Whakarewarewa Forest (The Redwoods): This forest is home to over 200 km (125 mi) of mountain bike trails, making it one of the oldest and most extensive networks in New Zealand. The trails range from beginner to expert levels, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
Skyline Gravity Park: This is the world’s first year-round, gondola-accessed downhill mountain bike park. It features six different trails catering to all skill levels and offers spectacular views of Lake Rotorua.
Tuhoto Ariki Trail: Named after the Māori priest who predicted the 1886 Mt Tarawera eruption, this 5 km (3 mi) trail winds through native bush and is rich in history1. It’s perfect for intermediate to advanced riders.
Western Okataina: This 22.5 km (14 mi) trail offers stunning lake views and a mix of challenging climbs and exhilarating downhills. It’s a shared trail with walkers, so be mindful of others.
Volcanic Soil: The trails in Rotorua benefit from well-draining volcanic soils, providing unbeatable riding surfaces and varying topography. This makes for a fantastic riding experience regardless of the weather.
Rainbow Mountain: Located less than half an hour south of Rotorua, this trail offers a challenging ride through a geothermal setting with the reward of a natural hot pool soak afterwards.
