What you said about a pen ( a word and an image, which is our mental concept) has nothing to do with synchronic and diachronic definitions.
Synchronic is the study of language over a specific time period.
Like in our generation, we are using many short forms of words. It can be a factor of our generation.
On the other side, diachronic is the study of language throughout the time of origin (that's why it is part of historical linguistics).
And the arrangement of sounds to create a proper, meaningful word is the study of phonology, if I'm not mistaken.

Scientific words like biology
Have meaning in isolation like bio means life and logy means to study
