For those who think using a grid is "cheating," please understand that artists have been using grids for centuries. Some made a grid by stringing twine in a frame to make squares and setting it up to draw landscapes outside. Some even used a camera obscura, including Vermeer. I do photorealistic graphite drawings. If I made an outline using a grid and gave it to my husband, he wouldn't be able to make it look good. The grid is just a shortcut. We need to stop accusing artists of cheating when we use a grid!!!

For murals its great, I have been a working artist 40 years now, first building large stained glass, kiln fired painted church windows, then after 10 years painting murals and then working for myself, there is absolutely nothing wrong with using this method, but I used this method for realism, freehand expression is whole other method..!

You could make the grid easier by not measuring and just making lines on both sides of the ruler you’re using, perfect width every time 🤗 1:25

Also just tried it recently, but Im too lazy to measure the lines, so I use the width of my ruler for the squares and adjust the pic to match the number of squares😅it worked well enough🤷🏻‍♂️

It's not cheating, it's a wonderful practice method and gives you a starting point that will guide the rest of your project. It's building a framework. Is it cheating for engineers to use a scaffolding? Of course not.
