  • Sabina Shoal, the latest flashpoint between the Philippines and China in the disputed South China Sea, is located about 75 nautical miles from the Philippines' west coast and 630 nautical miles from China. Gregory Poling, director of the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative at American think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies, tells CNA’s First the site does not hold strategic value, and instead has a “certain symbolic importance”.

@@Jerry-sf3vd Yes, if someone intentionally invades "YOUR" territorial water... but in the case of the West Philippines sea, the people doing the "intentionally" invading is China, and it is using the water cannons against citizens in their own waters. Is your argument that China using the "water cannons" on Philippine fisherman somehow makes China the invader, right? And if so, how did that happen? China's coast is over 800 miles away while the Philippine coast is less than 100-mile away. UN international law clearly states that China doesn't own the shoal but the shoal again by international law fall under the jurisdiction of the Philippines... so how can you explain that? These judges are not the legitimate judges from the International Court. You can hire lawyers but nobody is supposed to judges, which is illegal. You are wrong and are misinterpreting international law. Philippines should take care to avoid becoming a pawn in the geopolitical competition between global superpowers. I don’t think the many ASEAN members are happy about what the Philippines is doing right now. Many in ASEAN are optimistic about the shift towards a multipolar world order and ending Western-American hegemony.
It is both ironic & hypocritical of America to offer to “help” the Philippines assert sovereignty claims shaped by UNCLOS provisions when America herself continues to reject ratifying the UNCLOS treaty. Americans refuse to ratify UNCLOS because i) it will require the U.S. to share more oil and gas profits with other (developing) nations; ii) make America accountable to other nations adversely affected by its marine activities and iii) encumber future seabed mining ventures with less favourable terms. China ratified UNCLOS back then perhaps out of idealism to side with developing countries. China might be regretting that decision now.
UNCLOS provisions were not meant to settle competing claims of sovereignty of land. UNCLOS provisions about EEZ assume all claims of sovereignty have been settled. That is why the 2016 UNCLOS arbitration tribunal did not rule on the ownership of the islands or delimit any maritime boundaries. Any claim that UNCLOS or the 2016 arbitration tribunal decision asserts or establishes Filipino sovereignty is misinformation.
Both China and Taiwan did not recognize the 2016;arbitration tribunal and its ruling. None of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council have ever accepted any international court's ruling when it infringed their sovereignty or national security interests; the UK & US ignored the UN and ICJ rulings on Mauritius’ claim over Diego Garcia which the UK took by force.
Questions of sovereignty have always been settled either by might or diplomatic negotiation. China wants to resolve the matter through bilateral negotiations with other claimants (ie diplomatically). Little will be achieved by assembling an international lynch mob to “shame” or pressure China. There weren’t as many problems for Filipino fishermen during the time Duterte was engaging with China.

The Permanent Court of Arbitration has no jurisdition to rule on matter regarding sovereignty and the Philippines, in 2012, did not ask the PCA to make any ruling regarding sovereignty. This is often deliberately left out in the western media. Only the World Court has such power. The Philippines simply asked the PCA to rule on fishing rights and whether a particular reef is entitled to an EEZ of 200 NM. 2) The ruling on the 9 dash line, in no way asigned any territiry to Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia or China. It simply means that it is not part of the consideration, neither has China ever claimed that its claims were based on the 9 dash line. 3) USA's biggest hypocracy is while it pays lip service to defending the rule based world order,, USA has never recognized the UNCLOS treaty. 4) The World Court ruled that USA and UK stole the Island of Diego Garcia from Mauritius to build a naval base in the Indian Ocean. UK/USA simply ignored the World Court rulings(This is the World Court; not the PCA).

You see, what you fail to mention because China "deliberately left out" of their propaganda... the only recourse for dispute in the South China Sea is the Tribunal in the Hague DUE TO the agreement both China and the Philippines signed... CALLED UNCLOS. And why is that you might ask? Because in the UNCLOS agreement (again, in which China signed) CLEARLY states that all territorial disputes would be by default settled at the PCA! That signed treaty by the Philippines and China in essence makes the World Court decision... out of their jurisdiction! So let me repeat... China signed the agreement called UNCLOS and in that agreement China signed, China AGREED to have disputes settle by the PCA... now we're being told by China that the UNCLOS agreement it signed... they are above such agreements, only others need to live by the agreement.

