+Super Mushroom Soup Yes..everyone that started watching in 2016 I've seen this guy at least 10 times before in videos and heard his voice at least 50..
+Alex G my ~1000$ machine can run every game at high-ultra 60fps, I would personally call that high end. But I guess mid end and high end is subjective
I have a MSi GE62 2QF, love the frickin thing to bits. It's not the most powerful laptop out there but the price and portability made it worth it and glad even Hardware Canucks pointed that out with the GT72s.
Really like the little touches on the video like the smooth transition between the background tracks and the animations are lovely. While you did an excellent job on the review, I find that those products have a pretty hefty price tag. ~3K USD.. That means it even pricier when it comes to Canada! Seeing these product is nice but also depressing at the same time when you're still a student and working your ass up to pay for textbooks and tution fee.
I just want to point out that Origin and Eurocom are not using the chassy from SAGER. Sager is one of the reseller like Origin and Eurocom. Sager, Origin, and Eurocom are all using the chassy from "CLEVO". Also, I would like to go with Eurocom or Origin PC, because they are known for easy upgrade, and future proof components.
I have an Alienware M17x from 2009, and only this year I realized that it's getting a little slow in newer games. Solid as a rock, best money I've ever spent.
I need to make a correction. They are using a "Clevo" chassis, not a "Sager" chassis. Clevo is the ODM. While Sager may be the middleman reseller of Clevo barebones kits for the US, they do not have a hand in its construction at all. Other places all over the world use the Clevo barebones (like XMG in europe/UK and Metabox/Venom computing in AUS, etc) I just wanted to clear that up.
+Leo chen I'm glad I waited. I was about to get a Sager NP9870-S for my HS graduation, but I'm waiting for a 1080/1080M-powered beast to come to market.
Great video! I would love another video like this, but with the thinner and lighter gaming laptops like the Razer Blade, ASUS ROG GL502, MSI GS60 Ghost Pro.
I larger selection of different models I think would have been better since the ultra high end enthusiast laptop area has definitely gotten a lot more interesting in the last year. Here you basically have only have 2 different models with just 2 different configuration for the Clevo which is good as the 980m sli cannot be left out of we're talking about ultra high end. Still a Clevo P775DM, MSI GT80s, and Asus 752VY would really have completed the round up of Ultra high end laptops out right now with the full gtx980 (Except for the Asus). I would really like to see a follow up on this in the future as more brands plan to join the this market like Acer, Lenovo and EVGA. Edit: Great video, I always love the production level from you guys
I think you should also considered the Alienware 17 R3, its pretty ULTRA HIGH END as well. but anyways good job guys, and hopefully an Alienware would be featured on your channel sometime soon
Wait what the hell? A DVD drive should be used for many years to come. Instead of waiting hours for a game to download, you can just put CDs in and it will take about 10 minutes. You can also watch movies on your notebook as well as burn disks. What do you mean shouldn't be used?
Plus, you can see it as future-proofing: If and when ISPs start implementing bandwidth caps in earnest (which they're already starting to do, particularly cable company ISPs who want to cripple Netflix), optical media will be all the rage again. (A dark future, to be sure, but a likely one, given the incentive structure of the market.)
Nicholas James why would you want an external one when you can have internal? It is literally more inconvenient when an internal drive does nothing to inconvenience you.
Probably buying MSI GT72S and selling my older gaming laptop from MSI also - definitely the winner in this contest. Still waiting for Black Friday deals & upgrade for 1080M edition.
