The political spectrum changed tremendously from 1968 to 1976 and for Ted Kennedy Chappaquiddick ended his chance for the WH. Carter came in as a centrist conservative Democrat in '76 and he still had many of LBJ's Great Society in the Congress from Fritz Mondale, Tip O'Neill, Byrd, Triple H, and Ted Kennedy, and they all wanted the same and Carter said no. It was a turning point in the Democratic party. In the end when Kennedy lost the primary he formed the Democrats for Reagan SuperPAC and helped Reagan in 1980. Ted was a champion but his heart was in the Senate and not the WH.
My grandpa always said always said that it was crazy how much everyone hated carter. Lots of them wanted Kennedy. No wonder why Reagan won in a landslide, then destroyed Walter Mondale, Mondale lost twice to Reagan badly
5:58 Yes, there were likely a number of reasons contributing to Carter's loss to Reagan, but Carter himself apparently still blames Ted Kennedy to this day. I was surprised watching an interview with Carter from around 2010, surprised how bitter he still is towards Ted Kennedy.
Yes I thought those were the main reasons why. We went over those in class. But Kennedy's opposition was a biggie too. I was wondering if they ever made up...& you said Carter was bitter in 2010. Kennedy died in '09. It's sad. I was thinking they were able to come together for Obama, because they were both big supporters of him
@@krishnamckay3247 no I don’t think Carter ever buried the hatchet with Ted Kennedy. And this was only a year after Kennedy died. Jimmy Carter still harbors a huge grudge against Ted Kennedy.
Joe Biden was and is a Blue Dog Democrat. There a difference in being a conservative and a conservative Democrat. Everything exists on a spectrum. Spectrum's can be broken down into categories and subcategories and each one of those exist on a spectrum. Humanbeings are complex and human entities, corporations, political parties, governments, charities, labor unions etc are even more complex. Biden has been a more progressive president then his career would have suggest but that's not unheard of LBJ came in to Congress a new dealer then started shifting to a conservative Democrat then to back and fourth then to being one of the greatest domestic progressive Presidents we have had.
Yeah it's very interesting to see these 2020 campaign videos in which Biden is often described as a fiscally conservative centrist. Totally at odds with the way his administration has governed in practice. Ended up being a pretty standard progressive liberal on most issues.
After Reagan lost the primary to ford in ‘76, he spoke on fords behald. When Kennedy lost to Carter, he refused to shake his hand. One became a president and the other stayed in the senate for another 30 years. Character counts.
The ridiculous effort of Carter to shake hands with Teddy during the Democrat convention was priceless. Teddy ignored him and wandered away as lap dog Jimmy followed with his hand out. Carter lost to Reagan when Ronnie said during a debate, “ There you go again”. Carter wasn’t helped by the US embassy in Iran under lockdown. As Reagan was sworn in, the hostages were freed.
Yet Carter won the longevity sweepstakes, still alive, nearly 12 years after Kennedy died, he will be 97 if he lives until October while Kennedy was felled at just 77.
Shame that the GOP-led CIA helped Carter to lose by flubbing the Iran rescue mission. Who doesn't confirm their watches are running on time? Despicable.
I'm on the left and adore JFK & RFK. Ted Kennedy wouldve lost my vote after chappaquiddick. His behavior was unforgivable. Carter was a conservative president and people forgef that he governed on the right. He didn't realize y have to have backroom deals u have to break necks. No incumbent - from either party - would have won in 1980. The economy, the energy crisis, and Iran were largely out of the White House's control. The economy didn't recover until the third year of Reagan's first term. Had it not, he would have been out on his ear, too.

Cameron Clark in 1984 and when?
@@ryanjavierortega8513 he meant 1980 when Mondale was also on the ticket
When Mondale was Carter's running mate in 1980 and when Mondale was Pres Candidate in 1984?
Carter would never have been president at all if the republicans had had the sense to nominate Reagan in 1976. But they insisted on Ford.
Reagan was not even that popular, and only managed 50% of the vote in 1980. Showed you how badly Carter fumbled it.
Interesting and informative book. If you can find a copy buy it.

Kennedy torpedoed Carter's health-care plan so Carter couldn't get credit for it. That says a lot about the reality of politics.
