  • Anyone who cares about the finish of their car should never use a car wash that's not touchless. Repeated washes like this will break down and ruin your paint job. Just listen to how much force these rubberized strips are putting out, slapping and pounding.

For those who haven't studied in Car Wash College and I personally can attest that if such a collage did exist it would be named Belanger University. I would run the program for 22 weeks. You learn all about the car wash industry and what can happen when you maintain a car wash the right way. But some companies actually do have a car wash collage for those who are looking to get into the car wash industry. People should do research and see what it really takes and what goes on behind the scenes. When they bash car washes it hurts all of us. I am inclined to join the car wash collage but I love to learn about how these complex machine's operate. You should know what your bashing before you say something.

The idea of Soft Touch Washes scratching your car is an old idea.
    Let's do a Deep Dive:
Commercial car wash brush types (sorted chronologically)
Filament (nylon, polyester, etc.) A looser version of what you'd see on a broom. The older it goes, the more frayed it gets. Fraying causes scratches.
Cloth Used on older machines, such as Broadway, Autec, etc. Traps small dirt, and can't be torn off easily, actually bent my liscence plate once.
Foam (Different for each brand) Can't trap dirt. Unless someone for some reason ties a rock in the brushes, you aren't getting scratched by these.
The rumor is very old, and so is Filament and Cloth, thus, the rumor is outdated. Be weary of car washes you go to.
In manual bays, use the high pressure to spray off the foam brush if you're going to use it beforehand.
In IBAs (in-bay automatics, or just automatics for short), Make sure it isn't filament or cloth, or that its well maintained.
    Hope this helps!

Well, I will just be nice. It is true that Automatic car washes are not all safe. As a customer standpoint, I would stay away from the old and dirty-looking car washes. As long as car washes are maintained well, then they are at least safe for the vehicle. Also, there are touch-free automatic car washes that do not use spinning brushes. I did go to a car wash not too long ago that had a new brush system. It replaced a touchless system. However, it was misleading because it still had: "Welcome to the Laserwash TOUCHFREE system". Because of that, I would always look inside of the wash bay if possible for any of those brushes. There are also some auto car washes that offer both touch, and touch free. I actually understand what you are saying. It looks a bit worrying because of how that machine moves with all of those brushes. And by the way, there are a lot of people who are car wash enthusiasts which is why they like Automatic car washes.

Gas Station washes aren't terribly bad if they're maintained well. Express tunnel washes are better and hand wash.. has got to be one of the worst thing you could do plus those brushes don't apply such force unless routine maintenance is done. Those brushes work off of air pressure usually and some of the Tunnel equipment uses Hydraulics or Electricity. Another thing those brushes are foam called FoamBrite which is a name that the company of this system (Ryko) names their brushes. Foam material called Carlite made in Italy, To be honest I hate people bashing car washes when they haven't done any study on them in the first place!! They're not bad.

Soft touch car washes are usually well maintained and the brushes are made of closed cell foam, closed cell foam is water resistant, dirt resistant, and completely safe on the vehicle. Car wash brushes do not scratch or ruin the paint job of any kind of vehicle. People gotta stop berating all kinds of soft touch car wash systems.
