My relatives that swore smoking was bad for you all died fat pre 75. 2 of them being the exception. My uncle who had 5 bypass surgeries that made it to 73. My grandmother who made it to 75. Just because some things are mildly poisonous and do not cause immediate negative symptoms does not mean that they should not be avoided. People right now don't need to hear about moderation. The big problem right now when it comes to things like this is that people feel like if they don't partake, they are missing out on something. You can't teach moderation to someone who believes that if they abstain altogether they are deprived of something. The truth is, you aren't missing out on anything if you don't smoke. Only after someone accepts that can they even begin to learn moderation. But once they know that, they might also decide they have no use for it.

Furthermore, the most harmful aspect of cigarettes is the tar and other additives that is in them, cigars and pipes only have tobacco in them, no additives. There’s a risk and cost to everything. Non smokers should not feel self righteous as compared to smokers. Their decision is nobody’s business but their own. My grandmother is 87, smokes Marlboro lights. My dad died at 57. My uncle who is in his early 50s does not smoke or drink is physically wrecked with health issues, while my other uncle smokes, vapes, drinks moderately looks better and is in better condition than he was 5 years ago. There are many contributing factors to health, and moderately smoking cigarettes, pipes or cigars or what have you is but one small factor in one’s overall health

I’m a former extreme marijuana user (4000 mg edibles were a normal thing for me and constant marijuana smoking daily and constantly) and I’m struggling with leaving that addiction cold turkey since my first confession shortly after my baptism Easter of 24 and immediately felt the NEED for confession after smoking. I’ve used nicotine vapes as a replacement and “quit” those and have switched to smoking cigarettes. I feel the difference in something that makes us “intoxicated” and something that doesn’t as far as how the action is a sin. I still want to quit smoking in general but I’m so addicted to the act of “smoking” and I’m trying to quit. Any tips are helpful really.

People get water poisoning during the summer typically. You drink too much water, usually too quickly, and you flush your electrolytes/dilute them. Symptoms are similar to dehydration. I've seen it on military exercises where guys are ordered to drink lots of water, show symptoms of dehydration (but actually overhydration) and then end up drinking more.

This is one of the most insufferable, tea-totalling, high horse, morally superior comment sections ive ever read.
I am a Catholic, ive done a laundry list of drugs, including but not limited to Caffine, tobbaco, alcohol, and cannabis. Currently the only drugs i use now are tobbaco in the form of cigars, and caffine in the form of coffee or tea.
I drink caffine typically once a week, after Mass, in the parish hall with my fellow parishoners. I smoke one to three cigars per week, they are nice, classy, and end up feeling super "dialed in" when im about half way in. Very stimulating mentally and physically.
Coffee used to be forbidden by the church and caffine is also addictive, most people dont even know they are consuming drugs every time they open a beer or drink their morning coffee, or afternoon tea.
Get off your high horses people and recognize that you probably use drugs, of one form or another. Get over it, and use your drug of choice responsibly, with temperamce, and moderation.
Dont even get me started with the double standard that surounds cannabis and the Church, much of the Church still very much believes in "reefer madness".
Just my $0.02. Not that anyone cares, just wanna add to the conversation.

I️ enjoy pipe tobacco. The crux of the issue is precisely what Jimmy said: the poison is the dose. The comments I’ve seen all deal with overuse and addictive effects of nicotine. While nicotine is addictive, cigarettes are not the only way to obtain a dosage. Most of the lung issues can be avoided through mediums which do not inhale. Additionally, nicotine pouches are readily available now with little to no negative side effects in low dosages. Is pipe / cigar smokingthe healthiest habit? Absolutely not. But if you’re a cigarette smoker it’s a better alternative, especially if you don’t inhale. If you can enjoy it in moderation by all means enjoy! Personally, I️ try to limit it to a couple times a week, but that’s not a necessity. This is speaking as a pipe smoker off and on for 10 years.

You assume we’re addicted. Addiction is absolutely a sin. You don’t have to be addicted if you smoke cigars or pipes. I think cigarettes are distasteful because they are used for the purpose of “getting your nicotine fix,” which is not the purpose of pipes or cigars. Cigarettes are, I believe, inherently meant to feed addiction. I smoke a pipe about twice a week. I just gave it up for the 40 days of Lent and had no issue or cravings. I regularly go a week -maybe every month or two- without it to make sure I’m not developing a need for it. It’s a wonderful and relaxing thing. You have absolutely no idea whether tobacco is displeasing to God. All addiction is, but not the thing itself. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph all didn’t eat cookies or have ice cream or drink soda or sugary drinks, which I’m sure you partake in, if only occasionally. Sugar is also bad for you. Sugar is also the single most addictive substance on earth, more than cocaine and far more than nicotine, and it has severe withdrawal symptoms. Do you genuinely think God is displeased with you for grabbing that oatmeal raisin cookie? For drinking that honey-sweetened tea? For feeding your ravenous addiction?
Obviously im not serious, but the exact same principle applies. When you begin to eat 10 cookies and drink 5 sodas per day, every single day, then that’s overdoing it, and is likely sinful. Just because YOU have a certain thing about tobacco, you shouldn’t demand everyone else stop taking part in the small pleasures of life.
"One of the marks of a certain type of bad man is that he cannot give up a thing himself without wanting every one else to give it up. That is not the Christian way. An individual Christian may see fit to give up all sorts of things for special reasons-marriage, or meat, or beer, or the cinema; but the moment he starts saying the things are bad in themselves, or looking down his nose at other people who do use them, he has taken the wrong turning."
      -C.S. Lewis

