A HUGE thanks to our buddy Alex for helping making this project happen!! What should we do next with our remote control UTV?! 🔥❄
Add your GoPro to the front and rear and see if you can plow the whole road from inside your apartment
Did Alex document anything on making the control system?
Printer Plastic sprockets with roller chain seems a bad idea. Probably would work fine with a timing belt since the belt isn't going to gouge into the plastic like a metal chain will.
I would be fine if you broken up your projects across multiple videos, as I know its takes a lot of work to do these projects. Getting it all done for one video has to be pretty stressful. I would guess your doing 80 hour weeks on these videos.
definitely curious to see how the printed sprockets will hold up over time, specially as it ages....
🤔I'm guessing you printed it in standard PLA... which gets brittle over time (as it absorbs moisture from the air).
👉I'd recommend making an FPV camera mount system that transmits live video to you so you can do true remote piloting from the comfort of your bed ... it would be awesome if you use a 360° camera (or one pointed down) on a post mounted on the roof so you can have a bird's eye view of your RUTV & have clear view of what's around it.
⚠I'd also recommend having Alex modify the code or configure the system so that the default position for the brake actuator is fully extended/brake pedal depressed... this way, when you let go of the kill switch or lose connection to its control box (when you're too far away), the RUTV will automatically step on the brakes & stops itself from moving.
🥳awesome to see these creative projects again... looking forward to what you crazy kids come up with next!
Need some cameras to see where you are going. Forward & reverse. Perhaps Part 2?
Next step for the Remote is to add forward and rear remote cameras, so you can see where you are going.
Cameras for sure FPV... make cameras from front to back when changing from forward to reverse.
This is the way. Sit warm inside while you plow!
and use a VR headset
They have remote controls with video displays built into them (more the drone / airplane style remotes as opposed to the car ones)
Just use a drone from above
Next ? I'm thinking Arduino computer w/GPS. Teach it to follow the road/driveway and turn around to come back. A camera to see where it's going would be nice as well.
Basically a giant snow Roomba. I like it!
And expand on that to use tree tags as reference points with a few teslas bumper sensors if cloud cover and GPS are not conducive.
Yup. And map out the driveway with something like ArcGis and integrate GPS/Arduino to control the servos.
Or tracking with the drone,Courtney is a good machine operator.Well done guys !!!
My thoughts exactly. I know there are programs like ArduPilot out there that can also be used for boats. Would probably work for a land vehicle as well. The tricky party is safety - what if your neighbor is coming down the road again? You'd need some kind of sensor to avoid collisions. Maybe lidar, or an IR range finder. It might also require a few beacons around the property to get enough precision. It would make a good collab with one of the RC boat/plane channels.
That kill switch definitely has to engage the breaks as soon as it’s let go
Seconded. When Deadman is not engaged the brakes should always be fully engaged.
That way if the controller is dropped, it forces the UTV to immediately stop.
Also, to be extra safe, when Deadman isn't engaged, it should also (at least) automatically put the UTV into neutral, or better yet, park (if there is a Park) and disable power to the UTV cart motors.
That's what I thought, too.
My gas rc helicopters have engine kill switches that shut the engine down if it flies out of range. Something like that could be a good idea also. Along with a receiver with failsafe settings if theirs does not have them.
Love to see Riley doing his engineering role again!
This has become one of my favorite snow plow oriented channels.
More like let's build a crazy complicated way to plow that is significantly less efficiently than using the skidstear. I'm here for it.
right?!
That is the coolest thing ever - way to go !
I forget the RUclips channel, but there are guys that put a piece of ABS pipe over the cutting edge of their plows for plowing gravel driveways.
It seems to work well to leave the gravel on the driveway and not scape it off.
Yes, that's very common for snow plows to do that. Only problem is the plastic is fragile, especially when it's very cold outside. I've heard of commercial plow drivers using a steel pipe instead but that has its own set of issues too. Gravel is a PIA to plow snow until ground is really nice & frozen so you're not pushing all the rocks around. 🤷🏻♂️🤔😅
This is so sweet! Also, its so amazing what can be accomplished with a 3D printer, some metal & a welder nowadays! These 3D printers have literally become a game-changer in fabrication capabilities. Cool project man!
