I'm from Östersund, where Nils is from. He usually practiced in the basement of a local, well, "café" during the days. It's also something that's labeled as a cultural house~ish that are scattered through Sweden (pretty much every town), where the government supplies people with practicing spaces and shit. And let me tell you, Nils is a fucking beast. The entire house echoed that shit when he was down there, which was everyday pretty much, for years. The dude is a fucking beast.

Just a short anecdote: In an interview, Dark Funerals's singer claimed that in the post production of "Angelus exuro pro eternus" the producers added dynamical and rythmical variations to the drumtracks, to make them sound more human and less like a drum machine. Marthyn Janovich has a drum academy on RUclips where they have drummers like Nils demonstrate their techniques. Nils uses fingers on his blasts but switches to full closed grip and flick wrist for power in his tom fills. Nils also finds the practice pad invaluable to his regimen as you can hear inconsistencies that needs to be worked on.

You're the only reaction channel I like watching man. Being a death metal drummer and guitarist myself I can say we're constantly bombarded with "you're just hitting stuff really fast, theres no talent, no feel" blah blah, but you notice all the little stuff we're doing. You make it clear that it is not easy what we play, anyways. I just wanted to say thank you for appreciating what we do, i smile when I see you react the same way I reacted when I first saw or heard a nasty drum riff, you're stoked to see other genres talent and can point it out, yes because you're also a Musician, but you're not a metal musician and you can still appreciate it all as much as us who live and breath the stuff.

i think wearing heavy shoes with high spring tension in your pedal actually helps.if you have good technique, which he obviously has,you only push once downwards, with little force since the weight of the boot drags the foot down, the high spring tension pushes your leg up and so you need little force to keep blasting.

This was my favorite video, I didn't particuparly like Nils' band, but I ended up listening to his drumming. The best thing to get those chops back is to start easy, then keep improving!

Have my vote for chason westmoreland, or lyle coopers legion of the serpent from sick drummers early recordings of the faceless.
Chasons ambidextrous blast beat patterns on the Hate Eternal - various songs video is insane, so much power for a drummer performing at that speed too.
I'd mention his drum playthrough of the spiralling void with the faceless but his performance of 'Become One' with Fallujah is even more phenomenal 😍

Craziest thing about these black metal drummers like Nils here is they do it in full corpse paint makeup, armor, and heavy calf or knee high boots, and their set goes for at least an hour long if not longer, and every song is played at about the same speed as this song here, and have to do it all over again the next night and so on and so on as their world tour goes on for over a month or more at a time. The stamina and agility of black metal drummers like this one here is insane, not to mention I can only imagine the long (or short) term injuries they must deal with too to their tendons or whatever over the years, especially Nils who has been playing like this professionally for over almost 25 years now.

Ahah I didn't even need to read that you're a drummer, you react just like every drummer I've ever met, especially that face when you hear the insane speed at 2:11. Non-drummers don't usually react at this kind of things!
    Fun video :)

Dark Funeral does play full sets. They just co-headlined the North America tour with Belphegor. They played a pretty normal set 30-45 min. Nils got the stamina to do so.

The thing I like most about Nils is he hits really hard. His fills are pummeling, and his snare doesn't drop out during blasts. Total beast. Would make any band sound incredible.

So, you've discovered cymbal accents on blasts - this one of the ways which a lot of extreme Metal drummers add groove to their playing, it also helps with time keeping as there is a pulse that is easier for everyone to lock into.
Derek Roddy, Flo Mounier and George Kollias are some of my favs that do this.

I studied Jazz guitar for about 7 years but I love playing Black Metal.

    Drums is probably trickier though.