Your fast food example is better, and actually, yeah I'd agree that even a modicum of fast food is deleterious to your health to a slight degree. But I'm not sure we have proof of even that. Sugar and fast food might be perfectly fine in moderation. But re: smoking, I hope you don't mind if I just quote the Wikipedia article at you: "Smoking just one cigarette a day results in a risk of coronary heart disease that is halfway between that of a heavy smoker and a non-smoker.[55][56] The non-linear dose-response relationship may be explained by smoking's effect on platelet aggregation." One cig a day takes you halfway to the status of a heavy smoker for risk of heart disease?! That's quite to fast food and sugar, where a small treat a day might be perfectly fine.

These family members quit when I was an adult. Not only did their health radically improve, so did my ability to spend time with them without feeling profoundly ill. It’s helped us all. Many vapes are simply distilled water, flavoring, and nicotine in an electronic delivery device. (Check the ingredients, because some vape fluids have formaldehyde in them.) Nicotine is not itself a carcinogen, though it can raise your blood pressure. Modern cigarettes are full of additives that make them more addictive, and they contain some 40 different carcinogens. It is likely the additives that make them so dangerous. Native Americans used tobacco for centuries, if not millennia, with no stories of ill effects (that I'm aware of). People who roll their own cigarettes often report that they are less addicted, and have no ill effects.

We as creations of God should respect what God has made, which is us, since man is made in the image of God. I understand that some of us enjoy smoking and enjoy it, but from personal experience and studies that i’ve seen I think it’s bad for you even in small amounts. A pipe or a cigar is a beautiful meditative experience that sharpens the mind and prepares one for the day to come. And yes, most poisons are medicines with unhealthy doses. Opium based products are both wonderful pain relievers and also massively abused and when the dose is too great cause death. A cup of coffee contains a small amount of caffeine, you consume an ounce of pure caffeine you will die an extremely painful death. A glass of scotch or wine is a wonderful experience and a great way to share company or celebrate an important event, a bottle of the same substance will have a less pleasurable experience. Tobacco isn't mind-altering the way that cannabis is. Also, cannabis is far higher in tar than any tobacco. So, how does it not contribute to cancer risk?

Lmao, doobie dan. Thats a hilarious web name.
Ive talked to multiple priests about recreational and medicinal cannabis use, and have gotten mixed answers from all of them, one comparing its use akin to that of alcohol, meaning used moderately and practicing temperance. another is absolutely against it, another was somewhere in the middle.
Personally i think "reefer madness" is still very strong in the church, ive never seen someone from the church actually attempt to gather actual facts about cannabis. Just look online about if catholic cannabis use is permitted. For instance one priest i asked mentioned, to his credit said he was unsure, but said that modern strains of cannabis are 350-370 times more potent than the old stuff grown back in the 60s and before. Thats simply untrue not to mention impossible. If landrace strains have a thc content of 5-9% and the most potent modern strains hover in the low 30% range, thats an increase of potency of 3.5-6 times, an order of magnitude lower than what he said. This isnt to knock that priest, its just to say that i think alot of catholics are not informed on the topic.
I gave up weed for lent and honestly its been really great, not sure if i really want to use it again. But i certainly dont knock the occaisonal user for partaking in moderate amounts, avoiding getting "stoned" but more of a light buzz similar to alcohol.
Alcohol consumption makes me feel very ill, even after consuming 1 or 2 beers. I havent drank in excess since i was about 22-23 and got nasty sick. I was a daily weed smoker for sometime, definitely abused it, however ive felt very connected to God while smoking cannabis at times too.
Who the hell knows, i certainly dont, neither do any people who act like they are "morally superior" for not smoking marijuana, using tobacco products, or drinking alcohol.
Coffee used to be banned by the church until a pope (i forget which one) tried it. More people are addicted to caffine than nicotine/tobbaco, and cannabis combined if i had to guess. And if they tried to quit their caffine addiction most couldnt.
People need to get off their high horse and stop judging people for silly stuff like their drug of choice, we all do drugs some are just more socially acceptable than others.

