- @Extreme_Band are back with yet another single from this quite frankly fantastic new album. It's called Other Side Of The Rainbow. A lot of you have asked me to react to this Extreme song as you fear I may be critical of some very particular lyrics in it. A lot of you know my feelings around this. Have Extreme just committed the ultimate songwriting sin? Tell me what you think in the comments.

Pat Badger is one of the most ridiculously underappreciated musicians on the planet. He can sing, he is one of the best bass players on the planet and he is as funky as anyone.
True dat! And that new drummer has to make his job a lot more fun! They're still funky but now its a Zeppelin funk. And that doesn't suck!🤘
This! 🤘
@craighill3715 That "new drummer" has been there for around 16 years now... 😆
@@baolbardotbulsara bad thing is I just discovered Saudades De Rock about a month ago! After "Waiting" I thought they were done. But since Mike Mangini he's new to me!👍🤣
@@baolbardotbulsara Not to mention he played with Nuno on most of his side projects since more than a decade lol
"Listen to that bit of vocals...."
Pure Freddie. Took me back to their set at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert! ❤
The best it was extreme and George Michael
Yes. So much Queen here, chords and melody. Awesome.
I heard it as well..
I heard a touch of Jeff Buckley myself but get the Freddie comparison.
Mate I like your stuff but pleas! A little more song & less of this is all about me……….
I can’t play this song enough. I absolutely love it. The Video is perfect for the song and every member is spot on in their part. I was never an Extreme fan until I heard this song 🎵 l was a Nuno fan since before he made it big. He grew up in the next town over from me and I still see his brother Paul to this day.
As always you are enjoyable to watch and listen to.
Thanks for sharing with us.
The part of the song where Gary looks to the sky and really belts… and does him ‘oooooooooohhhhh’ - that whole section (middle 8) sounds SO MUCH like Freddie. LOVE IT… 🩷 Thank-you Justin for your insightful (and fun) analysis!!!
I'm so glad it's not just me that noticed it
Crown lands singer/ drummer has similar vocals justin please check them out they're a canadian power duo, you'll love it ❤
My thoughts exactly!
When he looks at the sky/sun he sings a segment of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". The part with the sun and the clouds.
Hold up! '?' "Ooooooooooohhhh....." Suppose you're right.😊😂
This album is so f'n good! And the timing of the release is phenomenal. I will remember this summer with this badass soundtrack. The whole album is a masterpiece. Always something different with each song. Just can't get enough. And this song especially makes me wanna play my acoustic guitar hardcore. I'm just thankful for the music they did put out
Beautiful song. Perfectly crafted. Those vocal harmonies OMG. And the bass section & drums are SOOO so good. Cannot stop listening the album since a month. Seriously. It´s excellent.
I just got back from a very short road trip in the UK with my 17 year old son, and we listened to this album several times. It’s just brilliant (personal favourite is “Here’s to the Losers). Superb vocal harmonies, plenty of double kick drum abuse, absolutely blinding guitar playing, insanely eclectic choices and most importantly some brilliant songs. It was the soundtrack to a father and son bonding moment, which I’ll always be grateful for!
The more I listen to this tune the more I believe it’s up with some of their absolute best
What a return ❤
To everyone who counted Gary Cherone out after the Van Halen debacle, this is how he says "eff you". Wow! What a vocal. Welcome back, Extreme!
his vocals on VH were so bad they were trying to get him to sound like sammy or something
I still say Brian and Roger should have gotten him to sing in Queen instead of Adam
I'm pretty sure they had another album after the VH gig. The one with the Portuguese title that is hard as hell to find a physical copy of.
@@65boogerbutt With you 100% on this. Gary is a rock singer.
