  • It may have been called censorship and in many ways looked like censorship but at this point can we really still call it that? Genshin Impact has not slowed down with revealing characters much worse off than the targets for these changes over a year ago.

The way that Mihoyo had to push out 'coverup' skins early on the CN server because the redesign skins were't finished yet indicates that there was definitely some sort of SARFT censorship pressure involved. The fact that they mainly went after the characters that had featured in print ads and had no followup indicates that like most SARFT censorship, it was entirely arbitrary and was the result of some administrator's whim.

ALLEGEDLY someone raised the “issue” of the 4 character's skin to government and Mihoyo was pressured. Kinda like how WoW was censored because of "blood and gore", but you can find tons of Chinese film/TV with "blood and gore". So the censorship is very specific, which could possibly be explained by "someone raised this specific topic to government to censor stuff".

Ratheil is honestly just too busy trying to paint himself as "better" than everyone else by constantly painting the community as an unreasonable hysterical mob. It is obviously censorship if they had to have an emergency cover-up and Chinese players got no choice to pick the skin they wanted

I think the reason why only 4 characters were affected by this is probably because MHY wanted to get the CCP to stop breathing down their necks in a way that took as little time and resources as they could get away with. Also, I nearly forgot how after this some people thought Ningguang's shoulder blades were censored on her Lantern Rite costume but it turned out to be a shader issue that was quickly fixed.

I don't believe it was the CCP itself that was behind it. While it may be hearsay, I heard some moralistic group over there was going around complaining about things. So Mihoyo probably changed those four, told them 'see we changed them!', and the group believed they had won then went on to go harass someone else, with Hoyo correctly knowing the group didn't actually pay attention to their game. While the CCP wasn't involved yet, it potentially would have been if the harassment group had kept going.

@@brycearmstrong9370 I remember articles and interviews stating that government regulations were the source of the changes, but the IDK how accurate the translations were. i think there were two *specific* “issues” that they had to fix: jean and amber had visible cleavage, and mona and rosaria had prominent emphasis on their butts. if you know anything about chinese censorship, you’ll know that it’s often inconsistent and the rules about what has to be censored are quite arbitrary.
however xinyan does have some cleavage showing and she hasn’t been censored… so it’s possible my theory is wrong. or just nobody cared enough about xinyan for her to be censored.

To the point around 8:20, it's not really easy to tell how this has/will impact designs, however, we do know Shenhe was changed the remove some semi-transparency on her outfit. Even Deyha, who you mentioned, got some very obscure minor removal to her hand-painted shadows as to not accentuate certain areas. I would also argue that no designs since these updates have been as in-your-face as Mona/Rosaria/Fischl.
Imo the game has still been censored. It's not a 'problem' per se, but it is a deliberate change in art direction that we've been forced to deal with. It very likely effects all new designs to some degree.

When you read Rosaria's lore and that she's a rebelous nun, her new outfit showcases that much more effectively than the old one. The black/darker colors show off that lack of devotion to the Church, but to the point that the other nuns wouldn't cause a stink about it.
Her original outfit always reminded me of those "sexy Halloween" costumes and it made a rather serious, brooding character look tacky, or what you would see in parody. Something like that, I'd see a character like Lisa wearing (but not always) due to her highly flirtatious nature.

FYI, the CN censorship(for games in particular) does not monitor any new contents once the game is released, it reacts on reports. In Genshin's case, it was reported to the authority by certain women's rights group on Baidu Tieba, it was an organised compaign of cancel culture. Up to this point, this is all true n you can find the evidence online. The following is a hypothesis. If you look at the date and compare it to certain 'genshin killer''s release dates, and there are two release dates one for CN n one for Globle, on both instance there were scandal drama that hyped the community. Could this be a dirty PR move? Very much likely because there are track records of them bullying MHY in the past. Maybe in your eye MHY is a 'multi-billion doller' company, but to them MHY is a new, priviate, tiny, studio that only make games, whereas they are media monopolies. Ever wondered why the CN community hates genshin so so much? It's because they put so much money and effort on trying to let people NOT playing Genshin. In the end of the day, it is still so much cheaper to kill a game than to make one(and fail). They invented discrimination aginst genshin PLAYERS, which was exposed like 2 years ago, but hey, they owns the media (the non-political part). The truth is out there but they control the spread. So yeah. The best thing MHY did was moving it's HQ to Singapore, which give them leverage, basically threatened the CN gov to help them fending off those bullies. And that's why the censorship drama stopped.

