The problem with this song is just that it never really resolves. It builds up tension but that's it. The chorus happens but there's no catharsis. It's the song inhaling and never exhaling

Hyperpop was this generations Nu Metal, it ran it's course in 5 years, it had like 7 noteworthy artists, the artists that weren't those 7 where just a shity copy of their style, it was full irony, it had horrendous lyrics for the most part, and it mostly appealed to a teenage demographic.

In a similar way that artists deflect the hyperpop title, many numetal acts barely even identify as numetal. It seems more of an era or style than a genre. There is incredible music in both those categories, but not a large percentage imo.

as a former member of the hyperpop community, the label "hyperpop" has been a cancer to the community. now smaller artists in the scene who make "hyperpop" aren't making what people have come to know as hyperpop. folks simply try to make a song purely inspired by established hyperpop artists and not the artists that inspired the established artists. they don't even bother to pay respect to the old heads that pioneered the genres these folks are mashing up. they don't understand what it is that made this genre stand out in the first place and are just trying to replicate the success of artists like 100 Gecs or SOPHIE.
no hate to the folks who do this, but they gotta understand the damage they are doing to the identity of the genre. hyperpop is meant to be experimental, not stagnant from ruminating on past releases from your favorite artist as a means to replicate them. hyperpop has to evolve in order to continue being hyperpop and not just being pop. no hate to pop too. y'all get the point, I hope.
I don’t get the point and I’ve heard so many people make that point with other genres. I want to know how you think a genre can be damaged. To me, a genre is an arbitrary label; arbitrary because an artist will always have fans if they keep releasing good music. If the music is bad, how could it “damage” the genre when people can listen to whatever they want? Especially the ones who are fans of said genre.

@@ImmortalNinja33 im not about gatekeeping. don’t get me wrong. a lot of these folks in the scene are younger and don’t really have their voice yet. a lot of them kinda copy instead of understanding how their music functions or even taking their own influences from different places.
what i meant by the take of not respecting the old heads, i meant that people are copying stuff from 100 gecs and aren’t understanding how their work is almost a pastiche while expanding upon the art it’s referential to in original ways. all they have understanding of is the pastiche without knowledge of what it’s paying homage to. if you’re going to copy the genre-bending hyperpop stuff, at least know what the genres are. if you don’t wanna listen to all that shit, that’s also hella cool and rad. but then maybe mashup the influence you get from those artists instead of mimicking their success.
obviously hyperpop is not monolithic and 100 gecs are not representative of the sound of hyperpop as a whole. neither are smaller hyperpop artists. i’m talking about the folks i specifically think got hyperpop into it’s pop-grunge phase and got people confused as to what hyperpop even is. the folks who i think caused the most harm to the genre.

@@ImmortalNinja33 oh, i wasn’t necessarily talking about this song, but i do think this song is like a sanitized version of hyperpop. i’m not against more mainstream pop style hyperpop, but i didn’t like the song. i didn’t hate the song though. i thought the bridge was really weirdly bad and kinda outta key and the verses were mid with the carti verse being the worst. the repetitive “i love it” hook i actually thought went crazy and was the best part of the track. i’m still hopeful for this record. im hoping this is a lowlight of the record.
and about the copying other artists stuff, don’t sweat it too much. you’ll find your voice. i’d still even consider myself a young artist. i just have experience because i’ve been in the industry for a long time. i dealt with that stuff too, but don’t stop yourself from experimenting just because you’re afraid it sounds too similar to something else. see where it goes and if it sounds too similar, just get some advice from friends. see if other people can hear that it’s too similar. if it’s too similar, just shelve it and dive into more music and try to get more influences. our creativity is really kinda just an amalgamation of our favorite parts of our influences. a wise man once said “yoink and twist”. if you figure out the yoink part, you can start working on how to twist it into something original. that’s half the battle already done.
but yeah, i also love a lot of the bands that were considered grunge as well. when i’m talking about pop-grunge im talking about the late 90’s to early 00’s bands from after the nirvana craze. every record label wanted to sign the next nirvana. people weren’t paying attention to kurt’s influences at that point, they weren’t looking at how kurt combined his influences and figuring out how they could apply that to their own style. they just copied someone else’s style with a vague understanding of it.

It's so sad. I love hyperpop and I was hoping that it was going to be the next big thing since it was one of the few semi-mainstream genres looking forward in an industry that's going retro. I thought it stood a chance since so many people said we were about to have a bunch of session pop, but the more I thought about it, a lot of hyper pop is just people talking about being maidenless over a 1000 beats per minute track. I get why people don't want to hear that.
I appreciate what Camilla was trying to do, but like Fantano said, she did not have respect for the genre.