I was actually looking to purchase one of the Clevo P870DM-G (Either the Origin one or the Sager NP9870 from XOTIC) because I wanted power and desktop abilities to be able to produce music and videos on the go and never looked at any laptops that didn't have a 6700k (other than the Alienware). But then I realized something like that is hell to carry and battery is not strong enough for University/College so I'm deciding on getting a cheaper laptop that has good battery life and enough power to do what I want for like $1000 - $2000 and a full out gaming desktop for the rest of my budget (which would still be quite a bit and will get me a super decent PC) Another option I'm more likely to go with is to go for something like a Dell XPS 15 or Razer Blade 14 because it's portable, lasts long and is powerful enough (but will suck my wallet dry)
The reason that makes the msi last longer in battery test is not CPU but i-GPU. Due to some reason, the i-GPU in the dual GPU laptop is factory disabled. I own a CLEVO P377SM-A which is the older version of the dual GPU laptop tested here and I know that being the reason.
Just purchased myself a MSI GT72S, traded in the Asus G752 for it and couldn't be happier! The Asus definitely has some flaws in the design, including the very sharp base edge at the bottom of the keyboard, it was incredibly uncomfortable. PLus the MSI comes with the MXM GTX 980M which is up-gradable! Can't wait to overclock this bad boy to see it's full potential.. Thanks for the review HC~!
Current line up for those who watch this video and still think these laptops are the best: GTX 1060 GPU on laptops: 1300$-1500$ GTX 1070 GPU on laptops: 1700$-2000$ GTX 1080 GPU on laptops: 2200$-2500$ These laptops, no matter what their brand is, will shatter what you see in this video and will be on par with actual gaming rigs!
I'd personally get the MSI GT72S since it's not as expensive as the others and has somewhat better aesthetics. Plus, its keyboard seems to have the upper hand compared to the other two.
+acnfanmanin Msi should be able to but they sound like freight trains. Personally if you want to OC i would recommend an Asus G752 series due to the vapor cooling and superior cooling system overall. I have g751jy that i can overclock and still run around75 to 79C at full load hours in. Really quiet as well.
Granted Desktops will ALWAYS be more OC friendly. But for people like myself who spend more time at work and out than i do at home a desktop just isn't viable enough at the moment. My Rog is so quiet it will surprise you when you get behind it and feel the heat venting out the back. But just for a reference my Rog is running Doom on Ultra with 0 OC at a stable 60 fps and heat never gets up above 79 even hours in. I only have the 751 and from what i understand they did improve the 752's in that area. But I'm not fanboying. MSI's are great machines as well but they are definitely louder than i would like personally at full load.
+Fatih Özcelik Not exactly true. Intel 750 Series drives are generally faster than the 950 Pro in most tests. The Toshiba drive often outperforms the 950 Pro as well. However, Toshiba XG3 SSD's are OEM parts and buying them separately is pretty much next to impossible for now. Maybe (and hopefully) in the future though.
with the release of the gtx 1080, I think it is best to wait for a gtx 1080m before diving in. aleinware 15 claims 6 hours of battery, so if that where to get a 1080m (rumored to be as fast as a desktop 980ti) than it would be great option for portable fast gaming laptop (and you can attach fast external graphics)
The MSI makes the most sense.. im rather disappointed in the lack of improvement going to those other two options considering the large price increase, you could buy 2.5 of the MSI for the cost of the Eurocom.. SLI doesnt seem to benefit most titles very much at 1080p due to CPU and game engine limitations, and SLI 980Ms still cant seem to chug out 4k to feed that screen. That said, I like the 4k screen for its enhanced gamut support; Given if and when I replace my Alienware M17x R4 it would likely serve the function as a mobile photo editing workstation as well as occasional gaming machine, the screen would be very nice (Its probubly my largest complaint on the machine, the TN panel has atrocious color accuracy and viewing angles meaning about all it does well IS play games) I really dont want something with a hobbled processor (like most "ultra" books) and I find working on anything smaller than a 17" difficult. Which leaves me in gaming notebooks...
75hz? Is it that difficult to get 120+ in a laptop with all these high end parts being put in? Ever since I've gotten my 144hz monitor everything 60-100hz seems like I'm playing in slow motion.