Agree with many of the commenters. Make it autonomous. Whatever method is best but so it acts like one of those electric lawnmowers or a roomba vacuum. Then it could just go out and plow the road all on its own. Cameras, so you can always monitor from your spot inside. Commend Riley on his skills as a fabricator. Good job on the video work Courtney . Enjoy what a sport you are and that you're always laughing and smiling while supporting Rileys crazy and risky adventures. You bring the proper balance with your caution and reasoning.
Riley, you are an amazing individual! You act like a crazy person and then you turn around and show us how much of a Genius you really are. It is a pleasure to watch both you and Courtney. working together to build your new home in Idaho. Every week I look forward to seeing what new and crazy idea that you have come up with and then do. My best wishes to you and your family.
Since the UTV is already electric you should consider just tapping into the throttle signal and fwd/reverse toggle for the electric motor controller. It's not like there's a throttle linkage or gear shift :) You may be able to also use regen braking. Most of these small Chinese EVs use very similar motor drivers.
Or put a solar charger on the top to extend the range and recharge while parked
@@gregorybarth930 I would work on eliminating failure points first. While it made for a cool build video, converting from an electrical signal (from the rc receiver) to a servo actuator, to a mechanical linkage, to the control interface of the utv to another electrical signal into the motor controller. That's a lot of potential points of failure that could be bypassed
Yes. It's going to be out in adverse weather and plastic is fragile when it gets cold. As cool as this Heath Robinson set up is, direct signal management is the best way forward.
Oliver is so stinking cute! Growing up way too fast! Is there anything that you two can’t do? The imagination and the abilities to create those ideas are simply incredible! Love you guys like part of my family!
1 strong recommendation : adjustment of the Kil switch! .
Releasing the Kil switch on the remote control should mean : Full Brake pedal (as in parking brake).
also outside signal range should mean : KIL-Signal ON = Full Brake pedal.
This way the UTV can never roll away from you.
RC car components are available for this.
These must receive a constant signal from the hand-held transmitter if it is lost,
Furthermore, it is a super cool RC UTV Top 👍👍
the brake is automatically activated and the petrol engine shuts down (Kil switch).
How to shovel the snow in 10 years while you are inside, warm and drinking coffee...... Oliver, go shovel the snow. :)
That’s how my dad did it when I grew up in Idaho. When I went to college he then purchased a snowblower because “his old snowblower went to college.”
And get a remote starter for the car.
Oliver is got all the tools and kits to get the job done.. nice one.
George Jetson has left the Grid.
Oliver will want to drive it, not RC it.
When I lived in Detroit I use to have lunch once a week with 3 auto engineers. They told me once the strongest part on every car was the brake pedal. They also told me the engineers lament, “anything worth doing is worth way overdoing.” Make that brake pedal strong.
You need a 2nd (or 3rd) channel: Homestead stuff, Riley makes toys, and Courtney is gonna need an alibi.
Love you guys!
Ambition Strikes has officially become the American Colin Furze channel, and I'm here for it! Great video, and great creation! Next step is to mount a camera in the front, that you can watch with VR goggles or a drone controller. Then you don't have to have line of sight, to plow the entire driveway.
Imagine what kinds of things Oliver will be building in a few years
That's scary
You could also imagine what kind of things Oliver might be breaking in a few years with an RC plow :)
@@MarcLeeOnly if Riley doesn't break it first
Oliver is gonna break some hearts one day with his Beautiful Eyes!!!
His smile and facial expressions are so enchanting.
Hi there Riley and Courtney, I think I have just finished binge watching all of your previous videos! All I can say is WOW WOW WOW. You guys work so hard and have done such amazing things to your beautiful property in just 2 years, I'm so impressed with what you've achieved. The dogs are lovely and baby Oliver is super gorgeous and definitely has an amazing life ahead of him, but you two, hands down are the most supportive, encouraging, appreciative and genuine couple I've had the pleasure to follow. You make the best team and are so so funny together. I love watching and following this awesome adventure you are on together 🎉🫶🏽🙌🏼🤗
you need to produce one for others to purchase from you for Snow blowers for people in extreme areas that have to stay inside. You have become an inventor of a product that can ultimately save someone's life. Please consider building this as a kit.