I'm from the Philippines first if Sabina is totally illegally occupied by china they probably cause changes in global trade route they can build a gate pass like panama canal which means all passing international cargo ships'companies need to pay in China's government their economic growth increases. That's why they illegally occupied Scarborough Shoal which belongs to us to build a military presence in Sabina. While us sabina shoal is a free trade route for everyone even its awarded to us by UNCLOS. Second is they can be totally dominant over the region taking their own rule for INDO PACIFIC ASIA centrality which means they can do everything. Third is military strategy. They probably won't allow any foreign warship to enter anymore so they can take taiwan easily in the near future. That's why they are so desperate and we will never it happen anymore.

Since when Spratlys belong to the Philippines? _'According to the U.S., it has "not recognized GOP [Government of the Philippine] sovereignty" over the Spratly Islands. During the MDT negotiation and ratification in 1952, in its [U.S.] mind the "Spratly Islands all fall outside Philippine territory as ceded to U.S. by 1898 Treaty with Spain;" this is why "U.S.G. [U.S. Government] maps accompanying presentation of MDT also exclude Spratlys from territories covered by MDT."'_ *- Nothing-Burger? where is the neighbouring countries when China claimed the Nansha (Spratly) Islands and the Xisha (Paracel) Islands? _"__0:13__ During the period of colonialism countries were not yet born. So when they were born, they thought it very unfair that almost all the South China Sea should have been claimed by China. So I think this is at the heart of it. Much of what the Philippines is now doing is the result of domestic politics. President Duterte reached some kind of an understanding with China, including the beached LST on Ren'ai Jiao (Second Thomas Shoal), __0:40__ but under _*_President Maros they felt that that was unfair_*_ and they want to repair that ship which is breaking down and that's approximate cause of the current tension. "_ *- Former Singaporean foreign minister George Yeo highlights the Philippines' role in igniting current tensions by attempting to repair a stranded ship.*

@@Billy_Almighty well its not my job we have officials who responsible for what you ask to me to motivate other country this is a freedom to speech. Pero obyus na ang china ginagawa lahat para kuhain ang wps para gawing military base and soon economic facilities na magiging resources ng gobyerno nila. Did you know why? Because of the economic trade industry living in shipment cargo. China is the only one in ASIA who has money capital and power to do it we only have territory na inaagaw na nila.

The PH saga on the disputed islands with China will not have happened because China have seen too many such International laws being bias towards the US, West and its allies as it was established during the colonial times crafted out by US and the West to take advantage and even abuse it for their own gains and hegemony. From the Falkland war to Iraq,Afghanistan, vietnam wars, even present Ukraine, Gaza wars, Nordstream blast, all have been centered on abuse of International laws, bodies like UN,Nato,ICC,ICJ etc…Even Russia and the Global South are beginning to realize.
So China is being threatened by not only US but all its allies and EU, Nato and its neighbors PH, N.Korea,Japan,India just because China want to assert their right of reunification with Taiwan as Taiwan have no legitimate right to refuse base on its history under China rule since 1946 but China never asserted any pressure. So if the US can craft out laws for their gains, then on the same note China can also do likewise by extending the 9 dash line to protect its sovereignty against hostile US and its allies from interfering with its reunification as it has no choice. However PH is being used by US as its puppet with 15 military bases all aim at China only, to carry out a proxy war with China so that US can determine China’s military prowess. So if PH is wise enough to get out of US cunning ploy just like President Duterte did, everything will end up status quo with peace in SCS as it was before Marcos jr took office!

This will not happen if china respected the philippines territory, you see philippines has no power to defend itself from china everybody knows that, philippines already tried to talk with china last administration, but what did china do? He still trying to steal some of the islands inside the philippones eez, china should have been the big brother that we have in asia but instead of doing that they chose to bully those country that they know lacks the resources to go against them. So what option do we have? Call the USA, this should not happen if china is not too greedy in west philippine sea..
