In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to music from Sly and the Family Stone. Specifically, I'm listening to two of their most known hits. I've heard these songs over the years, but I had never spent much time looking into who Sly was and learning about the circumstances around which these songs were created, recorded, and released...and how they were received at the time. The music is timeless, and I invite you to come along for a fun ride!

"Thank You" was the first soul tune I heard - the Black kids in my junior high school locker room were singing it. When I heard it on the radio, my head exploded - it was a thousand times more soulful than anything I heard, my first exposure to The Funk, all of it. I still get goosebumps when it first first up. Massive props to Larry Graham for adding the bottom, and Greg Errico, the drummer, for just sitting in the pocket the entire four minutes or whatever. No frills, no rolls - just the funkiest metronome of all time.
I was a teenager when these songs were released. They got heavy airplay on New York's WABC🎸. But it was their appearance at Woodstock that really sent their fame into the stratosphere. Their performance was so strong there, people became fans overnight.🎸☮️
I was 15 when this band was popular and deep in to the hippie movement. These songs were true then and had a lot of meaning. Everyday People stood the test of time and is so relevant yet today. I wish more young people would take these songs to heart.
Their GREATEST HITS was one of my earliest albums/LPs...love the cover art. Every song is a homerun. "Higher"... killer! " Sing A Simple Song"? Totally bad ass. "Hot Fun" brings back good memories of Summer vacation. When you're 11-12, it doesn't get much better.
Larry Graham is a bass playing beast. He formed Graham Central Station. This bass driven funk was the early beginnings of the disco sound. Genius!
Larry Graham, James Jamerson, Carol Kaye. Best bassists ever to pick up the bass.
We actually loved everyone '68
RIGHT ON, DOUG! Sly has challenges, but he's still around & he gets out & plays sporadically & brings the house down. "IIIIIII AM HELVERING-DAY PEOPLE!"👍🏼🤩
Douglas...to hear Sly and Company at their best you need to take in their Woodstock performances...Truly phenomenal! Ty brother
I was a child when they had all their hits. Their hits remind me of specific times and places .
That was a great reaction, got right into what both songs are about and did justice to the music. These are great artists that need to be listened to.
Saw Sly at Madison Square Garden in the mid-seventies. Them and Rare Earth.
Sly was having certain "powder" problems at the time. He had become erratic during shows. That night he and the band only performed for maybe 20 minutes. He made an announcement about someone in the audience with a shotgun was out to get him.
True story. Anyway Rare Earth came back on and blew the house away again.
All in all a great Rare Earth show.
Oh, to be a teenager in 1966, and hear these songs on the AM radio! During this period, I loved, loved, loved "Hot Fun In The Summertime" and, of course, "Dance to the Music." Later on, another groovin' one is "If You Want Me To Stay." Good one here, Doug!
One chord (sorta one bass note 2 chords; whateva). So caught up on the lyrics & infectious groove I never realized. The wind instruments seem to portamento between notes in Thank You. Amazing stuff! Tx!
They got a lot of mileage outta these 1-chord vamps...masterful!
I love it when you are into the music and simply growing to the beat. This is one of those!
So happy you got to do Sly, a true musical genius and innovator. There are several live performances of their songs on RUclips that really worth watching. I particularly like their "I want to Take You Higher" that they did on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1968. Sly and Rose go out into the audience during the performance. It is interesting to watch the audience reaction of that time (in their suits and ties), I don't think they ever experienced anything quite like that before. There is another one from the same show of them doing "Everyday People & Dance To The Music."
I love watching that Ed Sullivan video. The variety of expressions on people's faces is priceless. Some don't know what to make of it, some are really into it and having fun... It's interesting that Ed allowed them to sing 'I Want To Take You Higher'. Not long before he had banned the Doors from the show, when Morrison was told not to sing 'girl we couldn't get much higher' and he sang it anyway.
@@NoviJimB I had been thinking the exact same thing about the Doors and the Sullivan controversy when I made the post. I almost added it to my comment but didn't, so I am glad you brought it up. After Morrison defied and infuriated Ed and used the lyric "higher" anyway, apparently he was told they would never do Sullivan again. To which Morrison replied, "Hey, man. We just did the Sullivan show." Good choice by Jim, since the incident became famous and is now part of rock and roll history.
You should watch some live versions; they put on a pretty amazing show.
Thanks for this reaction, Doug! I was a kid listening to these on the radio and played by my older cousins but never paid attention to the lyrics or understood the deeper meaning. I appreciate your giving me fresh ears!
