    I have the 144, 145, 146, 147, and a 149 in my collection - all bought used from Japan auction. I am saving to get the 90th anniversary edition brand new and this will be my first Brand New pen. As you mentioned, you will never be wrong with a Montblanc pen and it is one of the most satisfying writer I have.

    I paid a whopping $33 for my brand new Montblanc149. Yes, that was the full retail price back in 1966. It came with a lifetime warranty which was used once when it leaked from the piston ring. The pricing change shows what has happened to the dollar over the years.

      Wow! And I thought about $300 back in 1989 was not horrible :) I'm not even a fan of fat pens but this icon is industrial design perfection - in form & function, it's peerless

      I got mine for $960; it it truly amazing how much inflation has progressed.

    • @CarzorStelatis
      @CarzorStelatis Год назад +1

      Adjusted for inflation, $33 in 1966 is equivalent to $308.98 today. I don't think the fact that the pen costs about 3x that is down to the strength of the US dollar - the prices in Europe are similar.

    I was lucky to find my 149 along with my dads couple of pens. One of his was an ink pen that I bought for him in Thailand in the late 70's. That one was lost but not the 149 which he got in the late 80's or 90's. I absolutely love. I found a great pen just so close by. Thanks dad.

    Awesome video as always Dan ;)
    Just wanted to note a small detail regarding the Nib sizes.
    If you buy a classic Montblanc149 model you can choose nib sizes... (EF, F, M, B, BB, OM, OB, OBB) they are also mentioned on the official website as well.
    However on the Montblanc website Listed the Rose gold 149 90th year edition model with only (EF, F, M, B) nib sizes, but that is not really the case. In fact if you buy one new from the boutique you can have them special order for you any nib size available for 149 as in the whole selection In addition to O3B nib !! as in OBBB :D
    This also works for the classic 149 of course ^_^
    I can confirm this since I got one of them and they special ordered me a O3B it takes around 6 weeks.
    Just wanted to share this info in case anyone is interested in buying this gorgeous pen =]

    I was able to snag a 75th anniversary 149 years ago at the DC Pen show. This is the 149 that comes with a diamond in the upper cap band in the “o” in the word “passion” (which you would only know about if you examined the 75th anniversary 149).

    I like the 149 brand new not everyone treats fancy pens like yourself I bought a whole set with the ink barrel with the fancy box and 18 karate rose gold . It cost me 650.00 plus postage and tax. I loved it. Thank you for the video my late father had one but it was inherited by my older brother

    Thank you for an excellent and interesting review. I find that oversized pens in general cause me hand fatigue, and so I avoid them while at the same time understanding that I may be in the minority. I find that my 149 leaves my hand very tired. I found your review quite useful and appreciate the writing sample. Please keep up the good work!

    I was curious about a couple of things:
    1 - I'm a lefty, and I've always had problems with hard starts on all of my pens. Would it have something to do with hand control?
    2 - After a year of drooling over this pen, I finally got one. Used, of course! I wouldn't call it a flow issue, but sometimes it kinda dies on me for a moment or two. I don't use Montblanc exclusive ink in it. Do you think that it may be my fast-drying ink?
    3- Mine isn't a 90th anniversary because the nibs are different. Is the M on the side of the pen due to the design at the time it was made?
    I love your videos and hope you continue to make more of them!

    The rose gold reflects the exquisite color that epitomizes luxury, exquisite taste, and exclusivity meant for the 90th-anniversary commemoration! I do hope MB offers rose gold as an option in all of their flagship models just like the new edition of flagship Rolex watches. I truly love this pen. It's an eye-catcher for the FP enthusiasts!

    I bought my Mount Blanc in 1976 from The Pen Shop in Sydney, Australia. I have a love/hate relationship with this pen. It’s absolutely beautiful to hold, beautiful to right with. But, it’s only a pen for the desk. If I were to put in my suit jacket it sweats into the cap and is then unusable until I can clean it. I also own a 144, and it does the same.

    Hey Dan
    I bought the Montblanc Meisterstuck 146 90th anniversary fountain pen with a fine nib and it skipped a lot when I wrote on Rhodia or Claire Fontaine paper so, my pen people sent it to Toronto to be serviced ( I live in Canada ) It came back a bit better but still skipped ANNOYING!!! Do some pens just not work for some people??
    Would love to know your take on that.

    I think the rose gold is attractive but a bit feminine - I decided I should get the regular version. Dan, just out of interest, in starting a pen collection would you start with the MB 149 or instead start with the Pelikan M1000 (or the M800).

      ***** Do you know if there were any other widths then Medium offered? Or if I still could change it? I would send it to a nib-meister. I know Lutz Fiebig of Interpens really well, hes our repairsman for our pen shop. But I'm afraid he ruins the nib and the money I could get back of this pen some years later.

