I can see how most people who watch this for the first time wouldn’t be blown away by it. It’s a movie that can grow on you. The seance scene was amazing and at the time was one of the first. Many movies steal from that still today.

  • @gavinyoung7085

Love this movie. Haunted house/possession movies are my favorites and for me this is right up there with Amityville Horror and Poltergeist and even The Exorcist.
The seance scene in this is one of the best. How he hears the voice on tape after the fact, which has since been ripped off numerous times.
My friend and me took the day off school way back in the late 80's and watched this. The bit where he throws the ball off the bridge, then goes home and the same ball bounces down the stairs again but covered in water. My friend screamed, and then I screamed too.
Just a great classic haunting movie. Love it

Hey Ken, always really like this one. It was pretty scary the first time I saw it but I was like 15. I got mine last night from Diabolik and I watched it. I really enjoyed it haven’t seen it in at least 15 years. Watch some of the special features surprised to find out, it’s pretty much based on a true story, which makes it even a little creepier really can’t argue with you 4 out of 5 but the look of the film and George C Scott make it that much better. The 4K scan was done from the inter-positive and not the original negative. I thought there was some issues with the scan but the parts that looked great definitely look great and the parts that didn’t well they didn’t. also, about the opening credits, they’re placed over the film so you’re actually seeing two layers of grain that’s why the credit scenes are usually Granier sometimes they use stock footage, which is usually very grainy as well. So never judge a book by its cover, and never judge a movie by its opening credits😅 have a great one

@@NYC_Goody don’t know exactly but I’m sure the original negative is too badly damaged or the other gentleman stated it’s lost if they had access to the inter-positive I’m sure they would’ve been granted access to the negative. that said, scanning from the inter-positive can produce incredible results for instance Apocalypse now was scanned from The inter-positive and that looks outstanding.

For me, this movie was a hidden gem. The first time I watched this was about 3 years ago. I don't know how it got past me for all those years as I'm a big George C. Scott fan. I know you tend to lean more toward gore/slasher horror, which I also enjoy but I prefer more thoughtful horror like The Changeling and The Shining.

I do not mind the film's pacing. It gives you time to take in the mystery of the house. It's a top ghost story film. I already have the excellent Second Sight Blu-ray release set that came out a few years ago and I will just keep that. It has a nice reversible foldout poster, that the 4K set doesn't, and prefer that over the photo cards. But if I didn't have it, this 4K box would be an easy buy.

Taste varies, obviously. For me, The Changeling is one of the very best haunted/supernatural films of all time. The underlying story is extremely clever, and the acting is what you expect when George C. Scott is in the cast. This film is still in my all-time horror top 10, and it tends to be revered among horror fans. Yes, I prefer it to The Shining, which, while technically excellent with an extremely underrated soundtrack (why the director gets all the credit for the creepiness is anyone’s guess), has all the humanity of the soles of Kubrick’s shoes. I also think The Changeling is superior to much-praised The Haunting (1963), a rather dull film IMO. In fact, I’ve since concluded I’m not much of a fan of haunting/supernatural films, except for The Changeling, which is a genre gem.

Damn I'm kind of kicking myself for buying the Severin release of this film last year. If I'd known this one was coming, I would've held off on buying the Severin 4K and just waited for this one. Severin just doesn't deliver the way Second Sight does, with packaging, restorations, etc.

Ken when you said second sight has better packaging even better than vinegar syndrome I think you're forgetting about the VSU line.
