The site of the grey built old style train station was built in the last year of two. When I was young in the 80s, this area used to be a market, specifically where there were several zu1 ngiuk5 dong4 (pork butchers) and places to buy vegetables. The fish market was at the site where a big highrise is currently at the end of Sin1 Liu2 Gai1, just before the ma1 tiu2 or pier. It was awfully smelly there back in the 1980s. And yes, very busy before 1997. As mentioned there were several restaurants, at one time along this road. There were also cafes too where you can get hot milk tea and cold fizzy drink and food like a fried sweet sandwich with sugar and condensed milk filling.
The glimpse of the Chinese side of Zung1 Yin1 Gai1 Street is quiet. At one time it was full of tourists from the mainland, and they used the area to buy goods sold in HK that weren't available in China. The early 80s fashion trend was to acquire jeans if I remember correctly. Hakka people from the British side go to buy things that are restricted in HK. I recall being very scared accompanying my mother in to the shops there to buy firecrackers for Chinese New Year. Especially mo4 zai3 pau4 which are huge rolls of firecrackers. The crossing used to be rather lax and Hakka women in dark clothing and their black headcloth outfits were never stopped and searched so we had so many fircrackers to play with!!
