  • I have purchased lots of new gear for my upcoming trip to Nepal and I discuss most of it in this video. I purchased a Fuji XT-3 with 18-55mm kit lens, 10-24mm f4 lens and 55-200mm lens. I bought an Insta 360 One X with Invisible stick, an Anker Power Bank, Sandisk memory cards and an Osprey Exos 38 backpack. This is a very gear heavy video.

Regarding the image quality issue : definitely deactivate the OIS ! Common issue unfortunately, and obviously not the buyer's fault.

Thanks for this. I always disable IS when shooting. The issues occured mostly around the edges. If IS was the issue, it would have been soft across the board. It was definitely the combination of 55mm f4. I have been using the camera aggressively for the past 3 weeks and I have much more to say about it (all good, of course). Peace.

I have a Fuji 18-55 and it’s pretty good (not as good as 10-24 or 55-200 but no too far off) .... I have heard there is quite a bit of copy variation ..... maybe you got a poor copy

    • @youknowwho9247
      @youknowwho9247 4 года назад +5

@@grantnewton5705 Is more likely that different people have different standards. If you've never shot with anything higher quality - sure, the kit lens is good enough. But for someone who's used to full frame with pro level glass and downgrading to Fuji for weight reasons, the kit glass won't do.

Landscope 360 I get that, but the image he showed is nothing like the images I have got from the lens .... I just watched a RUclips video from Christoper Frost .... of the 270 odd lenses he reviewed, he included the Fuji 18-55 in the 10 lenses that wowed him .... I have seen so many forum posts on people frustrated with bad copies that I suspect it maybe a poor copy .... it may be OIS related ..... but there are firmware updates for the lenses .... never had updated firmware for a lens before I bought a Fuji - 1 or 2 of the lenses had an update I think

    • @youknowwho9247
      @youknowwho9247 4 года назад +1

@@grantnewton5705 That's a possibility for the particularly bad result, I guess. I'm just saying that even a top copy would probably lag behind the standards of someone who's used to shooting full frame with pro grade glass. Not that that's a fair comparison anyway.

Have you considered looking at any of the Olympus systems? Very low weight and size. Not to mention amazing weather sealing and IBIS. The IBIS would probably help a lot with your walking video shots. Not to mention the new EM5-MKiii has the flippy outty screen. The image resolution might not be quite good enough for your main shots, but as a second camera I bet it would work great.

It's a little late for that. But his camera and lenses weigh 1769 grams. An em5 III camera with 9-18mm, 14-42mm, and 40-150mm lenses weighs just 872 grams. I hiked the Pacific Crest Trail last summer and I decided against bringing my camera gear with me and opted instead for an LG V30 smartphone using FilmicPro to shoot with. It was OK, but next time if I can afford it, I'll bring a Sony RX100 VII! Very small and 302 grams.

(UPDATED) Happy that you enjoying your fuji xt3 :) iv been using one since Jan and got a 2nd xt3, i can give you some tips and advice for some of its disadvantage to help get the best from your xt3.
    1. Not turning on - Firmware issue was fixed with the recent firmware update.
    2. About the kit lens at 55mm f4 - i haven't seen much of issues you mentioned i shoot portrait. it could be your copy? Pls check if the lens firmware is updated
    3. For the work you do (landscape photography) use primes are the best and small- 16 mm 2.8, 23mm f2, 35mm f2, i personally have the 35 f2 and 55 f2 amazing lens
    4. Video af you can play around and test. i mostly use AREA AF (under video settings) > with either C or S, and when shooting people i use Face on/ Eye auto works fine. never missed focus, (i use fuji to film weddings) I have one of the Fns to set as Face On Eye auto. When i need it its on if not its off. when its off im on AREA so i can select and move my focus point around to what i want in focus. The other setting > TRACKING SENSITIVITY i set to 2/3 and speed to -2/-3
    5. Set Pre-Af to on under AfMf settings when taking images its faster. For Af use S - single point or zone AF AF-C not the best for all situations
    6. Battery saving > Disable touch screen and disable touch af if your not using it, Disable Bluetooth (its ON by default), Sensor cleaning set to off both when switching on and off, under screen settings EVF brightness set it to manual and to 0, After all this set Boost mode on under performance (this will make the camera noticeably faster) i always leave on :)
    7. Get Anker PowerPort PD 2 - 1). You can directly charge your fuji bats with it when inside the cam. 2. it will charge your powerbank faster, 3. you can use it to supply endless power to your xt3 ;)
    8. When using lenses like the 18-55 > under shooting settings set IS MODE to shooting only.
Please try this and hope it helps :)