Only sane comment in the section. I followed CN SNS throughout this. The dominating theory was indeed that it was some other competiting company's PR move all along. CN censorship bodies don't have all that time of day, they only react on reports, and report-bombing could hurt MHY in complete arbitrary ways. But the ppl in the West will just throw their blames on censorship bc they have a preconceived notion of how CN gov works. The "move to Singapore" part was more or less to counteract certain putative blockades from the US so that they can keep publishing globally under a Singaporean publisher, and not be banned bc it's a Chinese publisher.

why do I know that? I don't know about any mature woman who gets so pissy about female sexualization in games, I have had a lot of gaming female friends and the more mature they are the more they like seeing sexy female designs as well as male ones

I do agree that the colour balance with Rosaria's new skin was pretty off, considering her old one had an off-white pinkish hue that contrasted well without clashing too much with the black, and the magenta hue her fishnet stockings gave off didnt make her overly gaudy. Though it does frame her more as a nun, the sleeves were far too puffy and rounded for the "Sharp" aura she gave off. I guess many people commented how she looks nothing like a nun at all, but could hoyo just have given her more of a full skirt? Slits on the side are all fine, just something about her new leggings doesn't vibe well.

Of course I remember the censorship, especially the big instances that happened even before the CN outfit debacle.
During prerelease tests, we had a unique walking animation for Klee that was removed. Ayaka used to have regular underwear instead of those anti-incontinence granny diapers. Fischl's bottom piece used to cut off higher on her leg. Rosaria had bigger tits.
There are plenty of instances where characters get toned down. And I can live with that if none is used in official material. But that's where Rosaria suffered. In 1.2, she had her first in-game appearance before joining as a character in 1.4. During this time, her chest size was reduced, and I remind miHoYo of this betrayal in every general survey. And it's not about me wanting her with the original size, it's a matter of principal. They did it in post, not before.
If they do it once, they can do it again. So if I find a character visually appealing, there's always a chance that miHoYo will change it and potentially ruin that for me. And they keep removing things even now. Just look at Nahida's expressions during beta tests, which were reduced to the point of her looking almost lifeless in certain animations.
miHoYo doesn't communicate with the players, or allows for options in some cases. If they were to reinstate Klee's adorable strut, I'd pull for her in a heartbeat. But them removing it made me pass on her since her very first banner.

    Personally, I have two theories:
Either the game was popular, constantly on the news and, for whatever reason, it ticked someone in the CCP off and, upon a cursory research that someone found issue with these 4 characters (maybe they're the only females that this legal person who doesn't play saw or something); in a vein not too unlike how back in the poké craze pastors and such would claim that pikachu, charizard and a few other popular mons had a "demonic design" or things to that effect while nowadays not even batting an eye at grimssnarl who is pretty much a demon
Another possibility is that these mandatory changes were just a scapegoat tactic by the CCP to cover up some other controversy that either was going on at the time or they feared could be exposed in the then near future; as tinfoil hat wearing as that may sound, it is actually something that happens fairly often as a means of damage control here in Brazil, so I wouldn't find it weird if other similarly corrupt countries (especially third world ones) would do the same

I’m pretty sure it was a stunt to make it look like the company was fully prepared to change for new censorship regulations in China, but because Hoyo actually really cares about their designs they made changes that were just different enough that it looked different to outsiders looking in (like possibly the government). For example, Jean’s new design implies that she’s wearing a long sleeved shirt, but when you check in game her armpits are still out and the only real change is that the very top of her chest is covered. I’m quite certain the reason the old designs are still available for anyone not on China servers is because Hoyo has no real desire to change their designs, they just want to do the bare minimum to make it look like they care about regulations.
There was another seperate event with new regulations around feminine male character designs. As great of a character as he is, I’m pretty sure that Itto’s design was another attempt to make it look like Hoyo was taking these regulations into account. He’s the only bulky male character we have, and even then he was originally just as slender as all the other tall males until changes were made.
Chinese censorship regulations are basically the opposite for male and female character designs. Women need to cover up, and men need to be bulky and easily distinguishable from the women, which is easily done by having more skin on display.

