John Santos is a great musician, composer, bandleader and producer. And like many traditional African drummers, he keeps the history of his people and uses his music to re-tell that history. John Santos has spent his life and career telling the history of people who have habitually been left out of the history books because they have been considered insignificant by those who control academia. His music reminds us that Afro-Latin music has been a part of African-American Classical Music (aka "Jazz") since its inception. His example rejects the treatment of Afro-Latin music as a mere footnote to the history of "Jazz." John Santos learned well the lessons of true masters and elders of the culture, and in passing that knowledge on to new generations he has become one of the most important educators about Afro-Latin music and culture. And for all of his talent and all of his accomplishments he is an extremely humble and beautiful human being.

This is a formidably fantastic presentation of Charanga through the eyes and mind of Cachao's (forgive my spelling) innovative approach to Cuban musical composition, as told to us by John Santos. I had the honor of playing with John at the First Mar Y Sol Festival in San Francisco, 35 years ago. I was the first cuica. The world is better off with a brilliant, musical historian in the Afro-Carribean tradition like John. It cannot make up for the exploitation and destruction of so many indigenous people, but it brings to the forefront of the world stage a history, that has been kept secret from English speakers, that we English only speaking Americans can delve into and thrill to the indigenous and classical Cuban formats of the music that continues to enrich our lives.