@@michaeldrayer5429 I mean "welcome back" to where I think/hope this album is going to take them. :)
I fully acknowledge I am an Extreme fan. I didn't get this song when it appeared on RUclips, but in the album it suddenly made sense. Honestly.... This is one of the best rock power ballads you'll hear. I genuinely found it quite moving. Not ashamed to admit it. Everyone rightly say Bettencourt now has the EVH crown, but credit has to go to Cherone. I'd say he's next in line to the likes of Sammy Hagar. He somehow managed to get more gravelly but kept his range too. God, to be that talented!
Damn! This is soooooo good and wish more like this was coming out! So many great artists don't get the air time they deserve and you either have well established artists like this or you really have to go out of your way to find them! Putting this one on repeat for a large number of plays!✌️
That always happen with the radio and casual listeners, only listen to what's supposed to be cool at any given time
@halldorsturluson1449 You are right about that! Love Spotify for that reason! So many amazing artists that I have never heard of before! ✌️
Just a brilliant album. This song... a pop melodic masterpiece. With any justice, this will be massive. The whole thing is killer.
NuNo it isn’t.
Well said!
Every song they have put on the tube is a hit!
I’m thinking if this song was launched in 1990….. With MTV and radios…..
If only,......Extreme and The Darkness would be a unbelievably excellent show,....I must say. What a combo it would be of amazing artists
I saw the darkness support extreme on the saudades de rock tour and met Justin after the gig in Glasgow. Phenomenal gig. Got tickets to see them in Glasgow again in November
I saw them both in Manchester Academy. Love Justin he is a crazy guy. Just like Derek, got my tickets for the new tour in November.
Justin supported extreme with his other band hot leg years ago in Glasgow
@@charlenemcaulay5509Holy crap, I think you're right! Crazy how the memory plays tricks on you. I was only there to see extreme tbh! 😂
For some reason when you said Tesla it came out as The Darkness. 🤷♂
Nuno said THIS song has his favorite solo, despite the Rise solo getting all the buzz. He never disappoints.
Gas lighting 101. This solo is not as good as many of his other solos, and you know it. Don't let anyone gas light you. You were programmed before you even heard the song.
@@mercedese5507None of that is “gaslighting”. Gaslighting is where an ‘abuser’ tries to make someone feel self-doubt or confusion(generally to take the attention off themselves). The hype around “Rise” came from people’s reactions to the RUclips video.
You’re making it deeper than it is.
Everyone seems to be throwing around the term “gaslighting” like it’s gonna go out of style.
The term I think you’re looking for is “brainwashing”, but even that is a stretch.
Like I said, it’s not that deep. Ironically enough, Nuno himself recently said he doesn’t think “Rise” is the best on the album and loves when people have different perceptions of which performances are better(he said in his latest interview with Rick Beato).
Nuno is right. This is better.
@@KickflipGnasty Lol!!! He just REALLY wanted to use the term gaslight over and over, whether he was using it right or not. 😂
@@jog8483 Yes 🤣👊🏻
I loved this song !!!!! The album is something I was really longing to hear. There is hope once again for amazing music thanks for this gift extreme.
i Listen to my new "Six" cd in bed last night and i was totally smiling the entire time and shaking my head in disbelief. This is one of the best albums by any band in a long long time. Not a bad song on it. Justin was killing me through this entire video.
I did the exact same thing wow
Your channel is the best thing ever! Can’t wait to see you guys on tour up here in Canada!
Insightful explanation on how Extreme did not rhyme “baby” with “crazy”. You could be a successful defense lawyer in the US, haha!
I enjoy your videos so much! 😅 I love this song! The entire album is great. I don’t know if it’s just me, but there are times when Gary sounds like Chris Cornell, especially when he goes into his upper register. Have fun in St. Louis!
What an absolutely beautifully written and executed song this is.
Nunocorn
I'm right with you! I tend to lean towards a chunky fair but that song is so freaking good! And Nuno's gtr work is stellar as usual but Gary sings the hair off this song! And as a bass player Pat's work is just perfect! Horns up to Extreme🤘🤘🤘
I remember when Extreme released More Than Words. People going to their concerts were surprised to see a rock band. Thank goodness they still can rock. The latest album is great. Hard to find new good music.