Jimmy sort of dodged the question from Matt. How many times a day do you smoke your pipe. Jimmy replied, he doesn't count. He could have said, one, a couple, a few, or I lose count.
That being said moderation (the dose) is what counts. Being in the LA area, I fbelieve it is far more dangerous to be stuck in traffic on the 405, on the way, to or from work.

This whole debate is so frivolous and unnecessary. Do things in moderation and use common sense. Jesus drank alcohol, but never enough to compromise his mental state or health. Same you would assume goes for smoking. Cigarettes are different because they do actively cause damage. But tobacco smoke you don’t inhale really doesn’t cause damage. I feel like this whole debate came up with people who smoke weed. Weed actually has more tar than cigarettes.

@@1MDA I really literally argued for alcohol isn't a sin in my youth group when i was 20 years old lmao. I'm 21. Last year I remember doing such weird words coming out of my mouth and the man holding bible simply looked at me funny 🤣😂. Funny then now I feel 😅😜 convicted. Yup 😁 didn't go back 🔙😔 to that specific youth group..mostly because there was some guy that hated me for no reason and was an a hole idk why I guess he was born or made that way ill be generous and say born but either I left as I realized I didn't belong there but hey! I wasn't sad I was sad for wasting my time there! And I left ⬅️◀️ to look for God the son else where! After 2 other youth groups I'm in my 3rd one in less than 2 years. I'll feel like I gotta go to a 4th one because this one has the attitude of a protestantized youth group because of the lack of practicality of the faith which as a young man I need more than complicated theology. So anyways yeah that guy's justifying his sins. It's sad for anyone to do so not merely him one person doesn't make me sad. Because my mother tells me masturbation isn't a sin and she has been convinced by the female famous psychiatrist/psychologist famous in Spanish world 🌎🌍 that masturbate is a way of knowing the human body wether you are biological male or female. And I don't get angry 😠😡 then but i was firm and told her it's wrong and weird view 🪟. And she stuck firmly. Some people hold psychological pseudo soft science as their God and worship it practice more than they practice Christianity and worship Jesus Christ. It's weird because I think that description is true of my mother. And I've prayed for her by my only BIG sins are wrath ,lust, gluttony, sloth. One is already too much. But wrath and lust are my main ones. I almost feel and see as though I am it's pet and slave to it lust and wrath are my owners and I obey them. I couldn't find anyone holy ENOUGH and higher to where I could feel their santifiying grace from God. I've sniffed holy smells before from father Charlie and friar From there Christ king Catholic. Church..I feel very miserable. I'm a desperated. And desire abandoning my nest I've not left since I was a boy. I've only ever gone to Texas.. United statesians. And Mexico couple states there. But I'd like to cross continents. And go to holy places where monks lived such as Russia 🪆 specifically obviously at holy Orthodoxy churches. Where it's really cold ❄️ 🥶. I shower 🚿 with cold water. And even then the lust doesn't showed off ..compared to butter and grease. Those shower off easy when I scrape them but compared to lust. Lust is the ultimatum of evil butter for me that's very tempting and it looks delicious but only when I'ma already sinning again do I remember how pathetic and miserable I am. I don't believe saints exist im america. So I'll go abroad. I believe exorcists could also get the job done. But I'd hate to see my faith fail me there. Because I lack faith very deeply currently. I just hope I'm not going to hell. That's why I can say alcohol and smoking is bad because I've admitted in 2023 that truly in December I drank alcohol to make myself feel good and numb my sins paining me for a few seconds of course if obviously felt sooook gooodd I can't lie until it wore off after an hour more and the alcohol itself tastes disgusting bleh. I just felt fleeting joy 🍾🍻😌🥴not from taste. But from feeling of lack of concentration and consciousness. 🥺😬😑😐. I have more faith in prayers than in the natural medicine. And any medicine. If a saint were to appear to me or Christ himself demanded my inclinations to sin be done I'd worship him with my body get married to Catholic Orthodoxy woman and have my children worship him too. I'm a virgin which is surprising. I'm attractive at least on the surface. But I have fungus and rotten teeth which the teeth I don't really care for. So I hope there's a not shallow woman out there. But a saint for me to marry woman Now after all suffering has fell upon me I shall respect the male body as if it were not my own but given to me by God father ❤️ 😢😭 I definitely deserve hell 💓 especially whar ive done and seen which id be surprisdd if a human i tell also wouldnf be surprisdd. But I know God see all lfhe degenerate crap I've seen with my eyes and done. Gratefully I believe at least that maybe God has kept me from sinning fornicate preventing me from giving away the male virginity like as if it were candy 🍬🍭. That's something I'm happy for. Now I do hold hope that I also can hold in my arms a virgin woman when I marry her. But that cannot be done without major holy true Christ follower praying for me! Amen God bless yuo
