn't it strange that in the 3.3 page, the section of Eevee is omitted?
Halfway through editing I noticed the stray bottle of Baby Ray's on the desk 🤣
😂😂😂 oh man 😂😂
*Me with a desk covered in junk:* What a faux pas.
It’s an essential part of any workstation
Sweet baby Ray's? That's my jam!
@@darkfoxfurre you're not seeing the McDonald's wrapper and two coffee cups just off camera.
I didn’t even notice the bbq sauce until you pointed it out now I can’t stop looking at it
Good work as ever, the Blender Dev's may get distracted every now and again, but boy are they pushing things to the limit and with 5 versions of blender on the go at any one time now they are doing an amazing job. so grateful to you and the Blender community and organisation for getting the best out of everyone
Blender 3.3 is coming with Barbecue sauce?
Sweet Baby Ray’s, those are some nice features!
Can't wait to try this new version out! All I need now is sculpt layers similar to Mudbox's and more robust UV tools.
Great video. Love how Blender is growing so fast. One small tip: could be a good idea to use one of the images (like the tracking) inside the thumbnail for it to appear more interesting. :)
I'm looking forward to playing around with these new features. Thanks for showcasing them.
OMG, the Auto Smooth feature is really great... I feel with you here, that's awesome. Why it took so long? Just a wild speculation: if you are just box modeling, maybe the flat shading at first is better to see the geometry... and also if you are modeling a lot on an object, those two steps won't make much difference. And if you have a lot of objects which you want to change, select them all, right-click "Shade Smooth" smoothes them all at once and Alt-clicking enables Auto Smooth for all selected objects. So maybe nobody saw a big need for this feature? But as I said, I agree with you on this one.
yea i was glad to see that addition and have been using it
Turning on “Cavity” (AO) shading in the Workbench renderer is also helpful for clarifying the geometry.
@@lawrencedoliveiro9104 Yeah, but my comment wasn't about giving tips for modeling in Blender, it was speculating about reasons on his more rhetoric question "why did it take so long to get this feature?"
Flat shading is the opposite of that: it makes the geometry harder to see, not easier.
@@lawrencedoliveiro9104 This is a pointless discussion. As I said, this was no comment on how to improve the workflow, but trying to make up reasons why the developers didn't add that feature earlier. My comment was never meant to seriously explain anything - so I could have also said something stupid like UV spheres are there to help make cubes look more rectangular.
So exciting! Thanks for the quality content
THANK YOU!!! TNice tutorials is such an amazing tutorial. I just got soft soft today and was playing around on it but had no clue how to really use it.
I couldn’t keep my eyes off the bbq sauce
That last feature is an absolute time-saver and life improvement indeed! Thanks for sharing this. 🙌
I have another suggestion for Blender dev's : enabling the Node Wrangler add-on by default.
when will we see follicle maps generated at curve distribution on mesh? it should be possible to get a surface map for when each hair particle contacts the mesh. the uncanny valley of most hair systems usually comes down to improper hair/skin deformations
Sweet Baby Ray's - Its the law
Hair curves hair curves hair curves!
I will never ignore BBQ sauce! (also thank you for the update)
My work around for auto smooth is to put it to your quick menu along with the shade smooth so that its next to each other in quick menu
thanx for review
Saw Sweet Baby Ray's in the background and immediately subscribed.
Zuck called. He wants his Sweet Baby Ray's back!
Thanks 👍
Good work
ITS REALLY WORKED LOL THANK YOU DUDE
Excellent
Thanks for the update, but now all I want is to try Baby Ray’s. That’s some sneaky product placement on your part 😉
My current workaround for blender autosmooth is making a quick favorite of the auto normal option. Its still 2,3 clicks, but I barely have to move my mouse
I always use the quick favorites to en- or disable auto-smooth, so anyone who doesnt want to work with experimental builds can use this for now
that was so use full! !
It's amazing how happy I am going to be about Auto Smooth :)
I reckon it's already saved me a few thousand mouse clicks.
Grease pencil is my bread and butter. So happy
Shade auto-smooth is just the tip of the "little" features iceberg. So many things like this could be done, but don't, because these aren't sexy features to work on and therefore developers don't wanna do them. It's one of the drawbacks to open-source software and could easily be the biggest reason why commercial software still exists.
If the Blender team were to track down and do something about all these little things, they'd be unbeatable and (IMO) Autodesk would lose 90% of their user base.
Do you have any examples of other little features that they should add?
@@alex-qn5xp Simple stuff that many professional programs have. I've used Maya since 2008 and Max before that. I haven't touched Blender in over a year so they might have added some of the stuff I am about to mention, so forgive me it they have. None of what I mention should need to be a part of some addon I find online too.
1. Dockable/floating workspaces. Blender is horrible for multi-monitor setups. My setup is the viewport on one monitor and all the menus on the other (layers, channels, tools, properties, etc). And no, stretching the program across monitors isn't the same.