@@Jims_Camera_at_dawn 6 and their 08 album are crazy good! Rival sons is a great band as well. If you fancy something more metal, Elegant weapons is awesome!🤘
Sure is man. The whole album is amazing
That little vocal thing that Gary did, for some reason reminded me of, dare I say it, Freddie Mercury…
He does sound like Freddie there, and the music sounds like Queen in that part.
Keep doing what you're doing. I really enjoy you classy analysis of songs.
Great tune...i llove hearing your disection of the parts and the whole picture.....us who have have not studied music theory are blown away.....i feel like i'm a room of tax accountants talking irs code....and i'm sitting in the back of the room saying....i don't care it sounds like a hot song and i can grove to it with the windows down and doing 75mph in my car....
Always fun to hear you talkjk about these guys. They're just brilliant and I'll be figuratively wearing out this new album.
The Middle 8/bridge vocal is something Freddie Mercury would have been proud of...
It's also the only redeeming feature aside from the solo.
It's their new Whole Hearted, will get them on the airwaves because it's a beautifully crafted song but Nuno keeps his foot in the door to appease us guitar players too! The vocals are excellent, such great harmonization! I can't wait to see them live in August!!!
It's, not even 1% ad good as whole hearted. Frankly I think it's a mediocre song at best
I love it. When the guy turns up the volume on the car radio and Nuno plays his solo I got chills. Garys voice is super amazing 2..so impressed with the album.
Chef's kiss to that bit. Heck, chef's kiss to ALL of it!
Totally!!
Very entertaining review! How can I not subscribe after this gem at 2:52 ? "Nuno's got one of those heads that really suits that kind of hat." In all seriousness, enjoying listening to this album several times over and reading all the comments!
I’ve always enjoyed the melodic side of Extreme more than their heavier side. Gary and Nuno vocally harmonize well together.
I’m in St Louis! Welcome, I hope you have a great visit!
Not to be weird - but I love the fact that you are such a true fan of music, and the art surrounding it. So refreshing -
I used to book some pretty infamous clubs in the Bay Area, for many years, and were it not for music, I might very well be dead. Thank you for kicking ass -
Love you reviews!! funny but educational!!!
Wow Justin your in my city st Louis huge fan of you and your band , personally I know your brilliant and have a gift thanks for doing what you do
As a outsider having never heard your music before your channel, I am loving your commentary and charisma.
This song really shows their pop music songsmith talents and mature musicianship ! Just soo good
Can't stop listening the album.
Brilliant!!
@JustinHawkinsRidesAgain, will you do a review of the whole Six album in a single video?
Personally, I absolutely love every track after just a couple of listens. However, I’d be interested to hear your initial reactions to songs such as “Small Town Beautiful” and “Beautiful Girls”, which at first seem incongruous next to the likes of “Rise”, “#Rebel” and “Banshee”.
However, Extreme have always included diverse material on their albums (like Queen) so I shouldn’t have been surprised. It’s amazing that a single band can write songs in a variety of genres and make every one a winner.
