Solo Wild Camping in Greece on a Mountain - Feb 2020 4K HD

  • 49 days before nationwide lockdown in the UK, when no one expected the virus we saw warning posters of around airports and hospitals to reach full blown global pandemic status, I set off on a 4-day wild camping trip to Thessaloniki, Greece, alone.
Straight after my shift ended at the bar I used to work at before the pandemic furloughed and eventually made their staff redundant, my mum picked me up and took me to Manchester Airport to catch my early morning flight (my mum's a star like that).
I arrived in the early hours of the morning, started walking from the airport to the nearest village at the base of Mount Chortiatis, called Thermi.
There, I bought some freshly made Baklava before setting off on my hike.
After hiking through beautiful terrain, I found my first wild camping spot, secluded with a stunning view of Mount Olympus across the way. I sat and ate my Baklava with that view, as the sun set, reflecting golden orange on the Aegean Sea. It didn't get better than that.
I slept well, and the next morning I set off to hike further up the mountain.
I reached an abandoned village now nature reserve, and decided to do some urban exploring in one of the larger abandoned houses. I couldn't find too much information on the abandonment of this place, so if anyone knows why it was left to ruin, I'd love to know.
I couldn't go much further to the top as it was restricted as an army base, so I descended a little before finding my next wild camping spot, in some woodlands overlooking Triadi Lake.
Again, I was lucky to catch a colourful sunset, casting pink & purple hues across the sky as the glowing orange orb pulled them down into darkness. The moon shone bright that night over the lake.
I woke slightly chilly, a surprise as the previous two days had been fairly hot. It was raining slightly, and as I packed away, I noticed it had been snowing on the mountain I had descended the day before!
Due to this, I decided to hike down back into Thermi, and as I reached the small village of Triadi, a car pulled over, two local women offered me a lift. I think they felt sorry for me hiking in the rain with a huge bag (though I didn't mind it!).
I thanked them as I got into the car, aware of stranger danger, but the fact they were two women made me feel at ease (still never have your guard down, though). They even rang their English speaking friend to translate!
They dropped me off at Thermi where I found refuge sitting outside a cafe under shelter and a heater which felt very welcome to my cold skin.
I ate two salad pots, the freshness & nutrition I craved after eating nothing but nut/protein bars & baklava for the past two days. I also had a beer.
I then hiked back towards the woods at the base of the mountain I entered on my first day, having done a full loop. I decided to pitch my tent under a shelter, to give me extra protection from the overnight rain, and to not be too far from the village due to my early flight back in the morning. Still, it was well hidden by trees, and I pitched after dark for extra stealth.
That night I received an Instagram message from someone who seemed to be local. I declined his invitation for company (honestly, the worst message a solo female hiker can receive) and luckily didn't hear back from him.
What did freak me out, were the army trucks that drove up the mountain along the nearby road shortly after. I reasoned with myself that it's fine, I was just a bit jumpy and nervous.
In the morning, I caught a taxi to the airport (cheaper than the ones over here!).
As I waited for my flight at the airport, I sat and ate veggie burger & fries as I was surrounded by COVID posters, again, before the full effects of the then mystery virus really hit. It's weird to think about even now.
The flight back was a real treat, I'd never seen such amazing cloud & mountainous views before in my life.
All in all, an inspiring trip. My first, and to date, only ever wild camping trip outside of the UK.

Also, my brother & I hiked Hadrian’s Wall to raise money for Mind, we got 55 miles in before we were forced to cut it short due to food poisoning from an Inn we stayed in! We're better now, and will continue the walk this year so if you’d like to donate and support us I’ll add the link below! It’d mean so much, and for a good cause!

It was so incredible, I’ve got to say either the first night as I watched the sun set over the sea & Mount Olympus eating baklava, or seeing those clouds on the flight back!

I’m going to Greece in august and I’m only allowed one day for a hike alone then I’m stuck on parental duties 😂. I’d love to go coddiwombling in a new environment. Happy hiking 🥾

Very nice! Were you following an established route, or making your own way? It seems like you didn't come across a single other living person while you were out in the wilds.

    The before times!
Lovely cinematography Jen 👌interesting to see ...so arid ...and those skies from the plane back were just beautiful
Why the dereliction and was that military infrastructure ? Was that near the border ? Urbex grrrl ?
Love the dogs, the ones guarding the properties were mostly Mountain dog crosses, one of my favourite looks. Soo many lovely crossbreeds.

Aw thank you, and oh my gosh the flight back was just so magical. As was the whole hike of course.
I have no idea why there were so many ruins and abandoned buildings! This was on Mount Chortiatis, and there’s a military base on top, not sure if that has anything to do with it. But I’d love to know more about the history of the mountain and why all that’s up there!
I love those dogs, they’re my favourite crosses too 😁