2. Speed! Blender's viewport is slow. Once you are used to the speed of Maya it is really hard to go to anything else
3. Pie menu editor and pie menus closer to how Maya's marking menus work. Check out Maya's marking menus. They are pie menus on steroids. All my tools, and any menu I don't need on my second monitor, can be opened with a hotkey. z + click opens a quick menu with all the tools I use plus options. Shift + z + click opens up all the menus I use from texturing, materials, to rendering. ctrl + shift + z + click opens up all miscellaneous menus, tools and custom workspaces. Maya already has a default marking menu with shift + click but creating your own is vastly superior. Those menus, along with spacebar being the default super marking menu, my hands barely have to leave the bottom left corner of my keyboard. Thank god I can already customize shortcuts and bring the move, rotate, and scale keys to where they are in every other program out there.
4. Component selection through the right click menu. You can change the right click menu to have the option to cycle between verts, edges, faces, and all... but you lose the other options of the object context menu. All they need to do is add those to the top, or bottom, of the right click/object context menu.
5. The major modeling feature I cannot believe they left out... the ability to add an edge exactly where I click. I absolutely hate having to lay down an edge and then drag it from the center of a face closer to a parallel edge. There is an addon out there, but again, I shouldn't have to search for that. My subdivision modeling time goes up having to do that to every edge which needs a support instead of just laying down an edge and then immediately going to the next edge.
Don't get me wrong. I'm quite impressed with what they have brought to the table in the past few years. Even some of the professional addons like meshmachine and hardops are lifesavers for hardsurface modeling, especially texture work. However, just as the OP mentioned, the devs want to add a bunch of sexy features without getting all the basics down. These five simple features alone would probably make me switch. There's a reason why Max, Maya, Houdini and a few others are the major players. It isn't only due to the companies behind them having some crappy practices or them being entrenched into the field. They are truly solid programs. Maya itself was created to be completely customizable for any workflow with input from Disney. Open source devs sometimes seem like they don't look at other software, or they do, and then figure they could change what already works to make it better.
@@Trevor_Bennett An interesting read, thank you.
@@alex-qn5xp You're welcome.
before the big 2.8 changes, they started this "UI paper cuts" sub-site where people would discuss such things, with captures, mock-ups for suggestions and developer feedback. I tried to search for it, but it seems like it just devolved into a small "task" on their issue tracker.
DeCoded has uploaded, STOP everything and watch!!!!!
The sauce is the boss
It really is!
I just added autosmooth as a shortcut (control-q) this week and thought I was so smart after finding and checking that box thousands of times over the years 😂
Awesome
He had when he "pitched down the Nice tutorialgh hats at the end of the phrase. "
Mr. Dr. Prof. Patrick appreciate it man
Great - love it...
I can feel you bro
Great video, thanks. Out of those features, I care only for the last one. :P
Feckin love this software, the modeling tools are awesome. Never going back to AD now xD
Blender is the only software in the entire world that gets more optimized with time instead of less.
That Shade Smooth + Auto Normal is very welcome change.
Maybe this could be taken a bit further: a global configuration which would give the user to ability to toggle the Smooth Shading and Auto normals including the angle value from configuration when creating new mesh objects would be super sweet.
I can't take my eyes off that sauce.
nice sharing.
They should just make the "Shade Smooth + Auto Smooth" on as a default. You could turn it off if you just didn't want it like that.
hope on day in the next decades we have new non destructive edit modifiers for vertex moddeling and curves, spline...maybe with realisation of g nodes.miss these 3dmax tool like edit poly or set list etc.
Man I just cooked BBQ chicken and now you made me hungry again. For a second I thought you were gonna reveal that the _default behavior_ of Blender while creating a mesh was to shade smooth and turn on the normal tick box without having to do it every freakin time. Of COURSE NOT. Blender has *sadistic* default settings for everything from leaf bones to what you've mentioned. If you think I'm gonna migrate from 3.2 to 3.3 with my 70 addons, you be crazy bro! Blender trying to be like Houdini shouldn't mean making everything opaque and torturous... and I have an adv degree in Applied Mathematics and Statistics... I'm no derp, honest.
I like your videos though, you actually add information I didn't know... ty for that. I use Blender to make my Art Therapy while I watch the world end. 120 days or so to Winter... then we all can starve and freeze while we all enjoy the dark at sundown until sunrise. Can't wait, it's almost over. Make the Middle Ages great again.
The last one never really bothered me since u can hold alt to turn on auto smooth for all selected objects. Still it's better this way.
sweet baby rays! 😃
Nice a new hair system :)
I am going bald ;)
for the autosmooth you just had to click all ur objects that you want to auto smooth , and hold alt :)
Thanks for the summary.
As an aside, do you stroke your beard to one side while you work on stuff? I used to do that and my beard looked like that.
"Shade Auto Smooth" by far the biggest of these 5 for me Lol!