This is the first album I’ve looked forward to in years and yet it has exceeded my expectations. It is also the first album that has inspired me to crank up the volume in my car to obnoxious levels for as long as I can remember! Top Tip: It’s the only way to listen to the chorus on “Other Side Of The Rainbow”! 😉
What a Beautiful song!! I Love it! Great video. In addition to Justin being a superb singer and musician, he is so good at this and he’s So handsome & has the most beautiful, youthful skin!!! Were the end of theme song fuzzy close-up microphone sounds planned lol? Of course they were, he’s Justin Hawkins! With a great sense of humor as well!!🥰
Just love their nod to queen with Gary’s mid8 vocal and Nunos trill solo complete with curly guitar lead❤
Mr Hawkins: 1/ internal rhyme is more correctly defined as the presence of rhyming words within a line/phrase of a poem or song, where one or more of those rhyming words occur at the line's beginning or middle (pretty much anywhere other than the end). There are lots of examples in Shakespeare and Edgar Allan Poe; you also famously hear internal rhyme in the opening of Hey Jude: "don't make it bad/ take a sad song," etc. Internal rhyme examples abound in poetry regardless of rhyme scheme and metre. 2/ What YOU seem to be a stickler for is perfect rhyme, instances of end rhyme where the stressed vowels and consonants in the rhyming words exactly match, barring the initial consonants, such as lazy/hazy. But you should know that "near rhyme" or "slant rhyme" (it's called loads of other names) -- where words either lack assonance (the same vowels) or consonance (the same consonants), say, come/doom or baby/crazy or queen/regime -- is an accepted literary device. Emily Dickinson used slant rhyme a bunch, on purpose. So, while the lyrics of the song in question may not be the best ever (on account of the use of too many worn-out phrases and clichés), baby/crazy passes the test. The assonance overrides the difference in middle consonants. Seeing as I'm a stodgy lit prof who loves rock'n'roll and your channel, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to weigh in, and ponderously. Hey, it's what we do best. :D Cheers.
This is beautiful! 🤓❤️
Two thumbs up for mentioning Emily!
And I’m guessing he knows most of this already. He’s mentioned his love of poetry many times throughout these videos and on a couple of The Darkness records. I think he just has a “hang-up” about “baby & crazy” (maybe because of its overuse?) and not about slant rhymes.
Thanks
Come on Extreme can do no wrong! What an epic song! My brush with Extreme happened many many years ago. I was in a band in southern New Hampshire but we rented a practice space in Charlestown Massachusetts a suburb of Boston. When we were moving our gear into our new "room" we were bitching and moaning because it appeared as though we were in a storage locker. We were, in fact, in a storage unit but when we looked at the giant boxes and all of the locked gear we noticed the name Extreme stenciled on the side of all the crates!! We were super psyched to be rehearsing in Extreme's storage room ... sadly their gear didn't stay in storage for long so we didn't get as much mojo from being next to their gear as we had hoped! But it was still super cool!! 😁🤘
Ive pretty much written the same chorus a few times over the last 30 years lol We call it familiar but fresh in songwriting.
Just as Justin is letting the 'baby/crazy' thing go, I too am letting the over used quote go. They used it well & even though it has been over used to the extreme...(no pun intended originally but now that I see what I did, I'm owning it 😉)...the quote is over used for a good reason: it's a moving & thought provoking quote. Extreme pulls it off, I think.
My English Major heart feels compelled to share. One of my fav poets, Sir Alfred Lloyd Tennyson wrote this in 1850! In "Memoriam", a tribute to his deceased friend, he wrote:
“I hold it true, whate’er befall;
I feel it when I sorrow most;
‘Tis better to have loved and lost,
Than never to have loved at all.”
Side note: "Most" & "lost" don't rhyme either but "befall" & "all" do. Poets do this all the time. They'll even pronounce the words incorrectly when reciting the poem to 'make' them rhyme. If great poets do this then I think we can forgive Extreme the baby/crazy "rhyme". The RULE should be: that if you are great then you can pull it off. If you are not then you cannot.
DAMN NUNO IS INSPIRING 🎸 One of the guys who made me want to learn electric guitar. I’m going to see these guys when they tour Australia.
Thanks Justin, your channel is one of my go-to’s for learning about new music🎶 🙌🏻
“Is it better to have loved & lost than to never have loved at all?” -therapy bills & ptsd say perhaps not- is there a poetic way to say that?😂 (without the term crazy-baby of course😅)
A rhyme that doesn't??? I'm intrigued! Let's listen!!
Much love to you Mr. Hawkins ❤
My favorite vocal on Extreme- Six. The entire record is a welcome return. Since 3-sides, this is their best effort IMO. Hope you are having fun in the States, Justin! Cheers!