    I'm 24 and I wish I did well in life so I could afford this beautiful pen LOL! But I'm still very young so collecting fancy pens goes in my bucket list. However, my modest pen collection that involves Lamy Safari, Jinhao 159, or Pilot Metropolitan along with some calligraphy nibbed pens surely enrich my artist self. I do however own one gold nib pen that has a flawed nib but I'm planning on getting it replaced but I'm not sure if will fit my budget.

    I have a 149 which I bought new in 1976. It's a beautiful pen to wright with, but my only complaint is that I can't put it in my coat pocket because ink sweets all over the cap and round where you fingers hold the pen. The dealer said the is "NORMAL" so my 149 just sits on my desk.

      Jonathan Raven That’s why I cannot clip it on my 21K Brioni overcoat. As expensive as this pen it, it’s cheap as compared to a 21K coat! I have a stain on my 2K suit and it pissed me off.

Of course, it does functionally write, but it does not "breath with a soul." I do love my 146, but it was a gift from a friend. I find it hard to think of parting with so much hard earned cash to experience the 149 even buying pre-owned. Perhaps someday. Seems a fine pen, but appears to be seriously overpriced. So many other pens for less are far more beautiful and interesting. Just my two cents.

  • @GenWivern2
    @GenWivern2 10 лет назад +4

    Nice photography as usual, Dan. :)
    There's no shortage of pens at this price point. Seems to me that Montblanc get away with giving you relatively little for the money - to get to the same level with Pelikan you'd be looking at a Toledo, for instance. Whatever. There really isn't much point in considering these objects simply as writing instruments; they're more like couture items, sending out messages about how tasteful, sophisticated or simply filthy rich you are. Not for me, but it won't be my bank balance taking the hit.
    The price tag on this pen is laughable in opinion: it's just a sophsticated hollow stick with a bit of bent metal stuck in one end and a cap when all's said and done. Same goes for all the others. I *can* see the point of a used 149 at the prices you mention, just about, but the nib would have to be phenomenally good.

    • @GenWivern2
      @GenWivern2 10 лет назад +2

      Certainly, but it's a lowly selection compared to this sort of thing. I'm a nib chaser pure and simple, and all my "serious" pens are from 1920 - 1950. Half of them are Mabie Todds (although I don't collect as such, the 61xx Swan series is well represented); the rest are divided between Waterman and some British ebonite pens from the 1920s. The majority are on the small size and all have soft gold nibs. The most practical writers for me are firmish fine semi-flexes, but there are a few wet noodles in there for fun.
      The thinking behind this has been to avoid the models which attract a collectors' premium without compromising at all on performance. To my mind the pre-war nibs and feeds remain unequalled for feel and flow, but they're not going to be everybody's cup of tea. Given a $300-400 budget the right 149 could be a contender, but I'd be much more likely to be looking for a hard rubber Waterman.
      It's mostly a bit of fun, but I've batted the "what your pen says about you" thing about with SBRE Brown a few times. MB unashamedly markets opulence and exclusivity, and at $1000 new that white star undoubtedly accounts for a large percentage of the asking price. Mind you, given the likely resale value it's not that daft a buying decision - in the same way as you're unlikely to lose much money on a Panerai or IWC watch, for instance. But that's more of a banker's way of thinking than an FPGeek's ... isn't it?

      Hardly, if you have ever actually handled a truly old 149 (50s-70s) you will realize how terrible these modern pens are.

      +Nibsmith My friend, la MOntblanc anni 50' era una delle migliori penne mai realizzate , quelle contemporanee no. Non fosse altro per i materiali usati . MY Opinions the SAilor realo ( Pistons) è sicuramente superiore , non fosse altro per i NIBs fantastic ! Vogliamo parlare della OMAS Milord ?

    I will never buy this pen. I can get hundreds of rollerball, gel pens, and mechanical pencils for the same amount. The most expensive fountain pen I ever owned cost around $ 3 (1990s), and it lasted 8 to 10 years. The current one has lasted 33 years, and was a gift (don't know the cost, may be $10). Greetings from India.

      It goes hand in hand with the idea of there are those who buy fountain pens to write with and those who buy them to sell. Far too many other people would not dare soil their fingers with a pencil, rollerball, gel pen or mechanical pencil. To each or her own. I have encountered an attorney whose passion are pens and bottle inks and she has acquired and continues to acquire high-end fountainpens. Why would anyone come to a RUclips channel about a fountainpen and declare they would not spend any money to purchase one and then ridiculously compare them to other writing instruments. Also, a twig with s little mud writes also, but not going to the forest looking for one or praying for rain to make mud either.
