I like that Washington Post poll a few months back. It found most Americans are "very" concerned about climate change and thought it at least "likely" to be an existential threat, but that the majority would NOT accept a $24 fuel increase per year on their heating bill to combat it. lol

Yeah, but now we know that the very wealthy few contribute vastly more to co2 emissions than the majority of poorer people do so ordinary ppl would be right to object to that disproportionately unfair tax increase. There should be a wealth tax on big corporations and fabulously wealthy individuals, but of course they dominate the narrative to shift it away from their own responsibility.

Disproportionate? Wealthy people already pay far more of their proportionate income as tax. The lowest tax rate is 10% and the highest 27% (not including State tax, where applicable).

Why "the end of *western* civilisation" not "the end of civilisation"? Epilogue: I asked this question at the beginning of the lecture: she answered it at the end: the powerfully centralised govt of China meant they took decisive action (no expense spared) to protect the majority of their population whilst the neoliberalist western nations left it up to individuals to "take responsibility for their own safety". The differing responses to the Covid pandemic by China and the other Oriental-Asian countries compared to the approach of the UK, US, Europe and Brazil highlights this very well. However, what form does a "stabilised" climate change in 24th century look like after the collapse in the 21st century? She doesn't say what that looks like, she just assumes there's a "civilisation" after the collapse. After all, no country at the moment seems to be taking drastic steps including China to combat or even prepare some kind of adaptation to an era after the climate/nature collapse.

Climate change signals the end of democracy in its present from. The structure of government will have to change for there to be any valid solution/strategy implemented to combat the results that may occur as a result of climate change. There will have to be a drastic change in the notion of 'capitalism', something that over-rides/ignores anything to do with rationality - capitalism is only interested in making more money, nothing else, and democracy aids this cancerous/exploitative way of existing...
Thus democracy and capitalism will need to be replaced by an authoritarian type of regime that imposes changes that everyone will be forced to accept for the benefit of all rather than pandering to the individual wants of the few who at the moment control the wealth and power, and who are, understandably, reluctant to relinquish it.
Perhaps a highly morally platonian, socialist-scientific ruling elite could be the answer... however, acknowledging that human beings, being essentially animals who react according to these primeval precepts, always have an innate compunction to subvert any form of social control... Sooo... extinction is the inevitable outcome...

If there are many capitalisms, can't there also be many socialisms, and many other potential alternatives to capitalism as well? It really bothers me how she seems to have this idea that giving up capitalism is awful because we have seen Soviet communism, as if that is the only option. What we need isn't just a regulated capitalism. Lots of European countries have capitalism that is a lot more regulated than the US, but we're still barely doing anything about climate change. Because capitalism relies on growth, that we keep producing and selling even more stuff. Regulated capitalism is obviously not enough. It will have to be regulated to the point of not being capitalism anymore. So it's better to come up with a system that works well by itself, where we don't have to regulate the very thing it relies on. What is that system? I don't know. But if we're dead-set on the idea that anything but capitalism is evil, great minds will not even consider other options. With a more open minded perspective, we can surely come up with something better.

The climate scientists have been saying that Climate Disruption is caused by human overconsumption. If you haven't heard them say it, you haven't been paying attention. Instead of reading lies with a snooty attitude, why haven't you developed a branch of science that could better coordinate the different branches and areas of sciences involved in Climate Disruption? That way there will be better communication between the branches. But I guess it's easier to run your mouth than your other muscles. What's your next complaint, that the age of enlightenment, didn't turn out to be too enlightening? How we could have done better? Or how maybe it wasn't such a good idea to wipe out so many of the other species, like savage barbarians? Or how we still treat each other like savage barbarians? You can take your attitude and put it to use where it belongs. Fighting against the wealth extractors who are causing the problem. Who do you think conned the people into over consuming? The people have been consuming decades worth of propaganda. Reality TV trains people to pick a contestant and bond with that contestant, so if their choice wins, it's like they win. When elections come around, the people are now trained to pick a contestant/candidate they think has the best chance of winning and bond with that contestant/candidate. The next trick is to get the people to want to bond with a particular candidate, so the media pushes the candidate or candidates the ruling elite want promoted. The choice has become based on shallow, superficial identity characteristics, because that is what happens in the Reality TV shows they have been trained on. Why don't you fight against that?