Great song. Good to see you in America. Would love for you to sing to me on my birthday, since we have the same birthday 😊
Damn...come hack across to the Kansas City area, and I'll buy your drinks and food, just fort stories. 👍✌🤟
Lol it would be very funny i guess!!!
Have listened to the album a couple of times a day since it dropped.
Absolute masterpiece!!!!!
Dear sir. Love your videos, love the cut of your jib. Have a great day all ze best to all involved.
I would say the use of "crazy" may have been on purpose as it nearly rhymes and so sounds ok to the ear, however the change in rhyming lyric with "crazy" reflects the chordal change with the lyric, making it stand out even more as if to emphasise it. Either that or I'm thinking like a Literature teacher lol. Great stuff with the videos, a new hobby of mine I must admit! Please keep it up!!
The first time hearing this I was not impressed. But it has grown on me since. Thank you Justin! You just confirmed my feelings about this song. Nuno - epic as always.

Tennyson "In Memoriam"
This is a lovely tune. Greta Van Fleet, take note!
Yea, great sentiment. Loved it when Bret Michaels mentioned it some 40 yrs ago.
@@qxflyer I heard Brett borrowed "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" from somebody else, too. Dylan Thomas, maybe? I'm not familiar.
Greta Van Fleet take note?
This has some of the most generic, snd overused lyrics out there.
Regardless of your personal taste, listening to Greta Van Fleet’s most recent release, is far beyond this song, or the first one they released.
It’s nostalgia hype 5000, and Nuno’s solo, was the only interesting thing about the first song.
At least Great Van Fleet are trying a new thing, and it’s far more original then this fluffy sounding song.
I had Extreme’s first two albums, just because of the songs I heard, after they had the two acoustic hits. I was a fan in 1991-92, when they were one of the last bands tied to 80’s metal(though unfairly, and stupidly), that was having some success. But, Extreme III just wasn’t very good. I followed Nuno’s career, listening to him try to share his spark, with other bands. So, I’m not just trolling or hating.
I’d love for this to be as incredible as Extreme fans are saying it is, but even your comment, about Tennison, and GVF taking notes, makes little sense.
You _are_ saying that Great Van Fleet should steal from better sources, I guess? Or what? 🤣
I’m really not sure.
Everyone used to say they were a Zeppelin ripoff, so that’s why I mention stealing. I don’t think they actually used Zeppelin lyrics, but I’m never surprised anymore by anything I find out.
Cheers

THIS IS SUCH AN AMAZING SONG!
first thing i noticed as well was the cliched lyrics. That bridge is superb and of course these guys still write fantastic songs.
Imho 3 Sides to Every Story is one of their best albums.
Looking forward to hearing their new record.
I want to book you bro!!
Woohoo, welcome to St. Louis. Hope you continue to enjoy your stay.
I am hooked on this channel... LOL. As per this episode, The "shred" era of music, especially in LA at the time, single handedly brought down the LA music industry with pyro technique guitar indulgence. Sure he can shred to the extreme, but the solo does not fit the style. Hence, the exodus to Seattle and grunge in the late 90s and the end of LA shred hair metal. I am still waiting for the next big thing to reveal itself in music. Perhaps technology will have to merge with something else to create this. cheers.
I must admit, when I was an edgy teenager that hated the world and listened to nothing but Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Suicidal Tendencies I used to hate on Extreme and other bands that I thought were "pop rock" but as I get older I am really starting to appreciate bands like Extreme. I never really understood the fascination with Nuno at the time because I feel he was overshadowed by other guitarists like Slash (or the amazing talents of the early 80's rock stars like Randy Rhodes). I really appreciate this channel as it opens up my mind to music theory in ways that I would not have been open to 30 years ago. @JustinHawkins, I would love to see your thoughts on Bruce Dickinson's performance on the current Iron Maiden "The Future Past" tour.
write some new music @Justin you are one of the best vocalist's out there... what a range you have ...love you !!!