On the flip out screen issue, some videographers have picked up Atomos Ninja V's (hot shoe mounted), which also is an additional storage device for your video work. At least its something to consider if you can manage the 360 grams for a Ninja V + media (1tb AtomX SSDmini 90 grams) + battery weight (353 grams).
Edit: Also for power in remote locations, you can get a small solar charger or solar power bank.

Great Video :) Some thoughts on the negatives as an X-T3 user which also has seen dozens of X-T3 videos:
    - Camera not switching on: I don't know which firmware version you were on, but the X-T3 did in fact have a lockup issue when it launched and one of their firmware updates fixed it and people haven't been experiencing any lockups ever since, as far as I know. So that issue might be gone, depending on which version you were on before updating. I’ve seen a couple of people on RUclips taking this camera to cold temperatures for long times and they didn‘t have any issue. So you should be good.
    - Autofocus: First of all, the autofocus is configurable and you may be better of with a setting less aggressive, so that it doesn’t instantly try to refocus when is slightly looses your eyes. Also, since you mentioned the firmware update, one of their firmware updates improved autofocus quite a bit. Maybe you've already used the camera after updating and are experiencing the same autofocus performance, but it's just a thought :) Also, a firmware update planned for January (version 3.20) will improve some of the autofocus aspects yet again, which might help with your issues as well. But, as you said, Canon has impressive video autofocus so I'm sure the X-T3 won't be as good as it with firmware updates only. But they really stepped up their game and catched up within 1-2 years only, so the future looks good.
    - Finally, sharpness worm artifacts in Lightroom. This one is simple: Lightroom sucks and can‘t handle RAF files. Capture One one the other hand beautifully renders the RAW files with great detail and is capable of sharpening them without an issue at all. I‘m not saying you should switch from Lightroom, but it‘s just something to be aware of. Adobe is by far not the leader for creative software anymore, I‘ve ditched them completely actually.
    - Kit lens image quality at 55mm: this one was surprising to me since all I heard was praise for that lens and I personally have great results as well, although I mostly use it for video and rely on the amazing prime lenses for photography. Maybe OIS was on or something, image quality definitely looked worse than it should.
Changing from one brand to a completely different one, AND from full frame to APS-C is obviously a huge change. I hope you'll have a decent experience, get used to the camera as quickly as possible, have great fun with it and take amazing photographs. Good luck!

I shot with this 18-55 mm lense fore about a year now, and never had any issues with it. Yes, if you shot wide open at f4.0 on 55mm corners are not as sharp as the center, but that's a common problem with a lot of zoom lenses. Before switching to fuji, I shot on Canon, and used 24-105L II, and fuji 18-55 as sharp, maybe even sharper (depending on the conditions) than canon in my experience

It does take a bit of patience to learn a new interface, so I can understand how that puts some people off particularly if they have been using LR for years. But it's worth it in the end. Note : I'm not saying LR is bad at everything ; it does have some redeeming features but it's far from the powerhouse app that some would have you believe. Like I said, there are plenty out there who refuse to give alternative apps a chance ; they are simply stuck in their ways and in a state of denial.

Tom, I’ve been shooting Fuji gear for several years. You either have a bad copy of the 18-55 and/or have the I.S. Switched on . Check the lens switch. Mine is quite sharp across the 18-55 range. The lens has a reputation for being above grade quality wise. Try another. I use all 3 of the lenses you purchased, along with the 16-55 f2.8, 50-140 f2.8 and several primes. For weight savings, the 3 you have is a great way to go without compromise.

