Yes but it had an ablative coating, that's similar to the Heat-Sheild on the base of a space vehicle re-entry capsule. It is designed to burn away so resist and protect the structure against the heat caused by the supersonic / hypersonic compression of the air. Apparently it's this compression that causes more heating than simple friction.
The ablative coating was not entirely successful and the X-15 suffered burn-through damage, it needed partial rebuilding prior to any further flight.
The Space shuttle used special tiles of course but clearly these always required intensive inspection & refit; they could not be made compatible with commercial operations.
I suspect air-breathing Hypersonic vehicles need to manage the way they interact with the compression effect through aerodynamic design to avoid melting. It sounds like a risky way to travel.

    • @dougyates7218
      @dougyates7218 2 года назад

@@sierrawhiskey5155 You make some good points, however, there must be a way to bypass the effects of friction. The U.A.P.'s that the government has shown surely have over come both air and water at speeds that boggle the mind. I think it is some kind of force that surrounds the vehicle that enables the craft to travel in a bubble of some kind. The Russians have been successful in a new torpedo that is super fast underwater due to some kind of water encapsulation process. Please Google it. Peace. p.s. I once got to hold one of the tiles that you speak of. All I can say is, WOW!

I may be a lonely autistic EOD Team Leader, dreamer, and science nerd of many yrs, but the possibilities of hypersonic travel has always been is a fascinating thought puzzle to ponder. Given the limitations of modern materials as well as the heat generated by such a fast moving objects within the atmosphere, I have been able to come up with one single possible solution to quickly end any near future war.
Imagine an weapon so fast, that, should it drop down to supersonic speeds. In order to provide any tactical advantage, such a weapon would literally need to be fired from from the sky via supersonic speeds to engage any ‘conventional’ weapons cashes or hidden bases. Then it dawned on me. This aircraft would have to create a ‘hypersonic-window’ via a ‘jump-shield-pocket’ in its trajectory. Meaning a separate weapon/missile launched from such a conventional supersonic aircraft to literally ‘gulp’ and superheat the ‘air-gas-plasma’ into a shield that would allow the original initiating aircraft that fired the hypersonic conventional aircraft to ‘ride’ the ‘shield-pocket’ in relative safety and only the original launching craft would be within the shielding point as any other aircraft would instantly destabilize the environment and be instantly destroyed. While utilizing the drafting protection as a shield. (Similar to an F1 race car slipstreaming a lead car without burning the extra fuel. This is, of course just an oversimplified metaphor for providing a partial window concept of understanding.) Then when the target area is reached, the weapon controlling aircraft would need to drop down to full supersonic speed which would allow it to break from the hypersonic wave through the use of a shaped multiple frequency hypersonic sonic distortion wave which would allow the aircraft to safely fall back and continue to maintain control of the hypersonic weapon. However, due to the distortion, speed, and proximity of the hypersonic weapon, only the originating aircraft that fired the weapon would be the only craft to abort of control the impact any designated target. (ie ultrasonic shaped pulse) there by slowing the aircraft to to under Mach 4.75 and below. While falling behind the hypersonic lead guide-weapon, maintaining an electronic means of controlling the hypersonic weapon could still be controlled via a coded laser instruction set from the originating aircraft who initiated the original attack. Under these circumstances, only the originating aircraft would have the means of control or detonation.
This system itself could carry various payloads which be shielded by the hypersonic weapons tungsten case and housing. Even with that absence of High Explosives, the huge kinetic energy potential of such a weapon could provide a small yields of destruction similar to a small tactical nuclear weapon, without the Poisoning and radiological affects on the people, animal life, and vegetation. Such weapons could decimate entire enemy Carrier fleet, a Foreign Capital, or through the kinetic means of the kinetic energy alone, any enemy HQs would fall as there would be NO DEFENSE and would lead to a very short conflict which would ultimately save millions of lives on both sides.

