Wow, I know this video is kinda old and the channel looks abandoned, but I have to say that the way he explains is beyond excellent. I find amazing how he can condense so much useful information in an 11 minute video. Thanks so much fo this introduction.
The bit about formant mapping at the end is really cool, I have been thinking about trying to do some vector art based upon the vocal qualities of different languages but I had no idea how, so this video has provided an almost euphoric jumping-off point!
@@satez416 I'm not expert, but here's what I'd say. Tone, pitch, and intonation are all pretty similar. Acoustically, I think (I don't know for certain, though) they're the same. Tone is phonemic (think of Mandarin Chinese tones). Intonation is phrasal. And pitch includes both of these. Pitch is also an aspect of other things like stress/accent (think of pitch accents in Japanese or Swedish). Just see the overall pitch over a phrase instead of a single word to see the intonation, I suppose.
@@keegster7167 Thank you so much . I really appreciate your detailed response. I just discovered this tool and i was wondering how do you use this tool to compare intonation. If the pitch in the graph is up, does that mean the sentence has raising intonation. Currently learning Swedish , so i was wondering if i could use this tool to visualize the intonation pattern in a sentence. Thanks much !
Im using Praat and it works fine with words. I'm trying to open a vowel sound and I keep getting this message: Ignored 96 null bytes in text file. Does anyone know how to fix that?
Hello, we have a question: what program did you use to plot the F1 and F2 ? It would be really helpful, because we tried excel, but the axis are on the wrong side. Thanks !
Why are spectrograms so inexact? The right graph at 01:00 should be just one narrow horizontal line, since it's just one frequency - 200 Hz. For some reason though it's a very thick line which indicates more frequencies involved, which we know there aren't! Why?
Thank you so much for this tutorial. Could you please do another tutorial on the various useful graphs using praat and explaining concepts of frequency formants
Beyond doubts, this is a great tutorial to compare F1 and F2. In this video, you mentioned a reference (hellenbranded at al 1995) at 09:40 , i tried my best to find this reference but badly failed. I am comparing vowels of two different languages and i need this reference/ resource please.
i think you struggle to understand simple things , i would bet you dont have more than a handful of people you can call friends . more bluntly you would understand something as simple as what Hydrogen and Sine waves have in common .
Come on, if you want to deal with acoustic phonetics you must learn English because there's really good in English and some works are just in english. I'm Brazilian and I needed to learn it to advance my searches.
Kinda Stupid to rag on grammar on youtube especially an apostrophe , because in the Scripps National spelling bee (2007 or 2008) an apostrophe was put in the word "scrumptious" the judges said nothing about it ... things are not 100% in the Grammar world Kid .. especially on you tube ..

You are doing God's work, man. Thank you!
Thank you so much - the explanation of finding F1, etc, was extremely helpful!
This stuff is pretty cool, like vocal fingerprints
Yeah, it's really awesome. I'd love to use this for comparing intonations of languages. And I can't believe Praat is free!
@@keegster7167 How do you analyze intonation in this . Is the Pitch nothing but intonation ?

@@satez416 Yes, if pitch changes over a phrase, then that's intonation
thank you. Truly! I needed to understand this topic for my NLP project.
Thank you for such a clear explanation, that's brilliant!
way much better than my lecturer, cheers
This was so helpful for my Bioacoustics exam. Thank you!
Very good resource! My students loved it.
Thanks for explaining in such a simple way
I wish all the tutorials was like this! thank you!
It's an excelllent channel, bro. You have a bew suscriber. Greetings from Mexico.
It's a good intro of Spectrogram and very useful. Thanks
u just saved my degree thank u
Hi there. I'm just wondering what you used to plot the F1 and F2 graph? It'd be great to be able to do this! Thanks.
I thought it was f3, im pretty much sure ur not using mc
I love his voice. 👍🏻👍🏻

It might be a bit late, but he said 'Praat' in the video
I hope my prof could check ur video out ....great job

Very well 👏👏
But I'd like a little more info on how to plot a graph from praat
Thank you
Is it possible to export data from Praat? this is needed to calculate the standard deviation in IBM SPSS Statistics.
Thank you this was great and very helpful!!

(hillenbrand et al 1995) may well be the reference you were looking for.
How to compare two voice frequencies similarity in python?
You are amazing dude!
thank you sincerely
great job
Excelent video !
thank you. Very cool!
this is very helpful! thanks
ngl this video just saved my whole degree lol.
Thanks. I got to know the keyboard shortcut for formant frequencies!
it's literally F1 and F2 on the keyboard
This software has one of the best choices of keyboard shortcuts I have ever seen! =)
annoying how the icon's on the bottom are blurred
EXCELLENT! Thank you
Thank you
Thank you very much.
Nice. Thank you.
Wonderfull tutorial :)
