The overdraft of the checking by default will draw from the primary brokerage account. I have significantly more cash in my brokerage than my checking, so to limit potential fraud, I have the overdraft disabled.

If you mean FDIC insured, it's not, but that's normal. There aren't any brokerage accounts that are FDIC insured due to the volatility of stocks. Only Checking and Savings accounts can be FDIC insured.

brokerage is an investment account. checking account is just a normal bank account

What if the ATM you use has a atm fee?
You will be charged the ATM fee but Schwab will refund you that ATM fee when you get your monthly bank statement.