Didn't they do a second album but the label rejected it? I love VH (esp. Sammy), but we're lucky they didn't implode entirely.
@@rugxulo I heard something like that too but don’t know if it’s true or not. Yes, I’m glad they didn’t implode entirely either. The album notes state "tubes and speakers were harmed during the making of this album" that just about sums it up really, its a stonking return to form.
I agree on the concept of choosing and staying with your chosen non, half or full rhymes.
When you were talking about their attire, and said "People of the Land," it brought to mind this brilliant film, Blazing Saddles Look for a video clip called this exactly "Blazing Saddles 1974 - People Of The Land." It's a larf, Justin. Oh, the band is great. What a comeback!
Not every sentence has to rhyme. There are half rhymes too. Love this song. Fantastic album too
I got to know Pat a bit after buying his house 11 years ago in my home state of MA . I couldn’t agree more with the previous commenter who said he’s under appreciated, which happens when you play opposite a guy like Nuno. It would happen to the best bass player to ever walk the earth next to Nuno… He’s Hell of a bass player and all around good dude so I’m thrilled to see Extreme get the well deserved attention from this latest record because it’s really telling how big the appetite is for actual instruments this and a real band with a raw sound. it’s something I hope the music industry will notice because the buzz is awesome to see. Nuno belongs in The discussion for the rock guitar’s Mt Rushmore and anyone who can sound like that after plugging straight in to a Marshall DSL (the fisher price, my first Marshall of Marshall’s) is a master of his craft and the only guy I know who is almost entirely the sound of his own fingering and playing style unmasked by recording wizardry and effects. Not that there is anything Wrong good recording or effects, but it takes a special player to sound that good that raw and it never hurts your band to be a world class talent either because it brings other kinds of fans over. Pat gets the job of playing opposite stage from Nuno for over 30 years and there isn’t a bass player on the planet who wouldn’t be over shadowed a little there. Pat is the guy you’d want to spend time around and is really a gem of a human being on top of his playing talent. Just don’t wear a Nirvana or Pearl Jam shirt if you meet him and he’ll be greatest guy you ever met in rock n roll. Cheers to Pat and all of Extreme for the Album, it couldn’t have come at more desperate time in music. Thank heavens for RUclips where the demand is defined by views, and not the widget counting suit pricks.
Thanks for the content Justin. Ps don’t waste any of that tape you’re hoarding, last of the golden age…

Absolute masterpiece
Great song great album. Middle 8, I feel Garry is reaching into his inner Freddie Mercury influence. Nuno has stated in an interview with Rick Beato, that solo is pure Brian May influenced-I can totally hear that. Great band, great new album.
If I hire you to sing my child's birthday, do you prefer to perform before or after they bring the baby goats around for the petting zoo portion?
On a serious note Justin, I know this is the hill that you have chosen to die upon, but I would contend that baby and lazy do in fact rhyme, due to the number of syllables and the "ay" and "ee" sounds. That being said, it is a lazy fucking songwriting crutch and should be abolished henceforth.
@@StacyODellBaby - Crazy 🤪 No lazy 😉
Smashing, isn't it. A bit more radio friendly than the other releases from Six so far and I hope that it gets some airplay. The world needs to know that this band is back and better than ever.
The 2:56 moment, I thought, was a bit reminiscent of Freddie (and maybe the curly guitar lead for Brian?) but the song is an absolute banger...
That's the problem though isn't it? The truly best extreme tracks aren't made for radio.
Alot of this new stuff sounds like it's by the numbers.
YOOO I'm from STL thats crazy the man himself is in town 😂
The song is an amazing pop rock song. And the minor chords mixed in there give it a melancholy but hopeful vibe. Tbe maybe, baby, crazy rhyme doesn’t matter because the in the context of the lyrics Gary sings in between each the words make total sense.
Wait ! Don't skip over Available for birthday parties! 🎂 How much is the artist fee?
The chorus is giving me Outfield vibes. Really nice.
