What im starting to realize is that we Jews made a deal. GOD made his covenant with us, that covenant works both ways. I don’t know the true reasons for why the ancient Jews were kicked out of Israel twice and the temple destroyed twice. I believe it is because we could simply not stop killing each other and Hashem had enough but I may be wrong. I just figure that’s why he sent us out and the second time scattered us to the winds, so we don’t find some other place to finish the job we started killing each other. I actually watched a movie called the Ten Commandments the other day with a young Ben Kingsley playing Moses. There were some things… first of all only half the movie took place in Egypt the other half in the desert and it was nearly accurate.
It showed how the Jews, in the wilderness, would become afraid or frustrated or angry and make demands of Moses and spurning GOD. What was off was when the Jews wanted proof of GOD they wanted to hear him and Moses asked GOD to speak and they ran for their lives and begged for it to stop and then they got up one by one and all heard GODs voice together and together recited the 10 commandments. That’s not what really happened I know that much. Hashem spoke the first two commandments and their souls nearly ripped from their chests.
This is what caught my attention though. Moses said we should love Hashem, not just follow him out of blind obedience.
In the film there was one man named Zirek who was always negative. When Moses didn’t come down he got them to build the calf and then Moses came down. As I remember it Moses threw the commandments down and the ground opened up and swallowed the calf and many of the Jews. In the film Moses throws the commandments but it’s one piece not two. And then goes and sliced off the head of the golden calf. And then he goes and says those that would follow Hashem stand with me and zirek says those who would find their own way out of this wilderness stand with me. And they split up the groups and Moses said cleanse Israel and they fought and killed zirek and his followers. But yea I don’t think this what happened.
Moses goes back up the mountain and comes down. This time with two tablets. They build the tabernacle and store the ark inside.
There was also the part where Moses hit the rock two times for water out of anger and was not allowed into Israel. Hashem told him I cannot build my holy land on anger something like that.
Then Moses instructed one man from each of the 12 tribes to go and check out Canaan. They went and saw a lot of people living there already and many doubted Hashem again. Apparently they went to spy on Canaan 40 times instead of doing as Hashem and Moses instructed.
After this Moses spoke to the Jews. He told them that Hashem has spoken to him and said this. You have seen my wonders time and again and still you spurned me ten times in the wilderness but I still forgive you. 10 plagues, and 10 times the Jews doubted seems on point. So, the punishment was 40 years of wandering the desert and no man above the age of 20 would make it to the promised land. 40 years one year for every day they spent spying on Canaan instead of doing as commanded. Only Joshua and one other were of a different spirit. They wandered the desert for 40 years. Moses told Joshua to help him up the mountain gave Joshua his staff and told him not to wait for him for he won’t be returning. After that Joshua led the Jews into Israel but they didn’t show that.
Moses said that we should love Hashem and not just serve out of blind obedience. That is what they did for 200 years in Egypt.

The USS LIBERTY was a US NAVY "intelligence" of spy ship off the coast of Israel mistakenly fired upon (or so the Israelis claimed) and frankly I believe it to be true. Why? As a Marine and no stranger to how this kind of confusion can happen, especially when you consider the circumstances back on June 8, 1968 here is our American vessel in International waters about 25 miles north of the Sinai Peninsula during the Six Day War, Israel is on the verge of destruction (is this not a repetitive theme of recurring surprise attacks from its hostile neighbors) and Israel in the fog of war is shooting at everything... Friendly Fire is a problem! It is a fact of life and Death for those who actually have to operate and function in a very fast pace and risky environment. I am sorry for what happened to your comrades in arms or relatives. I understand and get it like very few fucking people understand. Just like the tragic event of 3 escaping hostages being shot and killed in a heart-beat a few months ago...
