Most people do not understand this show and view it in the light of the modern girl boss retconning of modern tv/film. YOU ARE MEANT TO BE ROOTING FOR THE JACKAL! that’s the whole point, i read the book as a teenager and rooted for the jackal. Bianca’s end in the show proves beyond reasonable doubt that this show is about the jackal and not anyone else! Bianca’s girl boss vibes also isn’t unrealistic, there are loads of girl bosses out there who overate their competence. she’s not exactly a good person either with the way she used and disposed her informants & colleagues, though she projects an idealistic good person but she’s obviously as flawed as the jackal and she alluded to this by saying she does this bcos she likes to win, she’s as narcissistic as the jackal himself just not as competent and in way over her head. her insufferable persona is part of the whole show cos that’s the only way the ending works & the jackal wins!
@@kingmonde exactly!! she’s a plot device to get you to root for the jackal more! the jackal needed an adversary that makes you root for him. in the original 1973 & 1997 adaptations the adversaries weren’t really as inspiring as bianca in this show. the bianca sotryline & his family life in spain made the jackal a more interesting character and not just a one dimensional hit man/villain and it worked absolutely well. You can tell this man is evil but it doesn’t stop you from rooting for him, just like the penguin! only that the penguin end makes you want to hurt him badly, the jackals ending makes you want to see him hurt more people!
Not gunna lie, I was basically doing the exact same thing all the way through this one. You'll love episode 8 then by the way, as this fleshes out more of Jackal's character!
The fact that the detective is a ruthless liar herself and has gotten multiple people killed, it's not too much of a reach to root for the contract killer
Personally I think a lot of this is done on purpose to make us not sure which one we should be rooting for. Not as some sort of message, but just as an interesting quirk. I quite liked it and found myself rooting for both at different points. Overall I really enjoyed this new rendition and thought it was quite well put together.
Just watched Episode 8... Most of which was given over to Bianca's character. Only got through this episode by fast forwarding through all the scenes with Bianca in.
Eddie is carrying the show and I for one like the fact they have humanized a killer, it's gonna make future episodes more interesting as he has to juggle his family and other life

I didn't go in expecting this to be anything like the book or films. My impression is that the Jackal has become synonymous with a top assassin, the best in the world. That out of the way, I don't see why either the Jackal or Bianca need to have families to be complete characters, especially in an era where more and more people are choosing not to be in long-term relationships let alone getting married and having families. It would be much better to have the Jackal and Bianca as means justify ends driven obsessives on a collision course.
@@lxpang , exactly thank you for staying this out. It doesn't make any sense. So what's the point of all this nonsense of family, how do we root for someone who cares more about her job that her family. It just doesn't make sense. Most streamers only release a few episodes for the press and I refuse to watch those because it's not realistic for a full season review and disingenuous for you guys. Definitely worth sticking with this one as the later episodes get better! Thanks for commenting and checking out the review!
The original film with Edward Fox was pretty much as the book. This version has an unrealistic soppy back story and totally unrealistic female lead hunting him down. Michel Lonsdale was way better and far more believable in the film.
I completely disagree... the assassins family background is necessary, and gives the interesting dichotomy between a professional life as an assassin and an equally important life of a family man. How does one interfere and/or support the other. The same is true of the female protagonist, she has a family, but is so entrenched and seduced by her work, that she struggles with family life... they both are keeping their professional lives from those that "matter most?" Anyhow, I am in episode three now and it is starting to get more intriguing, well done!
So only lonely people can be killers on Jackal's scale? Back story for him is excellent and him having little boy actually makes me root kinda for me, while Bianca's family story is too much in my opinion, I would accept more easily if they had white bottom lesbian with her, and that would actually fit her work and would make her more compelling character.
So many holes in the plot and im I the only one that think Jackal couldn't hold his own in a CQC scene, comes across very weak physically for the role to be believable
Bianca is an intentionally unlikable character. But shes also unlikable in general. Not the best choice of actress. But the rest was brilliant, loved it.
It is good show in my opinion, yes it girl-boss energy 😊but she does get hurt when she needs to sacrifiace northern Irish girl pawn just for a telephone number. they hint at the begining that she had issues to learn about firearms when she talks with her husband when German chancellor is killed but we don't get more explanation.
what does that mean? Why doesn't she belong? I enjoy the fact that she was also in Bond as an MI6 agent, and here she is the same, interesting connection. What a stupid and ignorant comment. Oh well, not everyone is intelligent!
Why does hiring a coloured or female actor make it DEI She portrays the character as unlikeable and with moral issues while still technically being the good guy That’s the whole point of the character in the show
The day of the jackal: After the 5 episodes available, one must unfortunately state: Absolute rubbish. I was really looking forward to this series and was bitterly disappointed. Where to start: The script, pumped up with family stuff, ensures that a) Bianca comes across as totally unsympathetic and you wish that the Jackal would kill her from 3,850 meters so that this role would end, b) the Jackal and his family are perceived as totally unnecessary. Bianca as the extremely written Mary Sue is so annoying in every scene that I skipped everything with her, ditto the Jackal's family nonsense. I'm also disappointed with Eddy Redmaine, his very androgynous, rather feminine vibe doesn't suit this rather tough role, more like Danish Girl. All in all, another Sky Original total failure.
The plot is so obvious and almost every character cartoonish. A fat, middle aged woman who clearly does not know how to move like a soldier-waddling is not SF training and manages to beat up a big ol Irishman. Her bosses-a librarian and a guy who acts like he is about to pee himself. Her dumb, gormless white guy subordinate `Did they find the body?` `Do you want me to check`? Actors of the calibre of Charles Dance are one dimensional racists. Woke crap and an insult to the excellent novel and movie with Edward Fox and other genuine actors. Slow horses has also been infected with the woke virsus but the acting is excellent. KST and Gary Oldman in particular.
It's not for you. There's a growing audience of content that's popular amongst black women specifically: Grotesqery, Them, Found, How To Get Away With Murder, Scandal are all starring female characters like this hunting down white male serial killers
I dropped it a few episodes in, not because of how much I disliked Bianca - I’m all down for a shitbag main character - but because the show doesn’t seem to entirely agree that she is one. Or rather, it seems to be saying that her being as awful as she is is ok because she gets results. Like, in episode one, she murders a child. It’s not her hands that do the killing, but she fabricates false charges to imprison a child with a heart condition without cause, and the stress of the situation triggers a cardiac event that kills her. Emma dies as a clear and direct consequence of Bianca’s actions, so at least in my opinion, Bianca murdered her. Now, the show at least agrees that this is fucked up. But it also seems to want to say that despite the immorality of the action, it was justified, because Bianca faces zero consequences and this seems to be framed as a good thing, because she’s getting closer to the Jackal. Now, fair enough, I didn’t finish the show, so maybe the later episodes shift this perspective, but I really did not like the thematic messaging this story was putting down in its opening hours, and I did not have it in me to stick around and find out if it changed its mind on whether the cops doing child murder was justifiable because it helped them get a lead.