So whats new. The earth has went through many climate & geological events throughout its history. Many cycles of climate changes that have been worse than current events. All this climate hysteria is propagated by shyster scientists , researchers, media & politicians for their own selfish interests and have nothing to do with real observational data of world wide climate. There is no existential threat to life on earth caused by climate change as ALL life either adapts, dies out or evolves to cope with the environmental conditions. Birds & other animal life migrate to locations where food & water is obtainable year around according to the climatic conditions that change seasonally. Humans do the same as well as inventing technology that allows them to live better in places that have seasonal weather changes.

What we are doing is POLLUTING the planet in numerous catastrophic ways, the largest of which is the burgeoning human population, which at some point in the not too distant future will reach saturation point where the planet resources can no longer support the shear numbers of humans dependant upon it. Add into the mix our obsession with the economics and globalisation of world trade (such as fossil fuels like coal) and perhaps you may give me some leeway in my scepticsim of why we cant win this battle. Something will have to bring back the balance........and that ladies and gentlemen will be climate change. History has proven that these events have happened before and most likely will again.

Yes, the warming had sped up and probably will continue to speed up but I don't see the arctic ocean being ice free for a few weeks in a year coming soon to be a sudden turning point. It's probable that 2022 might be the year but 2023 might not be completely ice free because the situation is non linear.

But I have to agree with Naomi Oreskes that it is simpler to change a little in the current system than everything (i.e. going from the current capitilist system to socialist system). A solution would have to encompass a body of scientists that honestly calculate a fee and all goods and services produced that pays properly for the cost of the destruction of nature that corresponds to those goods and services. Then the fees should be paid out evenly to the public. Taxes should be collected to fund projects that repair and preserve nature. These are tweeks that can push the system to solve our problems. These tend to work better provided humans intervene EARLY! Not something that I see happening. I think something along the lines of a dystopian future, where humans suffer, and, the forces of capitalism and democracy become associated with the destruction of nature (even though it didn't have to be the case) is going to be a dominant feature of humanity's future. Thank you for your comments.

Some people mistakenly blame population growth as the driving force behind Climate Catastrophe. Furthermore, they blame the underdeveloped world for industrialising as the chief culprits.
However, these assertions are not support by the facts. Taking China as an example, they produce less CO2 per head of population than say America. Plus they have extensively incorporated major green energy schemes in China's infrastructure. Just a America's infrastructure collapses due to underinvestment. In addition the annual hydrocarbon consumption in the US is double the that of China.

Regulated capitalism or even circular capitalism is where the answers lie. I had to frown at the statement that "freedom" and "capitalism" were "conflated." I'd like to hear the argument where they have nothing to do with one another. Socialism requires an authoritarian state in order to operate properly. That's why all Marxist evolution roadmaps lead toward dictatorships or one-party governments. Capitalism absolutely has to be regulated. It will defeat itself without it. Monopolies are an example of that. It comes down to how much or how little regulation is needed at a given time for the optimal result, and that discussion should be constantly addressed under each administration, but when taken to extremes (over-regulation vs de-regulation) I am concerned of abuse. Neoliberalism worked until it was abused, for example.

With respect to stellar academic Prof Oreskes I was disappointed that her presentation mostly talked about the problems we are familiar with, when I was hoping & kinda expecting that at this crisis stage she would address the actions needed to be taken. Sadly the scientific arguments that have informed us for decades have also failed for decades to scare us enough into generating mitigating actions. This seems to have fallen to the likes of David Spratt & David Wallace-Wells, albeit relying upon plenty of sound science data published by so many including the Potsdam Institute, Michael Mann, Peter Wadhams etc etc.
Ironically the actions of a schoolgirl Greta Thunberg have had far more success in grabbing the public's attention to consider how serious, & existential, are the challenges which face us & particularly the youngest generation. However, hopefully, it may indeed be the scientists who rescue us from our plight - if anyone really can delay the setting sun on the horizon.