Why are you saying the Origin has 16GB RAM as though that's the max you can get? I know it's configurable up to 64GB. And what about the m.2 drive options? You didn't mention those... And you can get it with 2 GTX 980m cards in SLI like the Eurocom. Also the Origin has a 4K screen option too and I'm pretty sure all this was available when this video was made so why didn't you show that laptop at it's best like you did for the others?
I never realized how GTX 800Mseries are so behind and they still use Kelper Architecture. I have GTX860m and I guarantee you that they can't play in ultra in watch dog 2. And they are slower than GTX760. Now you can buy this but you can also buy a 1060 laptop for entry level gaming too
With these gaming notebooks, how good is the thermal paste? is it applied correctly in these new models? My cousin had an alienware (m14, i think), temps were in the 70ºc, cleaned for dust and just a couple degrees of difference. Then changed thermal paste for mx4, and temps dropped to 56ºc load. Sorry for the bad english, not my native language.
like in MSI laptop where you can switch between integrated GPU and gtx card, is the same functionality available with eurocom and origin? and by doing so how much will the battery life be affected?
These laptops are behemoths. They're way too large and borderline impractical for those looking for portability. As a college student that is consistently travelling yet desires to game without sacrifices, the Razer Blade is near perfection; it's what I'm using right now. However, it is pricey but it is a price I gladly payed. I love this thing so much!
Thats what I had before, a mac and a gaming tower. Once my tower got outdated I sold that and my mac and got a Razer Blade. Problem with that set up is that I couldnt game in my college apt. nor in my home town since I didnt want to take a gaming tower + accessories back and forth
Will the origin eon 17x (and not 17slx) run on a single brick ac power adapter having 330 watt power ? I want to purchase among eon 17x and 17slx but the one which consumes less power. Will both of them consume the same power ?
although they have similar performances, while MSI seems to be 2-3% lower in comparison of similar GPUs, when you have the laptop excluding graphics performance these 3 topics: keyboard, acoustic and temperature become the main issues. Personally, I dont mind reducing graphics quality by 2-3% (not FPS but detail) but these 3 components are really important to enjoy the laptop experience comfortably. thx for the video and eurocom was a great help for me to look for notebook parts prices. If you have other alternative web sites can you recommend me some. Thx
Hi everyone! I'm shifting to PC gaming now and I've got a budget of max 2k USD...which laptop would be rock solid for gaming and would never become obsolete for at least 4 years? Thanks
+James Potter It is a One Plus X. Looks good right? One Plus is a new mobile phone company in China. I'm pretty sure they took the elements of iPhone 4/5 and put it together with modern thinner design. The phone is quite outdated now, using a Qualcomm snapdragon 801. I'm shocked that the products of One Plus is much more popular abroad than in our homeland. I guess that it is because there are dozens of choice in the Chinese market. The spec you can get from a Chinese branded smart phone for its price is mind blowing, you can easily buy a 5.5 inch 1080p Android phone with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of memory under $200(taxed, non-contract) here in China. Moreover, fancy features like fingerprints unlocking and multi sim card support are standard for those phones.
+Alex Z seriously? That's awesome! That's the best design I've ever seen for a phone. I may try to get it, but as much as I don't like android, it sounds extremely appealing for that price. Those specs are good enough for me, especially when compared to the price. Thanks for the info
Hey so I picked up an Alienware 15 - i7,16GB RAM, 512 SSD, and gtx 980m for $900. Should I sell it and wait for the new models with the 1080m or just keep it? I don't care much about 4k gaming as 1080p is cool for me. I'm just worried that it won't keep up with future games as the card is about 2 years old now.