Great practical review - re: the X-T3 "forgetting" the 2-second timer, that has bothered me for the past 3+ years (X-T2 -> X-T3) - one would think it should be so simple. As noted by others, at least the X-T3 has the remote shutter port on the right, but it is a bother sometimes to have to use that.
re: aspect ratio - for sure this is a bother too - I would also love to see more options to : 3:4, 4:5 for example.
re: 18-55 image quality you MUST have a bad copy, I have had one for 3+ years and not noticed anything like that - I actually tried the 16-55 thinking I might get better quality, it was slightly better - but not that noticeable for practical purposes.

Thomas lose the 18-55 and get the 16-80 using this latest lens at the same focal length as the kit’ lens you wont suffer with the softness at 18 or 55 of the kit lens also it is weather sealed like the camera plus the extra width of 16mm and the greater reach at 80 which when stopped down at each end are very sharp. Just my experience of using both. I used to sell Fuji and Nikon kit in my shop so tested many samples of the kit lens and brilliant as it is, the 55mm end is soft wide open. The 16-80 balances on the X-T3 beautifully and the little extra weight is inconsequential.

Hi Tom, great review, I always think your gear reviews are excellent. One suggestion (as someone who shot w/ the X-T3 for the past year) -- if you're editing in LR, use "Enhance Details" -- this makes a big difference in the fine details, especially for scenes with foliage. After this, I add some low-detail sharpening and things look great.

I tend to shoot Street and travel at f/5.6 and it's very good. Maybe it was a focus issue rather than lens sharpness? Did you switch from AF to MF or something like that?

The autofocus is highly configurable. The base configuration is too aggressive in re-acquiring focus when eyes "go missing" (like when you looked down in that video sample). You can change it to be more "relaxed" there and stop hunting.
The image made by the kit lens at 55mm is so bad it looks like it had some shake in there. Maybe OIS was ON? Or a faulty sample? I don't think it's a stellar lens by any means, but I've never seen such a bad image out of mine. o.O

**** Attention! Long story!**** Hi, I was in the same situation some months ago, when I got rid of all of my FF Nikon gear due to size & wight. I also a hard core hiker & landscape photographer and naturally size & weight is very critical for me as well. So I ended up buying an XT 2 with some fine fuji lenses. I also loved the controls and how the whole package looks. But soon nightmare came: I was not able to do anything good with Fuji's raf files... I am used to using lightroom, but I was not able to use it anymore because lightroom handles fuji raf files terribly!... I tried some alternatives like Irrident xtransformer which convert fuji raf file to adobe DNG, I also tried luminar and Capture one,but none of them was made me satisfied with the results ("the best" result was with the Capture one). So if you are using lightroom, you had better start thinking some other alternatives.... Those wormi artifacts drove me crazy! :D Furthermore: Dinamic range which I was used to, was not even close to FF sensors! You will see! Battery life also dissapointing: you have to bring 2- or more additional batteries. This is additional weight to your package... The next anoying thing: camera handling. I know that the XT3 has bigger grip, but for me XT2 was a freaking nightmare to handle. I was always feel that the camare would slip out of my hands. I purchased also an L bracket, with grip extended grip, but it was not fully satisfied for me. Simple did not work for me. And,if you summaries the whole additional things: more battery, additional L bracket, worse IQ & staff like that the benefit of the "smaller" body & system is getting sounds not so good,if you see what I mean... Furthermore: there are only few thrid party lens makers for fuji system,so you have to chose between what fuji gives to you,and those lenses are (the best ones) quite expensive) So I decided to go back to my beloved Nikon FF camera. I do not mind carriing heavy stuffs anymore! I would rather suffer more during the hike, but happy with the results later at home, than facing complete shit after some good photo shoot. Fuji might be a good camera for others, I must admit, but not for me. My name is Robert Pantya from pantyarobert.com Best regards for you all, Robert

