- ‘Triple Flute: The Making Of’ documents the work of Dustin Selva, a flute builder and musician who creates unique sounding Native American Style flutes for sound healers and musicians from all over the world through his company Elemental Flutes.
The short documentary was filmed in Dec 2021 in North Carolina and it features every step of the creation process of this magical instrument, from the selection of the wood to the birth of the first melodies.

The doc’s original soundtrack ‘Sopro da Vida’ was crafted to tell the story of the birth of the flute ‘Yawara’, which means ‘Wolf’ in Tupi-Guarani (Native Brazilian language). It was recorded at 432Hz, highlighting the Elemental Flutes in different tonalities and styles within the sound healing spectrum. It also features traditional native Brazilian instruments, acoustic guitars, Indian percussion, cinematic strings, and sounds of the South American forests.

Greetings Dustin, excellent video! I bought one of your drone flutes over a year ago. A F# in Koa with a second block so I can play either 440 or 432 hz. Excellent beautiful sounding flute, truly one of my favorite. I highly recommend them.
The only thing I wish I did different in hindsight is order the drone side on the left side, seeing how I am right handed, I wouldn’t have needed to reach over the drone plugs with my right hand, which even with large hands is a little challenging. I am compensating by using clear tape instead of the drone plugs which helps.
Your flutes are not only beautiful but sound so good. I look forward to playing them always and look forward to getting another one of your beauties. Thanks again!

Very nice. I like how you do your birds. Funny how we all do things differently but come up with nice sounding instruments. I burn 🔥 ALL of my holes 🕳. Finger, bores, sound hole ramp and all. Truly all traditional. I have a triple flute from Dana Ross I got about 6 or 8 years ago. F#,F#,Bb. Triple’s are always a crowd pleaser. Anyway, really enjoyed your video. Potentially but I’ve used the xacto so much i just use it for most everything, plus I don’t need to take the time to sharpen it.

Interesting processes, but hidden were how things like excess glue was worked out and how defects were sanded away once it was integrated. These tricks are important, so that sound does not rasp or become breathy. The tooling was very specialized and so few will be able to replicate your processes. Larger deeper toned instruments may be where you might go next, but frequency versus size of cavity and calculating the right finger intervals may require some very precise trial and error until it does what is wanted. Why are deep voices needed? End of the age voices will call to spirit. These deep tones evoke longing for Homeland and sense of ancestors. Instrument might be a predicted 5 feet long. Section by section might require many round pins to lock into place, dowels through a sandwiched top, bottom, and middle arrangement, to ensure no coming apart as it ages. 5 feet with a footing/ speaker opening, would put sound low and expressed by Black Crow feathers splayed side to side like a wild Turkey display, yet only with 6side feathers and one center one.
The bell part with feathers would be mostly hollow, with no fingerings, below 3 feet, thus, only vibrating surfaces. Sections would be Oak, cedar, black walnut, spruce, and a Maple base. 5 woods matched together to represent the five civilized tribes, and include five animal spirits. Owl, wolf, bear, bobcat, and eagle. Will require good breathing technique, and have many octaves capable. Might cost a lot to make, in time and effort. Great job on your flute!