Same. My older, hipper cousins had the Greatest Hits LP. I just stared at the cover while spinning "I Want To Take You Higher". My mom hated it...anything with "higher" was taboo. Samething for "Light My Fire". :-)
@@jazzpunk I remember a family get together and my mom preparing my young sibs and I saying, "your cousin Robby has long hair, like a girl, but don't laugh at him or stare." Lol
Yessa! I’ve been waiting for this review! I’d love to see you do one on their AMAZING live version of I Want To Take You Higher.
The woodstock performance. Very cool. Thats my youth, and what was yet to come in music.
Saw them in concert back in 1970 at the Garden, NYC. Great, great concert. Was on my chair the entire set. I was maybe 10 rows from the stage. Smoking!!
This band is tremendous.
Thank You for your analysis ! Music came before (words) !
You are a chatty one. Although im enjoying your analysis AFTER the song has played. But, you are right about scathing not being the right word to describe anything about Sly Stone. His lyrics were always illuminating, always filled with insightful social commentary, but not scathing, or even judgemental. Just shining a light. Showing a better way. I love Sly Stone and Sly and The Family Stone. ❤❤❤
This has one of the most classic and sampled guitar riffs ever. Right the the middle of the song. As heard in Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation
Or the tape has been at slightly wrong speed....
He and his family ( extended family ) truly follow this song . They are old friends from the early 60's.
Sly is Sylvester Stone
Playing for Change did an outstanding version of this song. Check it out.
Loved both of these as a teen in the 60s/70s! Thanks for a great reaction choice and analysis, Doug! ✌💙✌
Cynthia Robinson is a great horn player!
I got the greatest hits album for my 17th birthday. Serious lyrics were w thing then.
Partly, the 'dying young' line also reflected the fact that a LOT of young black men were dying on the front lines in Vietnam at the time. "The Vietnam war is the white man sending the black man to make war on the yellow man to defend the land he stole from the red man." --Muhammad Ali, 1968
When I was a kid, we would spend the better part of our summer breaks from school at the NJ shore. Well we got tickets to see Sly and the Family Stone at the Wildwood Convention Center. The show was to start at 8PM and my parents were to pick my older sister, brother and myself up at midnight. At the time Sly was having some substance issues and they didn't hit the stage until after midnight! My parents came and picked us up and took us back to the shore home they rented and we never got to see them ... bummer night and it made my sister cry all night. Worst part was we couldn't get refunds for the tickets because we entered the hall and the stubs were ripped in half. I'm sure they were great cause they were played nonstop on AM radio that summer .... or not, but I do like their albums!
This came out during my junior high school years. I thought it was fantastic bass just everything about it the storyline I even shared your post to my junior high school in Arlington Virginia Kenmore junior high.
"Everyday People" is such an excellent track, I love to spin the vinyl 45 as much as possible, sometimes mixing it with Arrested Development's version.
You positively need to follow this song up with the next track on the album. Don't Call Me N****r, Whitey. Don't Call Me Whitey, N****r. This is repeated several times in a loud baritone. While underneath are the main lyrics condemning that attitude. A great message that got absolutely NO airtime. But it links up well with this songs message.
Funk is a long-overlooked genre.
Wow... I was 11 or 12 when this came out. The album was great! There were a lot of hits on that album and some are a bit more melodic than others. One of the mellower ones was, Everybody is a Star. One of the most rocking songs is, "I Want to Take You Higher".
Here we are with the early soul/funk merge that set the stage for the stuff I was speaking to in my other post today about the 70s-80 funk stuff. I hope all those guys pitched in to buy Sly a pony ;D
Yes it is a relatively new video but they knocked it out the park, usually when older songs get new videos, it kinda misses what the artist are trying to convey (example being the new joy division videos) but this video captures the meaning of the song.
"Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again" = Ya spell it like ya say it. 😄
11:44 I've never heard anybody mention their referencing their own catalog, but I noticed that early on. BTW, the last phrase in the verse, "You Can Make It If You Try" is another Family Stone tune.
I wonder if you have covered WAR in your show? They're famous for hitting a groove and staying on it till the cows come home.
Sly& The Family ...
The Sly tunes were great dance records whose texts made you think.
Check out the appearance of Sly (and the Family) on the Dick Cavett Show.
Up WID IT 🎉 DAMN SKIPP E
Thanks. Sly was such a game changer!!
