Should we sign off after this splinter?

  • When our partner splinters and we have values in the suit, we don't like the splinter. Does that always mean we should sign off? When wouldn't we?

4NT is ok: we have 5 spades, Ace of Hearts, and King of Diamonds. That‘s enough opposite the strong hand from declarer. The King of Hearts could be also useful for a Diamond discard. Partner could have AKxx,x, Axx, AQJxx.

    What's about 5D? N has only 2 aces. Shouldn't he reply 5H for 2 aces?

Great question! This partnership is playing 1430 Roman Keycard Blackwood. 5d shows 3 keycards (the ace and king of spades and the ace of clubs). With regular Blackwood, you would be 100% correct

@@thebridgeteachers Oh I forgot that this is what I used to play. I haven't played bridge in 15 years. Thanks for the reminder.
