$110,000 WAUKEGAN OPEN
Bertrand Lanes, Waukegan, III., Aug 3-7, 1984
Mark One For Williams
The Tour left Texas one week earlier, but it was strictly a Lone Star State finale in the $110,000 Waukegan Open as Mark Williams routed Pete McCordic, 257-157, for the $15,000 top prize.
Coming from third place, Williams edged Mike Edwards, 214-213, before eliminating Ernie Schlegel, 207-165. A fifth-year pro from Beaumont, Texas, Williams began the title game with a spare and five straight strikes, dooming McCordic of Houston to his sixth PBA second-place finish without benefit of a title.
Williams, also a non-winner going into the event, called McCordic, "one of my closest friends. I beat the man I hated to beat the most."
