- In this video I unbox the new Sky Q set top box TV system. Sky Q is a 4K Ultra HD ready satellite and Internet TV service from Sky, comprising the Sky Q Silver receiver and the Sky Q Mini box.
Sky Q represents the biggest leap technology advance from the UK broadcaster since the launch of Sky+ a decade ago. It introduces the concept of Fluid Viewing, which means you can watch your recordings on any connected device. I take a closer look at each box, and peer behind some of its covered inputs.
The Sky Q TV System unboxed…
Sky Q is an entirely new premium pay TV platform from UK Pay TV provider Sky. It combines regular satellite Sky channels with downloadable catch-up and Video On Demand, as well as network streaming.
0.29: At the heart of the system is the Sky Q Silver receiver. I asked Sky Q Director of Product Planning and Design Andrew Olson what Q stood for. He said it stands for nothing, it just sounds cool. Well that’s fair enough.
0.40: Like Sky+, the Silver box is a PVR/DVR and has a 2TB hard drive. With 300GB reserved by Sky for push content, 1.7TB is available for personal recordings.
As you can see it’s very slim and has a shiny silver trim. The Q logo glows blue, and there is a WPS button for connecting Sky routers and Sky Q Mini boxes.
The viewing card slot is on the side.
1.15: So on the rear, things are pretty clean. There’s no room for legacy AV. There’s a digital optical audio, covered Ethernet jack, twin USBs. Beside the HDMI output is a covered second HDMI. There’s also twin dish feed.
On the underside we have a small fan.
1.40: Because this is the future, Sky Q is ready for 4K services. The box is Apple AirPlay compatible as well as Bluetooth enabled. This is quite possibly the first ever licensing of AirPlay for a non-speaker device. There are 12 tuners and you can record four channels at once. One new feature is My Q. Here a Continue function allows you to pick up watching on one box, where you left off on another. My Q will automatically record the next episode of a show you were watching. If it's an On Demand programme, it still shows up, but with a download icon.
2.06: Another big change is the remote control. This is the Sky Q Touch, it’s a Bluetooth controller with a touchpad. It also has a built in mic but that’s not activated yet. There are Sky and Home buttons which replace the old planner. You swipe to navigate. There are transport controls and record button.
Quite different from the old Sky remote. It’s nicely made, and I think feels good in the hand. Also in the box is a power lead and an HDMI cable.
3.07: Just to get a sense of how small the Silver is this is my Sky+ box. It’s not particularly big, as you can see, but seems absolutely massive with the Silver on top. A look at the rear shows just how neat and tidy the new Sky q is, even with unused USBs.
3.31: Onto the Sky Q Mini, which is where the system starts to get really interesting. The Silver can stream to two Minis simultaneously. You can watch live TV, any of your recordings or on-demand stuff.
The remote isn’t Bluetooth it’s a standard IR controller, which means nice clickable buttons. You can also use this to control the bigger Silver box.
4.29: So this is the Mini, which lives up to its name. There’s an embossed Sky logo on the top. The front has a WPS button to link to the Silver box.
On the rear there’s an optical audio output, HDMI and Ethernet, here covered, most will use Wi-Fi. You can’t watch 4K through a Mini. It’s HD only. Any 4K recordings on the planner of the main box will not appear on the Mini at all.
Sky Q boxes create there own private mesh network over 5GHz to interoperate. The video stream is a private channel between devices.

Thanks for sharing. I've ordered my sky q. Thursday is the installation day!
Sky Q gets a lot of bad press on the forums, but i can honestly say, that after having it for nearly a month that it couldnt be better. I have the Silver box, and have a wired connection to my router and wireless connection to the mini, and it hasnt dropped once. I dont really have one bad word to say about it except for the price
I upgraded at the best time. Amazing deal, 4k ready with my top of the range Sony OLED and ready for HDR this year. 😎
Outstanding piece of kit well done sky
I think is so incredibly cool
I think sky q is incredibly cool
Sucks that ou cant watch 4k on the mini, also it would be nice that they give you the option to decide which controller you can have with the sky box and the touch remote can be a pain and have a mind of its own sometimes
Very Helpful, Thank You Brother ❤️
That’s the 1tb because it says 2tb on the front I think
Is it a 4K cable the comes with the 2TB SKY q silver box
I have a problem with my sky mini it's says channel is unavailable to watch and when I try to record a series it says technical issues I need some advice on how I can fix it
Can u tell me how to get or buy the sky Q box
I'd love to know why u have access to this product still in the box? Unless u work for sky?????
John Devlin self installation probably
Does the Sky Q come included with the mini or would I have to buy it seperate?
