which has also made the video a little "softer / fuzzier"
This is a holiday camp that was non stop entertainment from breakfast till sundown, (and beyond; the Max Bedford band would often play till 1am) Alas, I wasn't able to film the huge dance hall as this was filmed on Super 8mm film when it was virtually impossible to film indoors.
And because I couldn't film inside, I wasn't able to film my father trying to blow an Alpine horn, or drink a Yard-Of-Ale in the Moulin Rogue bar! (There was one mad exodus from there at lunchtime when about 500 people filed into the "three meals a day" dining room!)
Alas, this film is now one for the archives as the hall has since been purchased by Warners, and converted to an "adults only / no children allowed" relaxing hotel. The outdoor pool has long since been covered, and turned into an indoor pool where you can swim a few lengths before breakfast etc. No more fun and frolics as in the film.
The "kids and teens" in this film would now be into their forties and fifties with kids of their own. (I wonder if any of those adults will recognise themselves!)
The week we went on holiday was also the time of the biggest / violent night time thunderstorms Lowestoft had ever seen. And being right beside the sea, the booms and flashes were terrific!
NB: Now that Gunton Hall in this format no longer exists, the "Best Holiday" mantle now moves a little further along the coast to "Potters" ... but that's a video for another day.