The study, published in the journal Science, created a huge dataset based on almost 40,000 farms in 119 countries and covering 40 food products that represent 90% of all that is eaten. It assessed the full impact of these foods, from farm to fork, on land use, climate change emissions, freshwater use and water pollution (eutrophication) and air pollution (acidification).
“A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gases, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use and water use,” said Joseph Poore, at the University of Oxford, UK, who led the research. “It is far bigger than cutting down on your flights or buying an electric car,” he said, as these only cut greenhouse gas emissions.
The new research shows that without meat and dairy consumption, global farmland use could be reduced by more than 75% - an area equivalent to the US, China, European Union and Australia combined - and still feed the world. Loss of wild areas to agriculture is the leading cause of the current mass extinction of wildlife.

Anthropocene=3rd wave of industrial revolution, atomic age. 1st wave was the 1770s w steam machines, 2nd came after 1870 oil gas and electricity. I think that industrialization is the key in this problem not capitalism, as its first and second waves were implemented not only by liberal democracies but all sorts of other systems like absolute and constitutional monarchies, II German Reich, Austro-Hungarian empire, tsarist Russia, Meiji Japan, Ottoman empire, totalitarian states like Soviet union, fascist Italy, Nazi Germany they were also industrial and so was the 3rd wave adopted by all Ex Soviet bloc states, by shia theocratic Iran and sunnite Saudi Arabia. There is no state just a few leftover populations of hunting-gatherers or pure agriculture and nomadic pasture as a life form. The problem is not the ideology or religion or secularism, its the simple fact that nobody wants to voluntarily give up comforts privileges of modern healthcare, housing, industrialized food supply goods and services and return to pre-industrial living standards with 35 years of average life expectancy. Since we wont do it voluntarily, mother nature will toss us back to a short nasty and brutish life. Or even worse, extinction. The scientific consensus is that the stable Holocene conditions for agriculture will be gone by a few more Celsius temperature rise so the food wont be enough to sustain the population.
Finally you also hit the nail on the head as to what system will come, Plato described the slide from democracy to tyranny as the last phase of state which is caused by the extreme situation of climate change, food shortages caused by extreme weathers civil war etc.

In 1970s, as still very much a child, I was reading small pamplets that had future warnings about the population explosion, pollution and famines. It had lots of forebodings as to the future of the planet’s ability to look after the growing human population. This got me started on thinking about trends leading to the future and I read books like Future Shock, The Third Wave and Megatrends, etc.
This reading had me thinking, is this all being planned out and manipulated by faceless people behind the scenes; a Global Conspiracy of sorts. I read lots about various secret societies and groups all seeming to have plans for a future planet. Many of them morphed into today’s think-tanks and lobby groups. I thought this was a way I could try to forecast what the future may look like.
Eventually, I came to the conclusion the future will not be like some Jetsons cartoon or 1970s Utopia vision. It is going to be far far worse than that for billions of people and very likely the poorest of them, which we are mostly sheltered from in our Western countries and lavish lifestyles. It seems as if these consequences were of no real concern for those in power, and even to many of us, that added to my thinking that some grand conspiracy was in place to change the world for select few, the so-called 1%ers, the neo-aristocracy.
But despite all that, I came to realise that there is no conspiracy and that the world is not being manipulated, it is just been exploited by a few and we are all trying to be part of the select few in order to escape our lot in our lives. Witness the massive and growing migrations of refugees, etc. trying to get to a better life and bring their families with them as well. So we are all really part of the problem by our striving to better ourselves. It has been said that we need two and half earths if the whole population were to live like us Westerners.
So back to the trends I was informed about in the 1970s and what has been happening since. The biggest trend is the population exponential growth and the consequences thereof. I read recently that if we added all the weight of all land mammals together, 96% of that would be us humans and our livestock and only 4% are wild mammals. So big is our impact on the natural world.
This impact on the natural world, our exploitation of natural resources for industry and pleasures, has caused so many problems we are now in the 6th mass global extinction. But that is not all, our fish stocks are reducing, our arable soils are losing suitability for growing crops making us use even more pollutig fertilisers, our forests are making way for cash crops and more and more farming lands for our needs. We are also using fossil fuels at unprecedented levels to support our growing populations for power, for industry, for construction, for transportation, for chemical and plastic production, which contribute to our pollution. Strangely all that pollution too, in the air is acting like a shield from the sun delaying some of the current warming trends, some are even suggesting we send even more up as a sort of geo-engineering. But also concerning that pollution is killing our sea life, and its ability to absorb our waste. We even take in a teaspoon of micro plastics a week into our bodies affecting our health directly.
So we have the skeptics, doubters and deniers, many of which are sponsored by the fossil fuel industries, which help to influence people who have their ‘confirmation biases’ confirmed that there are no problems. I too was influenced by these people a few years ago now. They have done their part to delay any meaningful actions for decades and concerned scientists first warned about these future problems in 1992 and more recently in 2017 with graphs showing how things have gotten worse in just a mere 25 years. We now have famines, heatwaves, floods, storms, droughts, city water shortages, forest fires, as now regular ‘Once in a hundred years’ events happening almost yearly around the world. I am not going to convince you in this one post, but I hope like me you may make your own investigations and discover what I have concluded after many years of research, that we are headed to an Uninhabitable Earth.
So yeah, things have gotten so bad and the effects are now so noticeable to even most lay-people, but in actual fact it is really much much worse than what we see as many scientists have reported already. The feedback loops are only now just starting, and we have what are ‘known unknowns’ effects leading to ‘unknown unknowns’. So the future is concerning because it really is unknown and I worry for younger generations.