The diversity of the group….nothing big now….because Sly made it nothing to get hung up about.
Concurrent with the progressive renaissance in Britain was Sly and his family doing exactly what was needed here in America. It didn't strike me as weird, when in high school, the two would find home in my collection. Busing and integration was a new and evolving thing, and music like this, as you said, and as they sang, broke down the walls that would separate us. In the '50 you had your Bloods and yer Crips, but in the 70s you had yer drinkers and yer tokers, and while yer tokers were always interracial, I can imagine that even some of the drinkers dug themselves some Sly. He transcended label, like Jimi, another whom everybody loved...as if to pay homage to those brave enough to shine their light at eleven.
Doug glad you Remember this band want to do me a favour could you do an "A" vs"B" comparison ( not on a show) but i'd like you to compare Sly's "Family Affair" then listen to "Money by "Jelleestone" its got SLY written all over it! this is a relative paying Hommage or SLY is involved somehow! 79 and living in a van but happy??
Larry Graham is thought to be the father of the slap bass style.
He definitely was. He started it and other bass players freaked.
Kicked it.
I like your shirt and under tee shirt on this review.
G: lean on me 🎶
Mr Doug I hope you’ve been well. It’s been awhile since we’ve heard some dream theater. I got 2 suggestions for ya. Blind faith and the dark eternal night. Cheers!
The one chord aspect was very common in funk.
When are you getting on the Ren Reaction Ramp? Start with 'Hi Ren'
then the Trilogy Tales starting with Jenny & Screech & finishing with Violets tale -watch all three together in the (full video)
you seriously need to check out the band Ghost. My dad and is a musician (has perfect pitch and knows music theory) and says that Ghost writes there music very well. They're personally my favorite band and have some fun theatrics. Super fun to listen to and watch. I definitely recommend Cirice, Square Hammer, Elizabeth, Year Zero or Kaisarion. They also recently had a song go viral on tiktok (Mary on a cross) so thats definitely a hit you should check out also! Apparently Metallica are big fans of them as well!
Check out the version of Thank You by the band Magazine: ruclips.net/video/hfTqrQ-FZOM/видео.html
Really?? OK I will!
Love me some Magazine. McGeoch is one of my favorite guitarists.
I saw Sly in 1971 in Wildwood NJ. He was 2hrs. late for the concert and when he did come on the stage all he wanted to do was talk. And he was so trashed he couldn't hardly stand up. I liked his music but I wouldn't walk across the street to see them after that.
Joan Jett released a respectable cover of this song. 🎸
I saw a recent documentary on Joan's carrier and was very impressed with her in every way- especially her integrity and determination. I'll look her take on Sly's song up.. Thanks!
Your observation on the dilemma about selling out in “Thank You” was very astute, especially since Sly got a lot of pressure from militant blacks to homogenize the racial makeup of the band. As we all know, he didn’t sell out.
🎉dancin wich u
Another reactor said black music was different before Family Stone and after they broke a huge wall.
Hi Doug. I want to recommend a video for you to react to. It's by Ren, and it's called Hi Ren. In just 2 months it's gotten over 6 million views, and tons of people are reacting to it. Also, Ren is very supportive of channels that react to his music, so if you get a copyright claim, if you contest it, I'm told it'll get removed. Really hope you check him out, cause Hi Ren is something that I think everyone should see.
Sly.
3 Dog Night had a black drummer.....
E minor babe'🎶
does Everyday People have only two chords?
A couple friends and I drove 100 miles to see Sly and the Family Stone in concert in Portland, Oregon. Phoebe Snow was the opening act and she was great. After her set we all waited. And waited. And waited and waited. Sly never came on. Was the band even there? Who knows? There were no refunds. Ever since that night I have hated this band.
At least you got to see Phoebe... Bummer re Sly's no-show. Loved poetry man and Inspired Insanity by Phoebe. Once went to Olympia in Paris during the 2000 and Sly took forever to appear. Hed apparently even forgotten some lyrics bit I was happy to see the group, albeit their late reunion version. The other musicians were definitely still at the top of their game.
Oh, please, let it go. Things happen, and it's only money.
IF ONLY THEY BOTHERED TO show - up within hours of scheduled performances...
What happened to metal/ maiden/ Metallica Mondays 🤷♂️
Coming back soon!
Please stop talking while a great song is on.
Thanks for the music.
Mostly ALL of Sly and Family songs have a message. Try Stand.