NO CAMERA GEAR WAS HARMED IN THIS VIDEO. Super fun to watch!
What a great idea - remote controlled plow. You get to stay inside and watch your creation at work.
🎉🎉🎉 Just when I think that you have invented the best idea you move on and create an amazing project again. I’m happy for you kids. Blessings,Carlos ✝️🙏❤️😊🇺🇸
Radio control modelling will not be the same again. Riley great job again.
Riley, love your fabrication.
YOU GUYS ROCK!
lol that grind hard plumbing company quote(I think)😂😂😂 This can go places you can’t even walk😅
HEY!! I caught Riley *manually* adjusting the plow. Come on!! The plow functions *have* to be remote!! 😂
Too much fun? Nah. Just the right amount of
Such a fun project! Great video!
I think I would have spring loaded the brake pedal to the full brake position and had the actuator pull up to release the brakes, so the default position (even when the power is off) is full brake application.
As far as what to do next... Finish adding the servo for the winch in and out, also add another linear actuator to angle the plow.
FPV (first person view) from a drone would be great, bonus points to get the view to switch to a backup camera view when you switch it into reverse (will help you not back into buildings).
Two items - add FPV capabilities to the UTV and put in a rainwater collection system (you have plenty of rainwater and roof area). Love your tenacity.
Amazing. Back in the '70's I rigged my remote control Army tank to be able to open and close my bedroom door. This is simply awesome. You guys are such a great team!!
I love the smiling baby content, you have no idea what a positive vibe he added to my day, incredible! He's looking more and more like Riley but has Courtney's eyes.
Wow! The cinematography is becoming very polished. Great story line and the baby pictures were precious. You two make a great team. The engineering and fabrications are superb; sharing the process left me feeling like i am a part of the family. Ya'll are setting the standard for RUclips. Could you make a flying-drone that followed just above the plow-drone, so flying-drone could relay a control signal back to the house, so you could control the the plow without going out?
When the UTV is driving towards you... Face your body and controller 3/4 away from the UTV - face other direction. Now look over your shoulder and drive it. This tricks your mind in to giving the right steering inputs.
This is the best channel on YT! Now, add a GPS so it will be completely independent!
you should have it always brake when you let go of the controls, and have a hand grip trigger so that when you let go of controller it auto brakes
Best video recently. Great editing. Awesome stuff!!
Thank you so much!
@@AmbitionStrikeshey I have a question
Oh this is where you can get REALLY wreckless!!! That 3D printer is awesome! What model is it? Brilliant project! You were like Christmas morning when you rolled the quad outside for the first time!
WOW my nominee for Toy Of The YEAR!
You have outdone yourself on this one, bud.
Thst thing is awesome!
Y'all have to set up an Oculus type of viewing for the plow 😊... and extend the range to control everything 😀
Oculus? I think it’s time they do a review of the Apple Vision Pro like every other RUclips channel?
@@Zharesss Oculus was the first thing to pop in my head 😆 I'm not a tech guy 😔
I knew that you guys were crazy but I didn't know that you were this crazy. One of the best projects you have have ever done. You now have to add some cameras so that you can remote control from the comfort of your home.
Fantastic project! I love the lights in Riley's 'Design Cave'. 🤓
That's super cool! I'd be a bit worried about the plastic parts wearing out over time, especially the chain sprockets or break actuator that if they fail could cause you to loose control of the UTV. Also the fact that you have to have the green button pressed to actuate the breaks seems dangerous, maybe Alex can fix that?
I agree. You always want no-input or no-signal to mean Hit the Breaks.
Riley gets the best toys.. What you MUST do is have the brake fully on by default and held off by a servo inline with the actuator so if you loose signal it returns to default braked position !
Please make sure you have your buddy program in a “Fail Safe” mode if the RX ever lost connection to the TX, the RC won’t just drive off.
