Building A Modern Industrial TV Stand

  • Metalworking and welding is something I am super passionate about. I find it to be extremely fulfilling, beautiful in how it looks, and its also much faster than traditional woodworking for furniture. So when my good buddy Ramy, asked me for some advice for his obnoxiously large TV he recently build, I knew I was going to be thinking something metal. He couldnt find anything online so I gave in and made him this one.

This build features not only some hilarious comedy...... IMO. But it also is packed with metalworking tips and ideas that I use all the time and will be teaching at my course at this years SPRING MAKE. IF you're looking to attend an awesome maker show, with hands on experience, check out SPRING MAKE APRIL 23-25 2019 in Cleveland OH. Use code MADEFORPROFIT to save $200.

Magnets totally affect the welding arc. Particularly noticeable with TIG but OK if you can get the magnet more than a few inches away. The welding arc is an electric current and and so is deflected by magnetic fields. Nice project by the way.

If you want to dig deeper it is called arc blow, run into this problem when working on ships and offshore equipment that use powerful magnets for compass and leveling. To combat this switch your machine to AC instead of DC to complete the circuit.

John Malecki they're not cool like the cordless grinders, but scope out a small 6amp 4.5" unit. I've got a half dozen Milwaukee ones, they're compact enough that you can wrap your hand around them just shy of the gear housing and I find they work great for detail work that requires a light touch. Only thing better are the little 2" sanding pads on a die grinder.
Chris White, I don't love being "that guy" either, but couldn't not point that one out.

Yeah, if you get too close to the magnet and you will have to chase that arc all over the place. Heat is not good for magnets, a few quick tacks is about all you should do with magnet at weld joint (other side of joint) otherwise they will rapidly weaken.

Pretty cool John. I have a question about the paint you used. Was it Latex or Oil based DTM? Reason I ask is because of your Respirator Filter choice. I'm a Commercial Painter and the filter you used was for oil base paints. It will not filter out Latex based paints. You need a pink HEPA Filter for that. Plus no offense the beard doesn't allow your mask to seal anyway. At least that's what I've been told. Just food for thought...

i thought it was wood in the opening segment, in the end you could see how it got that way but all metal might be poor on acoustics from the TV (depends on the TV speaker orientation, down firing could cause drumming on the metal, wood is more forgiving on that), looks great tho. Must have taken a long time to do all that welding. Wish i could weld :-( you are lucky to have this great array of tools and workshop facilities to use to create these great projects

Electricity and magnetism as forces can be unified into electromagnetic radiation, they are like twins. Together they make light and microwaves and infra red lamps etc. Yep I guess the magnet deflects the stream of plasma that you are making and so the heat goes somewhere else. You could get some of those "no-magnet" magnets that don't interact with electric currents but they unfortunately only exist in a different type of universe.

As a welder for almost 10 years it’s called magnetic arc blow. Essentially when you weld you are creating a small magnetic field around your part, when you introduce a magnet it’s makes the poles in your weld get squirly thus weld looks like poo poo, chances of John seeing this are low so here’s an Easter egg. If you take welding cable and strip the insulation and wrap it around a non ferrous metal(stainless) you can magnatise it

Damn! That’s exactly the kinda TV stand I’m currently looking for, but all the ones I find aren’t wide enough and I’d have to pay with my first born. Good job!

Hi John. I really like your stand. I'm an welding Instructor with the Salt Lake Community college. The question was Does the magnets effect the welds? The answer is yes in the flow of the electricity for the arc. It gets distorted, but not to the point of the weld fusing to the base material or the joint your welding. you may see discontinuity of the weld face or undercut an an example. Now Electricity will flow to the point of least resistance, when you add a magnet in the joint closest to the weld point and the electricity get redirected slightly that's when it may effect the weld itself, but using magnets to tack the joint together the welds themselves are not effected because when the liquid metal solidifies, its doesn't hurt the grain structure because the magnets are just not that strong to effect it to much. I hope this helps understanding how welds work and to answer the question.

Really the only time the magnet REALLY effects a weld is when there's a potential for super high pressure leaks or stand alone structural welding. Other than that, the welding effects the magnet more than the magnets effect the welding

Hey John I’m in a ROP welding class at my high school and I was wondering if you have any blueprints or plans for this build. If you did I would love and try to see if I can build it myself. If not sorry for bothering and have a good day.