@@videoplayerchannel Hi,Simon, thanks for your reply! Honestly what made me choose Fuji APSC system was due to the size of the FF lenses. Not the FF camera body is the issue in this story you know, rather the bulky FF lenses. Manufacturers can reduce the size of the body, but can not the size of the lenses. That is why I went from Nikon to Fuji. But as I wrote above, there was a huge step back in terms of IQ! I felt as if my pictures and as me,myself a landscape photographer was getting worse using this Fuji system. Yeah, maybe Sony would have been a better choice, but you know there is so much hype around sony... (and it might sounds ridiculous) and I did not want to step into the line,if you see what I mean. Re: your 2 sec shutter release. One of the features of the X-T3 that I like is that the designers have moved the remote release connection to the right side of the camera (adjacent to the exp. comp. dial) so there is no interference by the 'L' bracket (unlike the Fujifilm X-H1 where the remote release connector is on the left side). Buy an inexpensive ( and very light weight) remote release cord that has a 2.5 mm sub-mini connector. I actually prefer to control the timing of the shutter release (eg. the brief moment of stillness between wind gusts) rather than depending on the self timer.

You might have to watch it on a bigger TV (I’m using 50”inch Samsung 4K). Anyone notice it? It’s this strange roll yaw pitch image stabilization wabble. I get this problem all the time! It drives me NUTS. It makes the footage totally unacceptable! For a bit more cash, I wish I had gone with the Sony a7iii in retrospect for multiple reasons. If you are looking for a system and you’re into film making with carrying as little as possible, you want to get away with hand held shots, IBIS all the way!! The XT3 w/ Optical Image Stabilization is unacceptable for hand-held video, I really thought with OIS I could squeeze by not having IBIS. ROOKIE Mistake! Love to know the full loaded weight of the hiking setup, sans water (varies per hike due to availability on the trail, where you would take a filter if streams exist). It seems to me that if you are willing to compromise on lens quality you should just be using one (or two) of the tiny (but high end) Sony cameras that are the size of a pack of cigarettes.
Everything changes with every trail and hike, because of water and difficulty. In high mountains thin air will be an issue. You better hit the gym. Previous vid a subscriber mentioned using local bearers, a great idea especially for well off clients, you'd drag in customers saying "No need to carry your own packs!" The natural restriction of the difficulty of getting heavy gear to great spots is also an advantage, if you can get the good gear there, you win.

    My dear Thomas,
I wish you would have listened to my recommendation if you truly want to carry lightweight equipment The Olympus E-M1 mk2 with an M.Zuiko 12-100mm f4 attached would've been all you need for your trips, believe me!
The system would give you a small, lightweight and full weatherproof reliability (moist, dust, freezeproof, etc.) Now, that lens alone covers a 24-200mm at a constant f4 from your previous system (Full Frame) Not only that, it's also part of Olympus Top Graded lenses. It is a Stabilized Lens which can be combined with the In-Body IS and give you a stunning 6.5 stop of stabilization, giving you the opportunity to leave your tripod at home, no joke. It also gives you close to macro capabilities and the best of all is, that it is cheap.
You want something cheaper, lighter and with more reach? Try the m.Zuiko 12-200mm f3.5-6.3. Sure, it's not stabilized and it's slower but it has double the reach, it's smaller and covers all the other features from the 12-100. Imagine having a weatherproof lens that fits on the palm of your hand that reaches a 24-400mm on a full-frame.
I think you missed a great opportunity, my friend. Pity.

Hey Thomas, I kinda have the feeling that you're a tad bit unhappy with that xt3.. Did you end up trying the Nikon Z6? It has been an outstanding hybrid camera for me. You get the quick switch between video and photo with a tactile button, and on top of that, you have 3 user preset mods (once you set them up) for each video and photo (also a tactile knob rotation). That way you can very quickly go from 24 to 120 frames. I also feel like its almost the same size as your xt3 since you put the extended grip on and L bracket. Plus I shoot at f4 on the kit lens all the time and am blown away with how good the kit lens is. And the icing on the cake is that its FF, I can easily shoot Astro with the f4 after a long day of hiking.

@@corpocore honestly it looks like the camera wobbled slightly or there was a smudge on the rear glass element etc

Interesting and helpful video 👍🏻 concerning camera bag: I am using a Camslinger Outdoor. It has its own belt but you can wear it under your Rucksack! When you put it down your camera is still in position. I love this pouch so much, it’s worth looking at it!
