Alternative to the Chicago screws for the pauldrons, take a u-shaped piece of leather and place it between the plates being riveted. After setting the rivet, the shim can be removed, creating slack in the rivet.
It's a good tip but people should know it has a higher risk of joint failure. I do use this method on delicate parts like finger joints but even then it's not ideal.