  • @goddamnarshia

Comparing newer designs after the censorship to characters released before the censors, its obvious they toned down the designs on new characters to avoid being struck down later on. No , just because you find belly buttons hot doesn't mean the ccp classifies oversexualisation the same way. For ccp its asscracks , shading on the veg area and cleavage, and if you pay attention to the newer designs , they lack these features. Dehya had visible shading on her pants at one point , now its just a flat texture.
Don't be dumb , if it WASN'T censorship chinese players would keep the old skins instead of being forced to use the new one , they didn't just "wAnT tO uPdATe tHe dEsIgNs". Genshin youtubers man swear to god critical thinking not even once
This is what actually happened: ccp came for an inspection, they found those 4 specific characters problematic for the reasons stated , mihoyo changed their designs and forced the change on CN servers (even put up an ugly temporary skin that would cover the characters up very roughly). Afterwards, when designing new characters, they adhered more to the ccp guidelines. Again , us finding kuki and candace's designs extremely sexual or even fischl straight up being in a lingerie does not mean ccp feels the same way, and its very obvious WHAT they find problematic and since then , we stopped seeing these problematic things.

This is why Mihoyo also swapped out the original outfits with the censored ones for a short while, but they reverted back to the original outfits now that the heat has gone away.
It wasn't because they were being investigated by the CCP, but only as a safety measure of self censorship, for a limited time to placate and avoid potential future legal trouble.

Apparently a group of feminist attacked Genshin Impact so they were forced to change some characters. I think that's also why they changed from Mihoyo to Hoyoverse and the payment charged on your account is not the same. Idr is it Cognosphere? And by changing they don't have to "censor" new characters and old designs

It definitely was censorship. But it was due to a (political?) group protesting the designs and putting eyes on mihoyo. I could be wrong as it’s been a year, but Another reason why we haven’t seen other redesigns is due to Chinese laws regarding gacha. From what I remember there’s certain laws/regulations about changing characters/products after purchasing/being put out for purchase. Basically changing limited characters could potentially cause trouble. (That’s why the only limited character in the original batch was rosaria, as the group pointed her out specifically from what I recall).
Please do correct if I’m wrong I don’t remember much of what happened so take this with a massive grain of salt.

i want more skins where it would work story wise or past outfits for some.
for example if wanderer got his Scaramouche skin or if Childe a shneznian funeral skin (rip original catalyst cryo mommy).
i don't like how Ayaka got her new skin now when i would have been better to give it to her after fontain's story quest had finished and say she went on holiday to fontain and wanted to dress like a local, im not an Ayaka fan and i would love that

The traveler’s deserve skins more than everyone else at this point and that’s a fact, they are so outdated.
Having skins for characters that need them is how it should be, Ayaka is cute as hell but didn’t deserve a skin before the ogs in the game, and some characters like Lisa, well I’m happy she’s finally getting a skin because she deserves it. Bennett, xingqiu, xiangling, all should have skins by now and there’s really no excuse for them not having skins… not one. I love Raiden and want a skin but that’s not what should happen in my opinion and it hurts to say it but the others should get skins first.

Childe skin please? Maybe a summer set, or a Snezhnaya one that is almost like the Fatui video, but kinda more leaning to mobility in combat?
Would love to see Thoma as well wearing a Mondstadt outfit, or prolly and Inazuma x Mondstadt fusion ensemble.

I don't understand I don't like Mona's outfit compared to her old one but I like Rosaria's new one but I prefer playing her older skin since I prefer it.
For New skins I want Hu Tao to get one but to be honest the ones I need the most in the game are Zhongli's archon war outfit and for Childe Either his Fatui coat at Signora's Funeral or his 2nd boss fight phase.