Why is there a reluctance to address the main obvious underlying reason for all problems being discussed: exponential growth of human biomass and per capita consumption of resources and disposal of waste. Controlling human fertility is the main issue rather than discussing various ingenious means of sustaining our consumptive way of “anthropocene” life? Thermonuclear war is not a reasonable way to control population growth, but we are heading that way.

      Is this mythos still around..?
Overpopulation isnt a problem if an equal global distribution on a sustainable frame is implanted.
Currently 20% of the world Populationen is producing 80% of the pollution while trowing away tons of food and products produced to fail early every year.
Many first world nations currently struggle with an over aging population.
And are also to blame for many of the currently observable displacements aka refugees.
Helping the developing countries rise there standards of living and education etc evidently reduces the number of children born.
Teach about contraception instead about the popes ideas and get them clean water and basic medical threatment so they dont lose that many children to avoidable diseases.
We breed new pandemics in our meat industry and exported our dirty industries in foraign nations.
Pointing on those guys living a dollar a week, digging up your rare metalls and recycling your old electronics while goin..
"Hey - they produce to many kids and look they still use coal!
I wont change my habbits until they are carbon neutral.."
...that kinda is an ass move.
Avoiding responsibility still doenst change the fact you will be effected in different ways by the consequences.
And also shouldnt the west have known that future water wars competing with people who were raised in civil war wont be a breeze?
They keep losing wars against insurgents..
And those syrians learned how to weld a tank out of tractor parts. Thanks military advisers

Steering towards a more sustainable global lifestyle to safe the climate, nature and the species is something most would profit from.
I would rather spend the limited time we have left, trying to convince the non sociapaths.
And working on problems that we actually have an influence off and that would benefit all on the longterm.
Overpopulation is like fusion power just as a constanst negative threat looming in near future it seems.
And thats still just an secondary symptom, like water shortages
If we keep destroying and polluting our reefs, fishing grounds, fertile land, nature in etc.
There wont be any clean and healthy land left those reduced populations can go anyway.
Everyone who hope sterilizing people will solve the problem will probably just head to a soylant green future.

That makes no sense at all.
First we arent as specialized and are omnivores.
Second we have a bigger and smarter brains and developed cool stuff like artificial fertilizers, domesticated more productiv grains and cattle and are now eating cheetos while we watch youtube in our air conditioned homes made out of plastics
      Third
Afaik most 'hawk' species populations are theatened by extinction. While you are talking about human overpopulation..
There are alot of primitiv folks with less science knowhow who found a better ecological balance. The human species is part of nature and can either adapt or die out like many other species before
And there are alternatives to current technologies that would work better - if we would acknowledge the benefits of those investments.
      Wasting money on a spaceship
to leave the planet or dismantling civilisation isnt viable and sound more like the plan of a cultleader ripping of his sheeple or a jamesbond villain.
And where the heck u wanna go with 1 billion lol ... they are gonna cannabalize themselves after a few months..

