  • A Whooping Crane is not a common sight in southern Alberta. Firstly these birds are endangered, and secondly they normally fly to northern Alberta to breed, by way of Saskatchewan.
I had a chance to spend some time observing one that spent a couple of months in an agricultural area near Calgary this summer, and got to witness some interesting behaviour from the Sandhill Cranes that were spending their summer in the same location. And what a lovely location - a field left for Mother Nature to fill with wildflowers.
This bird is huge, and as you can see at the end, it flew almost right over me, alongside a pair of sandhill cranes. An absolutely amazing experience, I'm so chuffed I got to photograph this massive, rare, endangered, beautiful bird. I'm also glad it didn't poop on me ;o)

It likes to run! Must be quite an effort for a big bird like that to fly. It is interesting how it is interacting with the other birds. It is interesting how birds or animals join other species when their own kind is not around. Great stills at the end. Love that time lapse image😎👍

Interestingly it did seem to wait until the wind had really picked up before it took off. My footage is a bit shakier towards the end as I took the camera off the tripod to be ready for when it flew over. I was so happy to get those shots at the end. Being such a big bird certainly helped me lock on for those bird-in-flight shots 😂
Glad you enjoyed it. I don’t know if you’ve noticed (😉) but I have a bit of a thing for interesting wildlife behaviour 😂
