Usually it doesn't kill everyone, but will kill most of them and whoever survives will be close to death. It'll also buy you the time you need to kill the red zealot. The optimal time to shoot it from my experience is right after you stop the first stagger from the red zealot.
The Blacktail is still better for its consistency. The SG isn't bad at all though and in times you need higher capacity or better accuracy, it's better to use the SG.

It's doable with any of the handguns. I'd recommend the SG-09R for the village, Blacktail for the castle and island but occasionally use the Matilda with the stock for the late game bosses.