If you are not planning to play games on 4K resolution, GTX 980 will be a sufficient card. Although it may suffer in DirectX 12 Games for now. May be that could be fixed by software update or not. But if you want uncompromised performance GTX 1080 updated laptop is the way to go. But still on GTX1080 with 4K resolution, the frame rates are pretty respectable ( For desktop OverClocked version and for founders card version on some games) about 45-65 FPS. Plus there will soon be external graphics card dock available soon, for alienware in particular. Which have the sole purpose to provide amazing performance through desktop GPUs, as you may know laptop GPUs tend to lack in computing power. You just have to Buy the dock plus the GTX 1080 card and you can pretty much assemble them on your own, and then connect to your laptop via thunderbolt 3 connector. So its up to you if you want mobile gaming everywhere with GTX 1080 then you should definitely upgrade your laptop. Or if you can settle with GTX 980 for mobile use and GTX 1080 docked desktop GPU power for gaming at home. In that case, buy the dock and the card.
Acer is garbage, and the Asus g752 has the same specifications as the Msi as well so it's probably a toss up between performance. The Asus gx700 on the other hand is an abomination that isn't a laptop or a desktop either
Bonecrusher Acer laptops so far are still in the garbage tier, although they are slowly getting there. Eurocom is just a different name for a sager/clevo etc which themselves are fantastic
+Alex G Asus takes the cake on cooling on the Gseries. Its insane at how cool and quiet the rog's run. If cooling and low volume even at full load hours in, then id always recommend the asus over msi.
I think the MSI GT72 lineup has stolen me.. They look fantastic, perform fantastic, and in Australia have pretty competitive pricing atleast compared to what I've seen in stores. My dream Laptop would probably be a black GT72 with the 6820HK, 32GB RAM, a 256GB SSD and a 1TB HDD with a 980M or a 980 though I'd wait for Pascal to come to mobile. On 16nm I expect to see some huge gains with the increased efficiency
+Exiled Storm Id say check out the Asus line as well. Same power. Better cooling if OC is your thing. They are neck and neck but for me cooling always is important in a laptop.
+scott greer I have and I'm not really interested, I've had a bad experience with asus overall and overclocking on a laptop doesn't really interest me much anyway
I have a gt72, and this review on the gt72's part seemed completely accurate, apart from where he forgot to mention the built in trackpad is absolute garbage, everything else feels top notch
can someone give me a reason (or maybe a few) as to why someone would want such a high performance mobile notebook when it's half the price to build a better performing desktop?
Someone who travels a lot and needs a powerful laptop for work. Maybe someone like an archeologist who is always on the move but needs a powerful computer to run 3D models or something (I don't know what archeologists do). Also someone like a RUclipsr who needs to edit video on the go and needs the graphics cards to edit 4K or something. Linus (imo like the God of tech RUclipsrs) uses a gaming laptop as his daily driver.
The odd thing is with gaming laptops, if you were judging them on modern standards that you judge laptops for weight size mobility, they'd score very low and wouldn't want one in my lap
Apologies for the re-upload! Little audio mistake, but that's now fixed :D
+HardwareCanucks I was confused already xD
nice Video
+AGamingPanda me too
From where do you have so much money ? (for laptops) O.o
+Lucas Robin i think they got sponsered. By the manufactures.
I grabbed a MSI GT683 5 years ago and only just sold it a few months ago. MSI gaming laptops hold up and are easily upgrade-able. I love em!
This kind of deep looking tests is what even LinusTechTips or anybody don't doing. But you do it, and that is so great and intresting to watch!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it :)
yes box!
+Negnav123 Linus does perform detailed tests on most hardware including gaming laptops. I don't see anything missing there.
Negnav123 grammar? Where it at tho
Waaaaaaaaait, who is this guy?
- Everyone, 2016
+Super Mushroom Soup Yes..everyone that started watching in 2016
I've seen this guy at least 10 times before in videos and heard his voice at least 50..
+Captain Leerox at least :)
Thumbs up for the grading in this one!
I don't know what it is about this channel, but the videos always raise my mood. Thanks @HardwareCanucks for the great content!
1500-1700 is midrange. Bruhhh
I feel their standards have shifted too much, 1k is mid tier and 1500-1700 is high end, 2k+ is just insanity for the 1% that can afford it
+Alex G my ~1000$ machine can run every game at high-ultra 60fps, I would personally call that high end.