Blender: !!!New hair system super new ultrafeature!!!!
Zbrush: welcome to fibermesh
respect
Lol, that auto shading thing used to bug me too until i put the option in quick menu, super fast
I hope they also add a way to easily mimic the control scheme of Maya (I say as someone who is just starting out in Blender. I'm using it to sculpt models made in Maya...I can only control the camera with my drawing tablet because google doesn't know how to change the camera movement hotkeys). At the very least, they could bring in Maya's functionality to change the camera's rotation center (you know, what happens when you press "F" in Maya while clicked on a viewport)
Use the industry keymap and then spend about two days setting up keyboard and mouse shortcuts plus try to find as many addons as possible which will mimic functions found in Maya. I still use Maya primarily but with some time, roughly two days, I was able to get blender to act fairly close to how Maya acts. It's still nowhere near as fast or responsive, but it is making my transition a bit easier.
Everyone: Blender huh? Can you mix something with that? Like Soup in the Kitchen?
Community: Shade Auto Smoooooooth YAAAAAAY Pog
🔥🔥🔥👍🏻
Wow, auto smooth button is the real game changer. No sarcasm.
You could always put it into Quick Favorites... it is completely the same.
whats the background song you used?
it's nice
About auto smooth: you can just alt+click the "auto smooth checker" after selecting which objects you want to apply auto smooth on... About 3 clicks for unlimited aumonts of objects...
I personally don't want the button because reasons (probably no one would care read) but I went to test this before making a reply and noticed why the UI button isn't just doing that. Apparently it also does the Shade Smooth operator, because if you just enable the Auto Smooth on a Flat Shaded object, it will still be Flat Shaded, so what it does is [Shade Smooth] > [Auto Smooth] and specifically in that order, because [Shade Smooth] disables [Auto Smooth].
So, like if you add a cylinder like he does then enable Auto Smooth, it'll still be flat.
How is the roadmap for the character animation tool feature rewamp? Since they had the position open I have heard zero about it’s progress
Last feature you are mentioned is huge. It's like ''one more thing'' by Apple
You could always put it into Quick Favorites... it is completely the same.
And now I will just think about some sweet baby's bbq sauce during days !
Shade auto smooth - thank Christ!
Does the new hair system allow for easier exporting? Can you export it as a mesh easily?
i just want it to crash less... thats my #1 requested feature
Weird, blender almost never crashes when i use it. Maybe its because of your hardware?
A feature i would like if you clicked on that certain object you can instantly go towards instead of always zooming in or just finding where it is.
Numpad period key. It works for everything in blender. Objects, nodes, and the outliner.
My Radeon 7 is no longer a paper weight…yay
Couldn't ignore the sauce... Now i modeled one. I hate product placement ^^
Wish they could work on simplifying the baking.
The last feature should be enabled by default!
I get it
We need a rework for the particle System 😭😭😭 like the particle of 3ds max
Hey guys. What is the best way to upgrade to newer versions? Is it possible to save settings and plugins so that everything works in the new version at once. Or maybe there is already a button that will allow you to upgrade without reinstalling Blender?
Have you tried the blender cloud add on? Surprisingly it's not included, but you just have to download the zip from the official website and create an account. Some things work, some others don't but it's really a time saver.
You can use the portable versions of blender. These run straight out of the folder and dont need installing. This way you can just download the new version, import the old settings and delete the old folder.
yo must be nice
I fear the new Hair tools will be rather complicated. How about children, deflect emitter, kink, roughness, clumping, hair shape and so on. I feel like using geo nodes will be less straight forward and more time consuming to setup. Unless the devs prepare some node group presets but even than it's more complicated (especially for newcomer).
All i want would be a spherical brush falloff in regular particle edit mode.
Thanks for the showcase Rob you awesome dude you!
Pre-sets should be added at some point. That's the direction that the whole of Blender is going, geo-nodes with pre-made settings. They've even talked about replacing the whole modifier system with geometry nodes eventually.
Cannot ignore the Sauce
I will _not_ ignore your BBQ sauce.
Why there is no feature like "Smoothing groups in 3dsmax" in blender? Or am I missing something?
What they need to do now is to use the new autosmooth by default on all curved shape types! But no, we will wait for the next 15 years for that one
what's Blender like for type 4 hair?
Also what is the sauce called on your tablet?
Did Sweet Baby Ray's sponsor this video? 😂😂
Shading is nice, but I would rather have primitive adjustable until you say. The inability to increase res, dim, or rad is so frustrating. There is an add-on, but I want it default.
when is the official release of 3.3?
we need new features
calling it rn im the next aries.
trance. Dude made a month worth of s before actually realizing what a plug-in is.
05:41 totally hahahahaha
"Please Ignore Sweet Baby Ray's..." Too Late.
Im so offended that they replaced the Nirvana graffiti with Foo Fighters .... it's like replacing Coke with Diet Fresca.
"inconvenient' would describe your previous comnt better then
