And there were always the occasional comic of movie scenes or tv scenes but generally in the comics the writer and artist would try and do things slightly different to add more context or maybe a slight pre or post additional scene. This is just the show and a bed reduction of it. There is no reason to get this comic and watch the show choose one you don’t need the other.

    Salvador Larroca had his drawns in some comics from the main Star Wars line of Marvel Comics in 2016 and 2017, until in 2018 all the comics from chapter 26 to 55 were given to him to be drawn... his art is HORRIBLE. I remember being excited to read some new chapter of Star Wars that had come out, imagining what adventure would be told in those pages, and then being super discouraged and sad to see that that story had been drawn by Salvador. His design is TERRIBLE, he tries to draw the characters in a realistic way, to make them look like the real actors and real people, but the way he executes it is horrible. The realistic way he draws the characters is strange, Han solo numerous times had his face swollen as if he had been attacked by a swarm of bees, making him look like anything but Harrison Ford. And to make matters worse, the color also helped to make it look bad. Several times the characters' eyes had the same color as their SKIN, with you not knowing how to differentiate between skin and eyes. This guy's bizarre way of drawing ended up completely ruining the story, even if the plot was good. I remember being very anxious and excited to read the Citadel of Screams arc, only to discover that 2 of the 5 chapters in that arc were drawing by him. The Citadel of Screams has a very good story, but this guy's bizarre art simply ruins it and makes everything ugly. And one of the things that bothered me the most is the fact that none of the ships, I repeat, none of the ships were designed by him, ALL OF THEM without exception were 3D models that he just fixed the angle and threw onto the panel. All the backgrounds were also just scanned and thrown in there. Vader's first phase of comics (2015 to 2016) was completely drawn by him, which made it not so good, but I was happy to see that he had only drawn a few comics from the main Star Wars line... Until 2018 when Marvel simply decided to hand over ALL THE CHAPTERS TO HIM. That pissed me off, but luckily he improved a lot at that time, and his drawns became acceptable. He began to draw the characters in a more consistent way, the ships and backgrounds were no longer 3D and scanned scenes, and the colors were also well placed and executed. Still, if i am reading a comic, i *want* to look like a comic, i want the characters to have a cartoonish visual, i want the ships to have a comic style, goddammit, I want a comic to be a comic, I want it to be drawn and have a cartoon look, not a realistic scaneed shit with 3d models. The first 6 chapters of the main Star Wars line, designed by John Cassaday, also tried to look like the real actors, but they were DESIGNED, not scanned or made to be realistic.Thank God the art for the last arc, Destination Hoth, was not his, but rather Phil Noto's, a great illustrator who had already worked on Poe Dameron's comics. I thought that after 2018 Larroca's performance would improve, but apparently it just declined more and more.
    Sorry for the big text, but i really HATE Salvador Larroca's desing.

    • @a_fine_edition2746
      @a_fine_edition2746 5 месяцев назад +6

      Going over his initial Vader run in my head, I can literally only imagine how much better it would have been with a more talented artist. This was how we got introduced to Doctor Aphra, Triple Zero, and Beetee-One. Some style would’ve been incredible, especially when his action scenes are pretty sterile and stiff. Seriously, compare his work on the Vader Down crossover to whoever was doing the mainline Star Wars comics at the time. Vader looks INSANE in the other style, because it’s actually got STYLE. And you can still tell who everybody is perfectly fine. Props to the guy who gave us the “all I am surrounded by is fear… and dead men” moment, because the art is phenomenal. But then you jump back to Larroca, and it’s really jarring when he tries to have characters fight. There’s no sense of motion besides some little lines.

      @theShoop 5 месяцев назад +7

      No, he doesn't. Sure, Rob is infamous, but you can't say he doesn't know how to draw. He's lacking in anatomy, but he makes it up with dynamic poses, good epic shading, recognizable style and overall interesting characters. Besides, it was a different time, when he started publishing. You couldn't just press Alt-Z, move bad parts a bit to fix a composition, use smudge tool, etc. and etc. Traditional drawing is a lot harder than digital and Liefeld did his best at it. That's precisely why he's still in the industry.

