It's not illegal to not be straight in the Philippines but a lot of people think it's unethical. Philippines is predominantly a very traditional Christian country with Islam being the second largest religion so you can only imagine how hard it is for non-straight right?

We should grow out of that. Spain, which introduced us to Catholicism, has had gay rights for a long time now.
It doesn't mean that we're very traditional, we should close our doors to minorities.

Definitely agree with what Hannah said, it’s not just that all around the world there’s still so much to do. No, for the last two/three years it’s like things we already did have, progress that already was made before these different movements (e.g. lgbtq+ and feminism, anti racism) became mainstream 2017 onward, those things are in danger as well. It’s very concerning how we are on one side the most progressive we’ve ever been and on the other side the ignorance, intolerance and straight up hatred is comparable to very dark times, worse and way worse than it has been for two decades.

the problem i have with how pinoys treat lgbtq+ people is the fact that people in the community are not treated as people. they are treated as comedic accessories only. they will tolerate you if you benefit them. especially if you're the life of the party. that's it. nothing more really. they will only "like" or "accept" you if you are funny or entertaining. this is why i have such a disconnect when it comes to my own country and fellow countrymen that i don't even bother anymore.
even in the media representation. most if not all gay representation is always in the comedy format or "funny" supporting characters only and sometimes gay people get to be the "tragic" main character which is getting too old tbh.
and don't get me started on the slurs being thrown around even when you're just walking on the street minding your business. you get catcalled and harassed on the daily. some even hate crimed.

@@TheSageArchetype Mind you there is a huge difference between being tolerated and "accepted". The reality outside of your skewed view about our current state is concerning as the majority of our sisters are victims of hate crimes. You must be someone who lives a privilege life for you to express yourself without getting harassed anywhere. Most of us have to "tone it down" if we want to return home safely. So, good for you. Others can only wish because truth be told, unless you fit our societal definition of gay and queer, you are not, by your own definition, “accepted” or even safe here.
Living in this fantasy that we are being celebrated when in fact becoming good at your craft as a “BPO Leader” or being funny like all the “celebrites/vloggers” you follow is the only way for us to be respected in this country. Go outside your circle mama, you’d be surprised how many of the cases we have right now were incited simply because we wore makeup and a skirt outside.
Sogie bill has yet to be enacted and it has been 20+ years now since that bill was proposed. We are far from thriving. If you believed that LGBTQ+ people in the Philippines is thriving because we have gay politicians, leaders, celebrities, or that you can flaunt yourself at pride events, then you are truly naïve and politically tone deaf. It may not be an issue for your delusional ass, but that doesn't mean it isn't happening and prevalent in this country.
Lastly, imagine dismissing someone’s account while saying “have some respect for those who are victims of violence and hate” in the same breathe. Unless you lived on Biringan City, then definitely not a single Filipino there would discriminate your weird ass. I may be a straight Filipino male, but I want to say that I have friends in the LGBT+ community.
In the Philippines, from my experience, many are tolerant, but there are few who actively value and appreciate the LGBT+, taking time to understand and love Filipinos.
Also, there is a very real fear about stigma. Long story short, I have friends who are afraid to come out, and my parents refuse to allow my brother and I who are both straight to marry LGBT+ women. (ie: trans, bi, pansexual women).
So, in short, there is some progress, but more can definitely be done.

Here in the Philippines, it depends on where you are from, and what kind of people you surround with. If you're from Manila and other big cities like Cebu, people will be fine with LGBT matters. But if you live in a small religiously Christian town, then it's not that different living in a small town in American Southern States where evangelicals rule. The main keywords here are "TOLERATED", "INDIFFERENCE". Most Filipinos nowadays won't care already if you're an LGBT person, you do you. Being an LGBT is not the worst thing as Philippines is among the most LGBT countries in Asia, many people from other parts of Asia like Indonesia, Malaysia, West Asia, etc. would love to have the same tolerance Filipinos have for the LGBT people. And there are other countries where they may be "LGBT Laws" imposed but people remain violent against them. While it's not perfect, let's not forget the privilege we have in this country that other countries don't.
HOWEVER, what we need most is to be "PROTECTED" and "ACKNOWLEDGED". That's why we keep on fighting for SOGIE Bill to get passed so that our government finally recognizes and acknowledges our existence and our rights as an LGBT Community, and protect us from abuse and marginalization.

There are actually several community members that are part of the cast in several daily live tv vareity shows.

They accept us but they limited our access to voice out our needs. Even in politics, our 1st transgender person politician "Geraldine" receives a lot of backlashes because of Her gender identity and with that being said they think that gays can't handle what Real Men and Women can do and always thought of us a people who can only do good in Comedy bars or Parlor/hair salon etc.

I was also confused when Marina said that because PH's acceptance of the Lgbtqia community is actually ahead compared to others, if anything, 'drag' is the only thing that's kind of new in the PH since many gay people just mostly choose to do either impersonations, lipsync or stand up performances even when they're not in a 'drag ensemble'.
I guess the Lgbtqia's problem in the PH is only the representation for the qia+ (because PH has already a lot of notable celebrity gays, trans and lesbians) and maybe being taken more seriously and not stereotyped into just 'entertainers', 'comedians' etc.
it's true that there are some extremely conservative people in the PH but they're the minority. Look at how even McDonald's in the PH used celebrity drag queens to endorse chicken. That means the PH market understands and will be even willing to buy products promoted by lgbtqia+ communities
