Pretty slick, IF we could get one. At least if I see one at a garage sale or flea market, I'll know what it is. I have a device I inherited that's about 2" wide and deep, 1/4" thick with a spring-loaded U-shaped hinge and an adjustable stop-pin on one side of the U. The body is made of cast iron, and no one knows what it does. Certainly is made well, whatever it is. It's marked "Stanley," but no one I could speak to at Stanley Tools had a clue, either. It could be 75 or more years old, painted dark green.
I finally used my little 3/4" wide hand plane the other day, did exactly what I needed to level a small piece of wood I made to use as a finger rest on a little Epiphone Les Paul Express guitar. It's the shortest scale length at exactly 22" I've ever seen, and with a full-width 1 11/16" nut width. Working great for my old hands that don't want to stretch enough to reach some complex chord shapes in the lower frets, anymore. I'm grateful they made this thing. I made this finger rest out of 1/4" mahogany plywood, and had to taper the back so it was the right height along the body from the bridge pickup to the neck pickup. I did the majority of the tapering with a belt sander, but there was a little hump right where the taper begins I didn't want to use the sander for and risk getting the piece TOO thin. The little plane worked great.
I plant my right pinky when I play (fingerstyle), and the strings were too far off the body for what I'm used to, having played Gibsons most of my adult life professionally (62 years total, now), and the pickguards were always level with the PU mounting rings, at exactly the right height for me. This little ax had nothing. I'll be posting a video of "All The Things You Are" that I arranged in the 1970s, and I recently found I could no longer reach important chord shapes on any of the "full-size" guitars I own, and there are many to choose from. It seems to be working well, and I almost have it where I used to have it. I always enjoy your little demos of unusual tools, great stuff man, THANKS!
