Totally agree, I had a 6.1 courtesy van from the van centre, no foot rest was annoying. Was very happy to have my 56 plate t5 back. Except for the poor lights, poor brakes, poor speakers, noises and rattles, lack of DAB, tatty seats, noisy cog driven 2.5 and wet dog smell.
Had a T6 highline and a great van, bought a new T6.1 basic model because of the expense involved but i was surprised it came with almost what i had in the T6 Highline, the only things missing were heated windscreen really. Never used my sunglasses holder and tbh until i saw this i never noticed the missing foot rest. The sliding door closes much more easily too so all in all I’m glad i made the switch. I genuinely like all the models I’ve had over the years and i don’t prefer one over the other they are all great vehicles 👍
Agreed, anyone saying the t6 is the better buy hasn't driven or owned a t6.1. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying t6 owners should upgrade, I'd say that's just diminishing returns, but buying right now the 6.1 has so many extra features it's a no brainer especially since the startline 6..1 is essentially a black bumper highline t6 with better stereo, steering, interior and upgradeability.
Loving the content. I bought a new 6.1 in feb and had a full and bespoke campervan conversion. When spending that sort of money that I have saving myself 6k or 8K on a second hand, 30,000 M did not make sense. If the second hand values were not so strong, then perhaps.
From a value for money perspective we do agree, but for a already expensive van we wanted to have the more modern entertainment system, digital cockpit and driving assistants. Our T6.1 California Ocean with automatic gear box also has a foot rest. 🤷♂️
I've just bought a brand new vw transporter t6.1 dsg 150 highline van with extra's. led headlights, reverse camera, heated seats. extra's were nearly £4000 which to me is rip off, i don't have the problem with footrest because there is space with it being automatic. It's the first transporter i've ever owned and i find it cramped even though i'm only 5.8 and not fat, also the storage space in front i find crap too, i did own a mercedes sprinter L2H1 which would have been 3 years old in dec 2023, after 10 days ownership of the transporter i think the mercedes was a better van and it was cheaper, i understand transporters have a big fan base, that said if you ask the wife she'll say don't listen to anything he says he talks crap.
Yeah recently bought a 6.1. My first transport so I have nothing to Compare it with apart from my previous caddy which I miss. In one video this bloke goes on about how good it is tine own a transporter then in this videos he slates the 6.1. It Doesn’t give me much confidence. He did forget to say his model the the T6 has notorious problems with EGR valves. Yeah I think they could have thought about the dash more on the 6.1 but end of the day it’s the last transporter and still holds its value. The fuel economy is crap but it’s still a cool van.
I feel your trying to justify why you dont have one! Personally we bought our t6.1 from new cos we wanted a new van. We wanted to know the inns and out of it! I Personally prefer the look of a t6 or even t5. But that wasnt a option. The foot rest for me isnt a problem as we use cruse control alot so your well rested and its better for posture to be straight. The steering wheel i dont like. I prefer a round one. But again iv learnt to live with it. The fact its a light steering wheel just means your not straining yourself. I feel safe driving mine.
Maybe I’m trying to convince myself as I can’t afford one 🤣 I think all the models are great whichever anyone buys. I expect it probably will be a 6.1 I get in the future. All the negatives are countered with other positives and a lot can be changed, like adding a sun glasses holder or changing the steering wheel.
Not having a footrest in a 6.1 seems to be the central argument of this video 😂 I had a T5 and then a T6.1. Both solid vehicles. Each iteration is different.
What are you carrying? T6.1 is not only an external update, it is a bunch of modern options, including for security. Digital dashboard, power steering, automatic parking, obstacle proximity sensor, lane keeping, trailer assistant and just a super modern interior with modern USB type C. I just bought the T6.1 because of this. How can you drive a modern car in an old showroom and with an old T6 steering wheel that is 12 years old and the same as a 2010 Polo Golf? Personally, for me, this is a death longing ...
Well I’ve not driven a 6.1 but the dash does look nicer. Mine is a 2019 T6 150 Highline, other than being nervous when filling the AdBlue due to all the horror stories on social media it hasn’t caused any dramas. I honestly believe that VW needs to redesign the AdBlue system and make it less sensitive, so I’m told the transit you just bung some in but the T6 seems to be exacting as in put in the exact amount at the exact time. So far it’s been OK as a vehicle and I love it as a camper and fingers crossed we get many happy years camping from it. I wish the cruise was adaptive but that little mod is too costly and that’s about as bad as it gets.
It is sensitive and problems occur when the correct procedure isn’t followed. You should have many happy years in it and not lose a huge amount in depreciation as it’s a Transporter 👍
I’m warming too it. Just doesn’t feel as planted, not as connected with the road, the feedback isn’t the same. However, i need to tell myself, it’s a van, not a car for racing 🤦🏼♂️
VW's have a lot of money to make up because of their cheating and the subsequent fines. Expect to get less for your money. Add to that dealerships charging a fortune for "non warranty" issues. I was recently told I needed to pay £2300 to replace a clutch an dual mass flywheel with 8k on the clock.
