History of the Veterans Memorial Highway

The Veterans' Memorial Highway leading to the summit of Whiteface Mountain is a remarkable blend of historical significance, engineering ingenuity, and natural beauty. Built nearly 20 years before the ski area, the project began with a groundbreaking ceremony led by then-Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt on September 11, 1929, and the road was officially opened in 1935 by Roosevelt as President. Originally constructed with the labor of horses and steam shovels, this highway remains an engineering marvel to this day, offering an awe-inspiring journey to one of the highest peaks in the Adirondacks. In 1938, the addition of an elevator to the summit further enhanced its accessibility.