An 'ad hominem' is an attack on the person.
For example calling someone unqualified without any subsidizing of those claims. Or using insults. Like you did.
And a 'non-sequitur' is "when the conclusion from an argument does not follow logically from its premises"
Your are comparing 'hawks' which isnt even e species.. with humans.
Hawks dont dig up coal and use it to power there refrigerator.. or use drag nets to destroy sea life...or put pestizides on the ground and into the water ...
And the dismantling of civilisation and reduction to 1 billion wont be enough if about 2 billion is currently to blame for 80% of pollution.

When something could have been done it was the “the last man” who made sure that nothing would be done, when there is nothing that can be done, once we reach that collapsed state, rest assured that the “the last man” will rip into what remains of our humanity.
Each of us has within ourselves that “last man” who is tired and who just wants to sleep and be bothered no more. If that is so then Humanity is on course to achieve just that.

I haven't checked the altitudes of these huge cities, or their proximity to agricultural areas that might be resistant to temperature rise (how many tens of cities are we talking about ?).

Oreskes is neither a scientist nor particularly intelligent. She's a science historian, and she's an activist when it comes to any discussion about Climate Change (originally called Anthropogenic Global Warming, because the AGW activists didn't think anyone would catch them lying about the "science" of the alleged greenhouse effect). So no, I don't appreciate Oreskes, and I think it is high time she issues a mea culpa for her unsubstantiated article claiming 97% of scientists accepted AGW ideas as if they were factual!! She looked at one online database, and didn't save her results to allow others to cross-check her work. Bad scientific method, bad scientist.

Climate change is caused by: Profit = income - expenses. Erroneous, because it fails to recognize the environment as the only source of our sustenance, or true Profit.
New Definition is needed Solution: Profit = our gratefulness and loving care for the Environment, and for the sustenance that it provides for all of us.
We can create a world economy that supports this new dictionary definition of "Profit". P.S. Hurry! It may be too late, but it's never too late to try.
Stop treating the environment like an expense and start treating it like our true and only Profit. Stop burning the paycheck. P.S. New law, 2 kids per family.

Do you think anyone has total control over the food? No, so no one is trying to distribute it fairly. What you are saying is that the government should step in and totally control who gets food and how produces how much of it. That is a recipe for disaster.
Look at the soviet union. It had the ability to feed its people 2 times over, but there were always huge bread lines at grocery stores and their shelves were empty. Why? Because most of the food their farmers produced rotted because the government distribution system was so corrupt and slow the food would go bad long before it reached the people it was suppose to feed.
Yet this is the model we are suppose to believe will "fairly" distribute the food in the future?
Capitalism is not perfect, but it is the best that we have found.

1.Billionaires will find their beach front mansions under water-new beach is inland where poor people live- billionaires must pay poor people huge amounts for the beach property- hooray for wealth redistribution
    2. Sea levels rise- whale habitat increases- and their population expands- Yay for whales
    3. More ocean means more fish which means more seafood for the poor - Go poor people!!
    4. Expansion of sea surface means more rainfall and more fresh water-Down with droughts!!
    5. More rainfall means deserts across the globe become arable farmland and we have a huge surplus of low cost food- great for previously starving, but now overweight Africans.
    6. melted glaciers mean Siberia, N. Canada, Antarctica, Greenland and Iceland are now open for people to move and live there- Yes to homesteading.
    7. Huge reserves of oil and natural gas are discovered under Antarctica- oil becomes cheaper than water- Mid east oil is no longer important and conflicts cease- Save the Camels!!
In support of starving Africans, whales and camels I am leaving my Hemi Challenger idling all week long.

There is a lot of physics in twerking, you've got inertia, acceleration, deceleration, joules expenditure etc. It's really important for the global quotient. It is a scientific fact that if all the twerkers faced east, the earth's rotation would slow down and the axial precession would be affected, and we all know that the axial precession is what causes the cycles of climate change.
