      Frederick Douglass knew where his roots were. I am sure that the black men in Grant’s army did, too. That’s why he always took their side. Years ago, I watched a movie starring Mohammed Ali about the end of Reconstruction in the South. There were scenes of his character meeting with President Grant. It was revealing to me that Ali’s Character knew where Grant's heart lay but that the country wouldn’t follow him any more. Grant remained the most popular man in America for the next ten years, was awarded the greatest funeral in American history, attended by Southern generals. But it was after that that the “Lost Cause” historians began to attack his reputation as a general and as a president, though not as a man because his Autobiography tells us WHAT a man he was. It infuriates me that ignorant mobsters would join in this vilification.

      ANTIFA is a revolutionary communist organization that has existed since the 1930s. BLM leaders have said of themsleves: "we are trained Marxists". They are not focusing on police brutality. They are focusing on tearing down statues. That is a cultural revolution. This is a classic minor communist uprising attempt. What you should really be asking yourself is: why is the DNC and the left-wing media in radical support of all of this? China. A lot of money is in relationships with the Chinese Communist Party. It really is simple.

      Yup. Speaking as a white guy, it's a deeply unpleasant experience to have to think about yourself in racial terms, something I'm finding I'm doing more and more these days. It must be miserable for black Americans to experience life like this, and I cant imagine why activists would desire to spread misery around, instead of eliminate it. John, I really hope you finish your book quickly. I’m a white male married to a mixed race (black/Hebrew) woman. I grew up in the 80s detesting racism, pollution, and big corporations, so I could hardly be accused of being right wing. My wife and I used to be able to talk about anything, but with recent events that has stopped.
    I grew up in a poor, high crime neighborhood. I suffered physical, and verbal abuse from both parents. Because I had no money for college (and because nobody in my family had been to college) I went straight from high school into a brutal manual labor job for 6 years that permanently damaged my back before I turned 30. My mother died of cancer when I was 23. I have been mistreated by police on multiple occasions up to and including having a gun pointed at me despite the fact that I’ve never once committed any crime, done drugs of any kind, or owned a firearm. And I chose to make a woman of color my wife, and the mother of my child.
    Despite all that, after reading White Fragility, my wife informed me that all white people are racists, and that my white fragility prevents me from acknowledging how I have benefited from her oppression. She the community college professor with a masters degree who earns more than I do. I didn’t even argue with her while she yelled at me one night for an hour straight without taking a breath about how horrible racism is, and how everyone we know is racist, and how all systems we are under are founded on racism.
    She really is not that person overall. She has endured her own unfair encounters with police and other acts that any reasonable or objective person would have to recognize as racist. And I know that seeing images of what was done to George Floyd is traumatic for someone as compassionate as she is. So now is not the time for me to have a nuanced discussion with her based on statistics trying to prove that complicated problems I care about are just blindly being blamed on racism which is only part of the issue. However, our relationship is being damaged by this, and I can’t continue to do nothing.
    I know she respects the hell out of John Hamilton McWhorter the fifth from listening to Lexicon Valley. I’m hoping by the time your book comes out that emotion will not be running as high, and that it can be a starting point for a conversation. Until then my silence is proof that I’m complicit in oppressing her with my whiteness.

      Yes thats precisely where I think the guttural feeling of rejection to this type of book comes from. Akin to Freud and the Oedipus complex....many people simply don't identify or find it to be "true enough" for them to buy into it. So it becomes a bit of self-selection.
      Rather than having the intellectual honesty or courage to simply state something that is true for "me", and my own struggles to overcome racial bias, it is written as if everyone must feel that way...because I do. Its shared guilt, its lack of personal accountability, and its weak.

      I listened to an interview with DiAngelo on KQED public radio here in the Bay Area a couple of weeks ago where a listener called in during the Q&A segment saying she embraced DiAngelo's ideas and was an activist for social justice, but as the mother of two (white) sons attending a diverse school where they were the minority, she wasn't sure how to continue teaching them about white supremacy since they hated being white and wished they weren't white. She'd been telling them they were nice and it wasn't their fault they benefited from a system of institutional racism, but they were still struggling with their privilege. DiAngelo said she gets nervous when she hears stories like these because white people resistant to the idea of antiracism will latch onto them and say she wants whites to feel bad about themselves which isn't true. She maintains guilt and shame aren't effective means to elicit change. Instead she counselled the woman to help her sons use the reality of their privilege in ways that will contribute to antiracism and make them feel proud about themselves, the implicit message of course being the only way a white oppressor can feel proud of who they are is being vigilant about antiracism. DiAngelo also suggested using white antiracist role models but then added we don't have a lot of these people to look up to. I'm not sure she's read much history on the subject.

    Love the conversation. Throughout our recent history, I've struggled with the question--cannot we come to a reckoning for our past and still be patriots? In fact, isn't it because we LOVE our country that we must constantly question our values and continue to be the shining example to the rest of the world of what govt for the people REALLY means for centuries. We can admit that we are not perfect, but still the greatest country in the world. And we can do our very best to move forward together.

    Statues, what statues should be taken down? Here is my guideline... if the statue was erected because of the person's immoral actions or political position, then that statue should be taken down. So, Robert E. Lee's statue is taken down because the statue is there because Lee fought for a political view supporting the institution of slavery. George Washington's statue remains because the statue is erected to honor his contributions as a Founding Father. If Lee had been a Confederate general but in later life discovered penicillin, for example, and a statue of Lee was erected for that contribution, then the statue should remain.

    • @WhtetstoneFlunky
      @WhtetstoneFlunky 4 года назад +2

      I think your guidelines are pretty much my guidelines. I can see that there is still a gray area. A statue of Columbus might be an example.

    • @macedindu829
      @macedindu829 4 года назад +1

      Lee fought for his state. He wasn't personally for the cause of his state's secession, but he could not abandon his state, regardless of his disagreement. It was a matter of principle. Lincoln had wanted to make him commander of his army, but Lee somewhat regretfully refused. People today think of the US as a country, but it was conceived as a union of states. From his perspective, outsiders were transgressing on his people with deadly force.

    • @benjaminharrisongray9079
      @benjaminharrisongray9079 4 года назад

    And I bet he’s right, I’m unfortunately one of the people too stupid to distinguish the validity of his work versus those that seek to create politicized narratives from economics but I can rely on Glenn’s honesty and integrity to reinforce what little I do understand.