I suddenly want to change my answer to the last Patreon poll, lol. UTV may have just taken over my favorite plow device you guys have. That looks fun! That being said I'd likely be a child and try and take it places it shouldn't go and destroy something 😅
Oh, Riley is definitely going to get into trouble with this thing! 😳
I think we need to have an Ambition Strikes-Grind Hard Plumbing Co crossover series.
I don't think there to far apart. I believe there is the same state
I’m pretty sure they’re in the same area even! I think they’re on opposite sides of the lake near Sandpoint!
Places you can't even walk!
Right? I think we need to have a 100mile challenge between the utv and the Chang-li!
What a fun new tool!! You and Alex are amazing, Riley!!
big props to Alex for his fantastic job in electronics manufacturing
Liked this video a lot! May be wrong but i see a lot of leverage on the tab where you welded all the servos. Will you add some bracing to the tab and a tensioner between the sprocket and the steering wheel?
Next step is the remote control army truck! 😁😁
If the remote goes out of range what happens? It brakes or it drives into the horizon?
First Again! What a cool idea!
Thanks for being one of our early access members!
A full sized remote control side by side!!
Of course.
29:30, “places you can’t even walk” ?! GHPC colab?
Amazing project btw! Literally childhood daydreams right here! 👌
Awesome project. Here's an idea for a project. A long range wireless 360 camera on the UTV connected to a VR headset.
Like people said in other comments, I think you should make the kill switch default to a fully pushed in brake, so pushing the kill switch button releases the brake and releasing the button pushes in the brake. I assume that any loss of connection to the remote would activate the kill switch as well.
A truly fail safe setup would needs a brake system more similar to a semi trailer, where loss of signal or power (in the case of a semi, air pressure) would fully activate the brakes. That way if the brake servo fails in any way, the brakes would activate. I don't see an easy way to do that without severely modifying the brake system though.
If this UTV has any kind of regen, turning it on would help slow it down a little without the brakes.
Probably not a ton of steering input. I think plastic will be fine. Can always print another.
after it is hauled up the cliff ... ha, ha
FPV camera and goggles ?
Wow!
Don’t know what to say.
Brilliant idea and build.
“Impressive” is completely inadequate a word to describe this project.
I salute you Sir!
🫡
Love this project and video. Have followed you guys for years and this is one of your all-time best.
I'm not sure why, aside from the fun of creation, you'd want to remote control snow plowing. I find it so satisfying from inside the cab! Next thing you'll be wanting a remote control chainsaw!
This might be a little more software oriented than you intended: Add a control computer for the UTV to automatically plow an area! Then amend that a few times for it to do _all_ the roads and driveways! Do you have a remote control for killing the whole thing? That seems a prudent course of experimenting with semi-FSD UTV plowing!
I can always tell how good parents are by their children and Oliver is happy as can be so you guys are fantastic parents.
Sci-fi project! All that's missing are anti-collision sensors and a few cameras and it can be considered perfect. I have no more words to express my admiration.👍👌
You’ve got one heck of a skill set! And so does your sweet wife holding the baby and steadily filming, as well as helping with your project. Now just figure out how the stones were cut and
moved in Egypt.
You guys are genius’. It was too funny when Riley said maybe I can control it from being in it, totally negates the whole project! 😂😂
Needs a camera. I love your content. I can’t wait to see what you come up with next. Keeps it interesting. Don’t listen to the the negative comments. This is your job and they are just jealous that they don’t have a fun job that they can make money at. It’s your way of life and theirs is different so they can’t handle it. Love you guys and Oliver is so cute. ❤
i think this guy is making a diffrent planet for his family . love from india
Oliver is just adorable I know boys aren't supposed to be adorable but he is😂❤
You are such a big kid! And I have never been so jealous of a RUclipsr in my life!
This was super fun to watch and I can't believe how quickly you made it happen! Great work! I think next you've goooot to teach it the road and make it autonomous. Leaving at 7am? No probs. Send it out at 6:30 and you're all clear!
This is like the coolest project ever...
