By 1944 the German army was a shadow of the force that conquered western Europe and the one that had marched into the Soviet Union. Its defeats near Moscow, in Stalingrad, Kursk as well as North Africa and Italy had destroyed most of its veteran and battle hardened soldiers. Though a couple of relatively well equipped and mobile divisions were in France. Most of the German army on the western front consisted of Bodenständige divisions. Basically remnants who were mauled on the eastern front and staffed with third rate (old and wounded) recruits and had no transports to move their heavy equipment like artillery. D-Day was important in speeding up the end of Germany but in no way was it a turning point. That time had already occurred between Stalingrad and Kursk.
