- Samples was a stock car racing driver and carpenter by trade who went on the radio at the age of 40 and told a story about catching the largest fish ever seen in his hometown. The story was a humorous tall tale, and the recording of this radio story became a best-selling novelty record.

I've known people just like Junior all my life. Wonderfully pure & happy
This record got him on Hee Haw. Archie Campbell had heard it. Junior really was just a good old country boy with a genuine gift for storytelling and humor. That kind of authenticity is sorely lacking in popular culture today.
I seen Jr. in Nashville in 1971. I was sittin' two people down from him at the Broken Banjo Bar. God, could he knock 'em back. I heard him say they was a' filmin' 8 episodes of Hee Haw in 10 days. Also heard him say he does his best work with a massive buzz. Seemed like a good feller.
The reason he could knock them back was because he weighed 400 pounds.
That’s a legit country accent. Tv actors NEVER get it anywheres close.
What a treasure. The last time I heard this was nearly fifty years ago. Thanks for posting.
Good one, still got my Zebco 33.
I still got mine too, Blue. Always kept it in the boat so i could skip a lure way up under the low hanging cypress
@@WickerBillVintageCountryMusic Yeah, use mine for the bream and bass, good eatin'.
Yea, but Junior had a Zebby-co
I got 4.
I had this record about 45 years ago. Hadn't heard it since then till now.
Huh 🤔
Makes you wonder how many record fish have been eaten by people who didn't know they had a record?
You gotta be over 60 years of age just to remember Jr. Samples and HEE-Haw , I sure to miss GrandPa calling out what's for Supper and the Wee-Haw Girls were pretty nice as well !
I'm 47 and I remember from reruns. Hee haw was one of the best TV show ever
Sixty years ago I first heard this.
My neighbor bought it.
Well, work entered my fishin life
Wow! Never heard that before. :) Same hometown as Junior. Talking to his granddaughter no less. :)
singingcowboy674 you must not be from around here. That’s story 50 years old
Ahwas Drunk. Best. Excuse. Ever.
Funny thing this wasn’t an act, the was Junior.
LOL I had forgotten about Junior Samples and Archie Campbell until the winner shared a video this morning. ust happened upon this one and will share with some La buddies, LOL
I watched hee- haw in the day, never to be forgotten….😮
Ole Junior
This an interview by Jim Morrison of the Georgia Game and Fish Department.
Must be the southern lizard king lol.
...not the one from the Doors?
He sounds just like my cousin here in the mountains of Eastern Tennessee.
Awesome song Bill
The interviewer sounds like the guy out the movie "Slingblade" er UM
Some folks call it a sling blade, I call it a kaiser blade, mm-hmm.
This is my favorite Elton John song.
Uncanny how much he sounds like Richard Pryor
I reckon I did, I think I did. Lol
A pre- Hee Haw Alvin "Junior" Samples. Who is that interviewing Junior?
That's interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Jim Morrison is the interviewer here.
This cut is from Junior's album entitled "The World Of Junior Samples".
My father !
@@jimmorrison5546 that's a fun listen. I could just see Junior answering his questions in his deadpan fashion.
❤❤❤
I ate im and den I weighed myself.
What is this?
did he have any kids?
Several kids
That’s a joke?? You gotta be kidding right?
Amazing how we somehow thought this was funny back in the day.
Was this supposed to be funny?
I'd really like that 3:34 back.
Bohemian Realists won't comprehend the humor.
Begone, Yankee.
Its hilarious
Who in his/her right mind would buy this thing?
People in 1967 did. This record got him a gig on the classic "Hee-Haw" Tv show.
It’s real comedy. Something todays comics have no clue about unless it’s profanity laced.
Me because this is my Dad who interviewed him. Awesome for me to relive this!
I ask the same question about 90% of today's recordings.
jesus what a waste of time THAT was. I thought this was suppose to be funny? THIS got him the job on Hee Haw?!? He was great on that show, btw.
Yeah, I try to look at things from the distance of perspective, and humor being subjective to a time and place. And he was funny on Hee Haw. But this? I can imagine it on a continuous loop being played in Satan's waiting room.
also this was 1967 things and things were much different, humor wize than today's "Butt hurt over every joke" folks.
@@fuzzfrancis435 Exactly! Context is everything.
Lulu was his drug dealer.