But I guess mid end and high end is subjective
Christopher Bjørkeng True that
+Christopher Bjørkeng On a laptop? What FPS are you getting, and under what resolution?

dammit too bad my 240p screen cant show all the crispiness from the video :(

did you go Bách in time?
240p? myt b cuz ur internet connection's slow..

My msi gaming laptop is 4 years old now and still going strong :)
I have an Alienware M17x from 2009, and only this year I realized that it's getting a little slow in newer games. Solid as a rock, best money I've ever spent.
Damn, HardwareCanucks changed since the last time I've watched his videos.

I just wanted to clear that up.
Still not good because they're old gen. The new gen of GPUs will be so power efficient that they can actually make a good gaming laptop a reality.
Gtx 1080m
+Leo chen I'm glad I waited. I was about to get a Sager NP9870-S for my HS graduation, but I'm waiting for a 1080/1080M-powered beast to come to market.
1080 and 1070 actually draw more power than 900 series
Nvidia announced there wouldn't be a 1080m, just the desktop version
Martheyu Yu That is correct. Just an underclocked 1080 for laptops
Did he say the Eurocom trumps all corners? Is that laptop building a wall to keep out all others?
+SwagSubscriber the Eurocom trumps all corners, but the MSI donalds the other two, portability wise.
Great video! I would love another video like this, but with the thinner and lighter gaming laptops like the Razer Blade, ASUS ROG GL502, MSI GS60 Ghost Pro.

watching this on 6 years old laptop :(
great vid.. not that im in the target market bracket for any of these items
My top gaming laptop would be the System76 Oryx Pro, but I'm a Linux nerd and compatibility is important to me. Out of these three? The MSI for sure.
i wish they built them as Lenovo does with their thinkPad series, robust and boxy, but beastly inside; kind of like a sleeper.
Current line up for those who watch this video and still think these laptops are the best:

You could also buy a Razerblade 14 and connect a GTX 1080 to it with the external graphics connector
8:43 It sounds exactly like what I'm hearing coming from my own laptop at this moment. LOL no shit.
Eurocom and Origin PC are the same model (P870DM) built by CLEVO in Taiwan.

Is there really a market for that GAMER RED AND BLACK SO COOL look? I see it and just can't believe the design made it out of R&D.
Eurocom also makes mobile supercomputers, that company is truly crazy.
How is he doing benchmarks with the msi laptop if it only has a 1080p screen resolution?
what is better for gaming a laptop with an i7 and an amd r5 m330 with hdd and 4 gb ram or a laptop with an i5 and a nvidia 940m with ssd and 8gb ram .
Can you do any videos on great budget gaming laptops from the price 500-1000? Especially when Polaris comes out?
The OEM is Clevo, Sager/Eurocom/Origin sells their laptops
You guys should do a comparison of Gaming laptops that use external GPUs aka Razer, MSI and Alienware
I find it surprising that they didn't include the MSI Titan S, the current one which has two Desktop 980 in sli.
Song @8:50 ?
Really Good review! Thx.
Can you do this same video but mid-low end instead of high end
75hz? Is it that difficult to get 120+ in a laptop with all these high end parts being put in? Ever since I've gotten my 144hz monitor everything 60-100hz seems like I'm playing in slow motion.
Eber is a cool kid!
I'm here waiting casually for the 1070m or 1080m
most likely be a year from now
Why are you saying the Origin has 16GB RAM as though that's the max you can get? I know it's configurable up to 64GB. And what about the m.2 drive options? You didn't mention those... And you can get it with 2 GTX 980m cards in SLI like the Eurocom. Also the Origin has a 4K screen option too and I'm pretty sure all this was available when this video was made so why didn't you show that laptop at it's best like you did for the others?