Every owner will find something they don't like in the next iteration of their vehicle. just look at the chatter around the T7 and ID Buzz. I'll be doing a 2 year, 60,000KM review of my T6.1 in a few weeks.
The 140hp engine and the 102hp engines are exactly the same. The 140 has a stronger gear box with 6 speeds, the 102 has 5 speeds. I have the 102 euro 5 with no issues at all and has been remapped to 180hp. I have not driven a 6.1 but removing the foot rest due to the electric steering is a big no and the sunglasses case! Plus I can’t get out of my mind the paddle board paddle on the front end lower bumper of the 6.1
i have both. the 6 .1 is better protected under body. have a look at a video to see what i mean. i have saw some t5s badly rusted . t6.1 looks like it will last a lot longer.
Yes mate, too many cheap plastic components for the make believe global warming, and also lots of sacrifices in confort and expenses when you downgrade to addblue.Thank you for your precious advices
Got a T6 ( Euro 6 ) and with the amount of money spent on it over the period we have these vans, the advantages over getting a new one is virtually none existent and probably a back step after aftermarket upgrades. With a good suspension setup, Antiroll bars, upgraded bushes, better sound deadening , new steering wheel and head unit, I honestly think moving to a 6.1 would only be for cosmetic reasons if i were to do it at some point, of which you can just get a T6.1 front end conversion if you really wanted that 6.1 front end look and feel.
Hi there, Have the t6.1 love the exterieur look but will have prefer T6 interieur and more glowe box and foot rest. I dont know about T6 but T6,1 paint is water base and scratch easy! could someone tell me, are both sharing same engine? my 6.1 give me small engine problems since day one!!
I got a T6 LWB 150 and it’s a great van to own, did have problems with the adblue during lock down but so far so good and just this week had a new crank seal and new EGR but I agree 100% the T6 is a much better van than the T6.1 one problem I found when selling one was the van is fitted with emergency call assist but it developed a fault where a tiny little battery that is used for the call assist the battery had died and it was a 2020 model and you can not buy this battery at all it VW own battery and they are on back order but annoying every morning you see on the dash SOS emergency fault making you think I’ve just spent so much on a brand van that got a fault.....not good VW
I’ve had T4 2.8L V6 since new in 2003 with 526 k kms done so far. Recently I bought T6.1 and I hate that piece of 💩. It Has all the gimmicks but is cheap and nasty compared to my old T4. I thought I need to get use to it. In 6 weeks and 1200 kms I still prefer to hop in my old T 4. T6.1 looks more modern, use approx 40% less fuel but it is so impractical. Stupid glove box isn’t big enough to fit the service book in it, the cup handle/hole in the dash? What if you’re having a cup of hot drink? Steamy windows like the song from Tina Turner. If I could buy a brand new T4 I would do it without a blink of eye. Front door unnecessary wide like in sedan and yet can’t get fully open. T4 got a kick panel on the bottom of the door trim to let you help with your leg. Adaptive cruise control is useless in the traffic because in stead of limit the speed to the car at the front of you it almost stop you in the middle of the line. The one positive is the back camera when you trying to hook up a trailer.
Agree with what you saying had a T6 but spent more and got T6.1 purposely so I had a DSG..is it better than my T6.well apart from liking the dsg from the manual I had I miss the foot rest, the red dash lights on a night and the sun glasses holder which I am going to have to ridiculously by an aftermarket one and fit..after the money I spent to buy the van this is Naughty of VW to cut back by take it away..I prefer how the dash curves towards the driver but find annoying they moved the drivers left vent further over near the passenger as used to like the hot air blowing on me when cold but now can only feel the one on the right..less storage is another issue. Who comes up with the ludicrous ideas us beyond me as surely should improve or leave alone..pluss side is automatic folding mirrors is good as went through a few replacements with T6 from hit and drive off.sliding door is smoother and quieter regen..front parking sensors also standard but very sensitive automatically slamming brakes on over nothing!..Do I miss the T6?..yes just wish got it right 1st time round (twin sliders, dsg, leds, comfort dash)
Both are fantastic vehicles, but is the T6.1 enough of an upgrade?

I drive a 2018 transporter t6 tsi 6 speed manual, no dirty diesel. Drive the tsi yourself! It's a nice drive
I do fancy driving a TSI, especially one which someone has tuned to over 300bhp 😁

It definitely does feel more car like. I do like the 6.1, but the more I’ve driven them, the lack of footrest has really frustrated me

Lack of foot rest in the 6.1 is because of the electric assisted steering apparently.
Ah, interesting, didn’t know that
My legs are long enough that it doesn’t matter…
I thought it was due to the location of a larger adblu tank
There is a comfort dash on T6.1... But it's useless, it's literally just silver interior door handles and some piano black around radio and cockpit..
True, but as you say it’s only trim and doesn’t compare to the previous comfort dash
I dont understand the T6 150hp AdBlu problems? What should we be expecting? Cheers Alex.,
