Short Story 300 - The Unexpected Visitor (Int)
It was a Saturday evening in a small town in England. James sat in his living room, enjoying a cup of tea while watching his favourite detective show on television. The sun was setting, and the sky turned a beautiful shade of orange. Suddenly, there was a loud knock at the door.
James frowned. He wasn't expecting anyone. He put down his tea, stood up, and walked slowly to the door. When he opened it, he was surprised to see a young woman standing there. She had long brown hair and a worried look on her face.
“Hello,” she said softly. “I’m sorry to disturb you. My name is Lucy, and I live down the street. My cat went missing, and I noticed your garden is really nice. I thought maybe…” her voice trailed off.
James felt a wave of sympathy. “Oh no, I’m sorry to hear that. What does your cat look like?” he asked.
“She’s a small, grey kitten with bright green eyes,” Lucy explained, her eyes searching James’s for hope. “Her name is Bella. She loves to climb trees and explore gardens. I thought she might have come here.”
James decided to help her. “Let’s go and have a look around,” he suggested. Lucy smiled gratefully, and they walked into the garden together.
They searched behind the bushes and under the garden furniture, calling Bella's name. “Bella! Bella! Where are you?” Lucy called out. But there was no answer.
After searching for a while, James suggested, “Maybe she went into one of the neighbouring gardens. Let’s check next door.”
They knocked on the door, but no one answered. Lucy became more anxious. “What if she’s lost? I can’t bear the thought of her being scared!”
James tried to comfort her. “Don’t worry, we’ll find her. Let’s keep looking,” he encouraged. They walked from house to house, checking back gardens and asking neighbours if they had seen Bella.
After an hour of searching, they found themselves in front of the last house on their street. The garden was overgrown, and the fence was tall. “I don’t think we can see anything from here,” Lucy said disappointedly.
James noticed a small gap at the bottom of the fence. “Wait! If we crawl under, we might be able to find her!” he suggested.
Lucy hesitated. “Are you sure?” she asked, a little nervous.
“Why not? It could be our last chance,” he replied with a smile.
They crawled under the fence and entered the garden. It was quiet, and the air was filled with the sound of birds singing. They started looking around, searching behind large bushes and under an old tree.
Suddenly, Lucy heard a faint meow. “Did you hear that?” she asked, her eyes wide with excitement.
“Yes! It came from over there!” James pointed towards the old shed in the corner of the garden. They approached the shed slowly, and Lucy called out again, “Bella! Here, Bella!”
They both listened carefully, and the meow sounded again. Lucy opened the shed door, and to her surprise, there was Bella, sitting on a pile of old blankets. Lucy’s face lit up, and she called out, “Bella!” The kitten looked at her, and with a joyful leap, ran towards Lucy.
Lucy picked up her cat and hugged her tight. “Oh, Bella! I was so worried!” she exclaimed.
James smiled at the scene. “I’m glad we found her,” he said.
Lucy looked at James and said, “Thank you so much for your help. I couldn’t have done this alone.”
James felt happy to have helped. “Anytime,” he replied.
After this adventure, Lucy and James became good friends. They often met for tea in the garden, talking and laughing about their unexpected day together....