Is there anything you cant make Riley????? Theres no words... Im amazed...Love your videos...stay safe you all and see you on the next one.
This has to be the coolest thing I have seen in a long while. Here's hoping this goes viral!!! Great Job, you two!!
"Oh, Riley!" sums it up in one statement! 😂
I had such a giggle watching you guys sounding like excited 7-year old's testing out their first BMX bicycles 🙂. What fun it was to watch! Thank you
That is so cool..... Now you need cameras and a virtual reality display. Ultimate setup would be small static front an rear camera view in the corners of the VR display and a articulated camera for the main view so you could look around some as you drove. Add some 2 way audio, then drive it to town for a "curbside pickup" of something.
Riley is a master fabricator…wow
This was educational and hilarious too! Riley, the mad inventor and his cautious wife! I laughed and cringed and then clapped when it all worked out, more or less! And little Oliver's smile and even a little chuckle were the best! Great job guys!
I should know by now that I shouldn't be surprised by what you guys come up with next. Deb and I were giggling the entire video. What I absolutely love about you guys is how you think outside the box. There seem to be no limits to what you can accomplish. If you were ever to change the name of your channel, it should be to "No limits." We absolutely love you guys! Thank you for making our life richer.
Another great video showcasing your mechanical and technology skills. Much respect.
Riley is having too much fun……awesome
I understand brake & steering need to be mechanically driven. Presumably an electrical / electronic interface would also work for the “gas pedal” and forward/neutral/reverse switch & a kill switch.
I love the way you hack the mechanical design and turn a concept into reality.
So, a couple of things to think about;
1. Adding A; 360° cameras or
B; using a drone with the "Tag-a-long" option as it hovers above the
"R/C"UTV.
I think option A is best as you won't have to worry about a separate vehicle.
2. Adding a remote tilt to the plow.
3. Adding a remote on/off switch so you don't have to leave the comfort of your living room... hehe.
On a separate item;
when are you guys going to build a proper vehicle lift system, instead of relying on floor Jack's to raise your projects off the floor?
Love Everything Y'all have accomplished.
Keep having Fun
and Enjoy Life.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I truly love watching your channel, not only are you very informative but, like this video, have some pretty fun stories going on. 😁
This is the kind of project I don’t understand the why of, but thanks to your video I understand the how 🤷♀️
I have no idea if it is strong enough. I just wish I could have had that technology when I was younger. So cool. Thanks.
I just noticed you finally completed the shop door. Looking good.
All I can say is; I'll never be bored tuning in to your blog.....My favorite , THANKS
You need to do an FPV mod, and signal boosters. Then it can be a remote operated drone plow.
Yes, I agree, cameras is next step. Then add speaker and microphone, so you can drive to end of your driveway and escort visitors to your house and such.
To truly be able to plow from inside, those front and back cameras are a must. Great project tho! I love to see Riley so passionate about his latest project. I am unable to comprehend his genius thinking to fabricate all those moving parts etc and be successful mostly on his 1st try! As always, looking forward to your next adventure 😊
The 3-D printed sprockets are impressive. Did not think they would hold up...
RC blade, GPS Steering for entire driveway and house landing area. VR oculus/drone type set up even. Watch it all sitting on your couch while it plows.
Riley.... beyond awesome- I have a full time job, raise livestock, build and improve the property, etc. You make me feel like I have an IQ of 42 when I watch you:)
You two are unbelievable. Oliver is cute as could be.
First of all: The kill switch should ONLY control the throttle servo, so you still have steering and brakes if you let go. Second, add forward and rear cameras with the rear view flipped so you can drive it from your house using a VR headgear. Third, add a really good GPS module so you can write a program that learns your route and can play that back to automate they whole thing. You need the GPS since just driving it by remembering the controls would not take slippage into account. This would essentially be a giant Roomba for your property.
Amazing fab work. My inner child would not be able to contain themselves with this. definitely would get into some mischief
Incredible build, we can not wait for more builds. BTW, Oliver is sssssoooooooooo cute!
The best thing about this channel is that on 40+ celsius days here, we get to watch you guys in the freezing cold 💙💙💙