For a number of reasons I'm tending to doubt this.....we cant even get our hypersonic missile program off the ground and to date have had 3 test failures......plus, the government recently announced that although they have successfully tested a new 6th gen jet, it wouldnt even be deployed until the 2030's, and that the advanced avionics for it are still to be developed.....PLUS.....in order for a hypersonic jet to be viable, a 6th gen (6g) communications system has to be developed for it that can circumvent the hot plasma that surrounds the craft at that speed. Even the Chinese, who are ahead of us in hypersonic technology, only recently came out with a 6 gen communications system as such for it's hypersonic missiles, and that is only in the testing phase........ I just seriously think we are quite a ways off from this. .....a long way.......

Traveling at hypersonic speed doesn't create G forces. It's turning at hypersonic speed which creates vicious G forces (not to mention massive drag-induced instability).
It'd work like anything which already goes very fast. Making extremely huge wide turns, or just waiting to decelerate to make a turn.
This video really doesn't appreciate how hard it is to make a fully reusable hypersonic aircraft though. It's orders of magnitude more difficult than making a single-use hypersonic rocket or missile.

Back in 2004, I used a Laminar Research, X-Plane flight simulator to develop a Hyper-Sonic aircraft that I named "Aurora". After I finished developing the plane, I decided to Fly using a VATSIM - global ATC network. I filed a flight plan starting at London Heathrow airport, passing over Mumbai, India and flew all the way to the Sydney airport in Australia. Commercial jet planes would take about 20 hours (10,800 miles). I was able to fly from London to Sydney using the Aurora. I cruised at an altitude of 350,000 ft and an airspeed of Mach 32. Flight time was 60 minutes ( London gate to runway (10 minutes) + Sydney runway to gate (10 minutes) = 20 minutes ) so the Aurora took 60 - 20 = 40 minutes to travel 10,800 miles.
Aurora has a delta wing and 4 scram-jets + 2 throttle-able rockets. BTW, the Aurora does not create a super/hyper-sonic boom. I earned a virtual commercial astronaut wings !

    • @poloska9471

An altitude of 350,000ft above sea level means you would be flying in space, because space begins beyond the Karman line at about 62 miles above sea level and 350,000 feet is equivalent to 66 miles above sea level. Thus, this means your aircraft flew in space while at that altitude.

The problem is melting airframes... There are ways of working around that problem but are super hi tech and need multiple layered 100* core processor computers. You cant cool the airframe with anything that has weight because of space being at a premium. The second issue is that any pilot will have issues with G's on acceleration/deceleration/turning, making pilotless planes more optimal. So is it really feasible? .

The US Air Force or US Space Command has had Hypersonic Missiles and Air Craft since before April 17th 2013! The US Military Hypersonic Missiles Systems produced and developed bye Monsanto Space Systems was Successfully tested on April 17th, 2013! It was Launched from a Space Command Platform in Space Over New Zealand (captured on video), re-entered the atmosphere over El Paso, TX (also captured on video), and hit its target in West, TX (captured on video) all in less than 45 minutes from Launch to Hitting the Target 10,000 miles away?
Before you develop and test launch a Hypersonic Missile System you need a Hypersonic Aircraft to Launch the Missile from? Development on US Military Hypersonic Missile and Aircraft started back in the Early 1980’s on the Nevada Test Range? You would think after 40 years they would have been successful in their Hypersonic Missile and Aircraft programs?
Just like the Stealth Program once the Public was informed about the Stealth Program and Skunk Works Projects the US Military had a Squadron of over 280 Stealth Aircraft sitting on the Tarmac on Secret Bases Around the World!!
Heck your so far behind on your information? I have know about the US Military Hypersonic Systems Development For 20 years!
Now the US Military and US Space Command is in the Design, Development and Testing Stages of Warp Drive Faster than the Speed of Light Engines? The Public has Witnessed some of these Light Speed Engine Tests in Progress Over the US in Several Places over the Last 2 years or so? The Public sees these Tests as UFO’s and and the US Military tells the Public it’s a ICBM or Atlas Rocket Test? Bullshit I have seen Rocket Tests of almost all US Rocket Systems and None were Even Close to What has Been Seen over the Last Few Years!
Try and Update Your Information by About 20-30 Years! So you can get with the Current US Military Development Programs!!