I never realized how GTX 800Mseries are so behind and they still use Kelper Architecture. I have GTX860m and I guarantee you that they can't play in ultra in watch dog 2. And they are slower than GTX760. Now you can buy this but you can also buy a 1060 laptop for entry level gaming too
why everyone these days gaming on a PC are hating the DVDs
your price ranges seem a little off because some laptops with 980m retail over 2000 and ones with 980 start at 3500
With these gaming notebooks, how good is the thermal paste? is it applied correctly in these new models?
My cousin had an alienware (m14, i think), temps were in the 70ºc, cleaned for dust and just a couple degrees of difference. Then changed thermal paste for mx4, and temps dropped to 56ºc load.
Sorry for the bad english, not my native language.
What is the middle wallpaper in the thumbnail? A link would be appreciated
like in MSI laptop where you can switch between integrated GPU and gtx card, is the same functionality available with eurocom and origin? and by doing so how much will the battery life be affected?
You know what all laptops have in common they either have jet engine fans or they get so hot they burn to the touch.
3:56 10lbs and 2 inches thick. Sold!
I think you should include the Asus GX900 instead of 2 identical models, heck they are basically the same other than aesthetics
You could get a mini ATX build with a full tower performance and enough to get a macbook pro.
Thats what I had before, a mac and a gaming tower. Once my tower got outdated I sold that and my mac and got a Razer Blade. Problem with that set up is that I couldnt game in my college apt. nor in my home town since I didnt want to take a gaming tower + accessories back and forth
They really aren't that big. Got a beefed up laptop for dorm gaming and a tablet for class notes. The only problem is upgradability.
Will the origin eon 17x (and not 17slx) run on a single brick ac power adapter having 330 watt power ? I want to purchase among eon 17x and 17slx but the one which consumes less power. Will both of them consume the same power ?
What's in second place?
although they have similar performances, while MSI seems to be 2-3% lower in comparison of similar GPUs, when you have the laptop excluding graphics performance these 3 topics: keyboard, acoustic and temperature become the main issues. Thx
MSI GT72 DRAGON has a gtx 980 with 8g of Ram. But I still not sure if I should wait for the gtx 1080m gpu?
I wish I had such laptops nice video though thumbs up
WHERE IS DIMITRI AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH HIM
+mike52787 Dmitry
+James H oh my
Laz0maz0 064 get rekt
+James H people like you made me lose faith in humanity
Laz0maz0 064 oh my....
I would pick the msi from the video but overall the sager that was featured in LTT
Hi everyone! I'm shifting to PC gaming now and I've got a budget of max 2k USD...which laptop would be rock solid for gaming and would never become obsolete for at least 4 years? Thanks
What phone is that at 1:17?
.
No its a Oneplus X
I hope that would help you buddy.
Make a Alienware 17r3 review with the graphics amplifier btw love the chanel
why no Acer or Asus but same laptop with two different brands?
Acer is garbage, and the Asus g752 has the same specifications as the Msi as well so it's probably a toss up between performance.
The Asus gx700 on the other hand is an abomination that isn't a laptop or a desktop either
Alex G Acer is garbage but Eurocom isn't?
Bonecrusher Acer laptops so far are still in the garbage tier, although they are slowly getting there. Eurocom is just a different name for a sager/clevo etc which themselves are fantastic
+Alex G Asus takes the cake on cooling on the Gseries. Its insane at how cool and quiet the rog's run. If cooling and low volume even at full load hours in, then id always recommend the asus over msi.
+scott greer true, although Asus laptops aren't as easily upgrade able as the msi's
I have a gt72, and this review on the gt72's part seemed completely accurate, apart from where he forgot to mention the built in trackpad is absolute garbage, everything else feels top notch
can someone give me a reason (or maybe a few) as to why someone would want such a high performance mobile notebook when it's half the price to build a better performing desktop?
portability
Convenience
For someone who travel a lot
Why aren't you comparing MSI TITAN 80S series with sky x9 sli ? You should be comparing those with the same graphic cards..