    I said it since 2015. For the exception of few short miniseries the new MARVEL comics are a total hack job with STAR WARS slapped over it. I gave up on it a long time ago. Dark Horse celebrated diverse art directions pushing the limits of what a comic book is. This is lazy job to make extra buck off the IP

    I'm not as familiar with Marvel's OT run, but Dark Horse's run on the Prequels is at least as good as their Republic line (what Filoni's Clone Wars show was created to copy and then replace). Revenge of the Sith is clearly rushed (the duel between Grievous and Obi-Wan, for instance, has significantly different dialogue and is only two pages), but Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones look fantastic, and there's no tracing evident anywhere.

      I've been talking a lot to people about why Larroca still gets gigs even after fans reaction to his Vader and Star Wars comics, and we think it's just that he is fast and cheap. So when you are producing something like this Kenobi comic, which really is just a cashgrab adaptation of a show that's not that popular in the first place, you hire someone cheap to maximize profits.
      Now why Larroca as an artist is fine with being associated with comics like this? it's probably not a bad way to pay the bills.

    Believe it or not, this isn't the only time Disney did this sort of shot-by-shot retelling of something we already saw on screen. I personally have a copy of The 40th Anniversary A New Hope Cinestory Comic that does the exact same thing, except it LITERALLY is copy-and-pasting shots from A New Hope (Not just someone tracing screenshots from the film into comic book form; but ACTUALLY takes shots from the film itself, and puts those shots directly into the book), while adding speech bubbles, and onomanapeias (Hope I'm spelling that correctly) here-and-there. Yes, this exists! And it happened for A New Hope's 40th Anniversary, aka 2017, which was a full 7 years ago, back when The Last Jedi Premiered in Theaters! They've been doing this for a long time.

The next step after this crap is to go all-AI art for a comic so they don't have to pay an artist (or only have to pay for the speech bubbles & other text, if the AI can't handle that well enough), but that depends on what laws or regulations get passed in the mean time.

    the sad thing is, a competent artist can use "tracing" (ie finding your basic forms and compositional shapes) and still bring style and expressiveness to a drawing. Or at least develop a system for interpreting the source images with where you make marks on someone's face to define them. but this is just sad to look at.
    In the times where you cant quite find a frame that matches perfectly its entirely possible that the original artist traced only the faces (and maybe hands, the difficult stuff) and then hand drew their bodies which is why they don't match 1:1

    The most irritating thing for me is that these comic adaptations are wholly unnecessary. Why do we need an entire retelling of Mando? Or the Obi-Wan show? Hell, they just announced an Ahsoka adaptation is coming (at least the cover actually looks great, but I’m not optimistic). My question is who are these for? Just… watch the shows, if you really want to see the story. These comics are literally slapping weird out-of-place shots onto a page from the same series you can already watch. There’s literally less to engage with. I guess some people might see that as a blessing though, depending on how much they dislike something, but at that point why bother engaging with it at all? What’s the point of sinking so much wasted time and effort into churning these adaptations out, instead of dedicating it to working on something original for the Star Wars comic medium?

Would you wait around to find out if it's just a necklace, or if it's sex and a necklace, or if, worst of all, it's a necklace and love? Would you stay, knowing life would always be a little bit worse? Or would you cut and run?
    Harry: Oh, God. I am so in the wrong. The classic fool!
    Karen: [voice breaking] Yes, but you've also made a fool out of me, and you've made the life I lead foolish, too!

    Major comic book artists that work for the big US comic book companies don't need to be talented artists nowadays. Nowadays, how the person identifies and their politics are far more important for those companies than the ability to create art. That's why many talented artist become independent and many people around the world are abandoning places like Marvel and DC, and are turning to things like manga. In 2020-2021, the entire US comic book industry was outsold by a single manga series, Kimetsu no Yaiba (aka "Demon Slayer").

    Kinda fitting that the comic for kenobi is phoned in considering how bad the show was, I can’t judge the acting as I have only seen like 3 clips, if I’ve seen more than 15 minutes ied be extremely surprised but as I knew I wouldn’t enjoy and would likely spend most of my time complaining to myself I chose not to actually watch it thou one of the clips I saw was Vader going ape on the ship then toying with his victim to show just how wide the gap in skill and power was between them (we so need a GOOD! Vader film with a great director and a fantastic script… I know but I can dream) the limited amount I’ve seen really wasn’t enough to judge the acting on but the rest of the show is a wide open target and oh boy was that a mess but that’s all been said before.