WhiteHole - Media one comes with but any additional one needs to be payed for
Can you please review Sky Q?
If it helps, here's my review for Home Cinema Choice mag: www.homecinemachoice.com/news/article/sky-q-silver-review/23807/
I have read that article and it is good but would prefer a video.
also makes your old boxes unuseable as needs a new LNB for H signal down one cable and V signal down the other
Hi , so it's 2 high quality coax cables from the LNB..does the Astra Satellite send out the signal like sky but moves the freq to get 4 signals on or does the LNB do the splitting and frequency moving(like a Stacker/destaker then sends down 2 cables ...i hope that makes sense..sorry if it doesn't
The wideband LNB used by Sky Q routes the entire satellite feed down to the box, which does the channel splitting. That's why a Sky Q LNB can';t be used with a classic Sky+ box.
Thanks for your quick reply , if the box does the splitting would you not need 4 feeds from the dish like how a multiswitch works or does the box work like a multiswitch inside and split to 4x4 bands..
Just two. All horizontal frequencies come down one cable and all vertical frequences come down the other. The box does the rest.
Thank you
The sky q mini didn’t come with a HDMI cable
Can the sky q mini box record programmes too? Or can it only stream recordings that were recorded on the sky q 2tb box?
Yes, you can make recordings from the Sky Mini. These recordings are made on the Sky Q box, as a Mini has no local storage. You can basically do everything you can do sitting in front of your Q box, when in front of a Mini. Hope that helps.
Thanks a lot mate, mine has been running for a while with zero problems
are the twin aerial cables the same for sky q as they are for sky hd?
Yes, only the LNB is different. Your existing twin coax cables remain unchanged.
Excellent thanks for that..they gave me an offer but my existing cables are under the floor.and I didn't want more cables coming in from the dish...this may just sway me now
Hopefully. I didn't change my cables at all. They just changed the LNB on the dish. Good luck.
Thanx all the same
When I pause a programme in one room and try and restart it in another room it says I am not currently watching anything. What should I be doing
If you're watching a show on your Q box and then leave it to watch on a Mini, just go to My Q then (right) Continue and you'll see your programme. When you select it, it'll carry on where you left off.
Yes I know the process but its not working
I've not encountered that particular problem. A headscratcher. I'd restart the Q then the mini, check the two boxes are linked and that you can play your recordings remotely. If that's still not sorted it, check out the various Sky Forums for help.
It is buggy but shows great promise, receivers don't like it tho lol
Doubt youd know but why is the ethernet port covered? I was thinking of using ethernet for mine
Just how it ships. The Ethernet port is live and that's how my Silver Sky Q is connected to my network, using Powerline. The Minis need to connect to the Silver, either wired via a router, probably via a Switch, or over Wi-FI (which is obviously more convenient). Hope that helps.
+Steve May oh thats perfect thank you so much. So it will actually work if i connected the silver and the mini through ethernet to my router?
I can't see why not. My Minis link wirelessly to the Silver.
+Steve May same,I didn't use an Ethernet cable I just used Wps button
When u get this box you don't own it like the rest of them you are renting it from Sky if u cancel you sub you have to return the box , they have changed the dish so you can't use any other satellite box and they expect people to pay 100 Euro a month for replete TV, it's a lot cheaper to go get a zgemma H2s and use the FTA or(this is 100% illegal) get a sky ''gift'' from an eBay seller and you get every Sky channel for 50 Euro a year
can you use the touch remote with sky q mini
No, only the IR remote...
Sky+hd newo softvear instal infomation plz lm in pakistan
I don't like the idea that your only allowed one Sky Q Silver box per household, which don't suit my setup as I have 3 Sky HD boxes & 2 sky links coming of two of the boxes, so I have 5 rooms with sky, but that's not the only issue with the new box! Anything anyone wants to record in the house all goes on the one box, that's rubbish between three members in my house sky Q will be full in a couple of weeks, so I'm going to have to skip it😢
+b4chch4n I think Sky wants to shift people more from timeshifting to streaming. So Sky Classic (just made that up) may still be the best option for some…
And I packed them in my job lol
Sky q sounds bit like IQ maybe implying it is smart? just an idea
Launch sky service in India including sky sports channels and sky mobile 5G SIM
Cant use my dvd recorder with it🙄🙄🙄
Why would you want to?
Sky rip off they wanted £199 for sky engineer to come and change the LNB on the dish and to plug in the new sky q box. The sky q box is loaned to me i will have to return it so why pay £199. If it gets damaged or gets stolen you are liable for any charges.
I no
