Totally agree with the pacing - this was for me by far the best paced Stormlight book. In all of the first 4, there were either long stretches of page time or character POVs that were really slow. This book is the longest in the series, but it is the one that I went through the fastest and had the hardest time putting it down
Yall gotta check out ryan cahill's bound and broken series. If you like this you'll love that series. His fourth book comes out at the end of March. He's no where as famous as Sanderson but he self publishes and writes at a good clip too, and his stories are incredible epic fantasy at it's best. He really invokes Tolkien as well. I'll be getting into more of Sanderson's stuff eventually.
Bound and Broken is a fantastic series. Far better than this transpecies romance garbage. TC Edge Bladeborn Saga is also another epic series worth checking out!
Delightful review! As you said, as massive as this book is, it is so immensely readable and addictive. I wanted to take it slow and savour the journey, but I could not put it down and ended up tearing through it in about 48 hours 😂. Will definitely reread it at a slower pace in the following months. I will have to digest it to give it a definitive ranking, but it is definitely in the top tier of SA books for me (which is big praise considering this is my favorite series ever). Some of those character arcs… wow
Hahahaha I feel you! I finished it at 3 am yesterday because I was NOT able to put it down 🥲✨!! I am so happy you enjoyed it! SL is also my favorite series!
Halfway through Day 9, and it's pretty great so far. Revelations left and right, great flashbacks this time, merciless pacing from Day 5 or 6 onward, surprisingly coherent and impactful even for a non-cosmere guy like me. Feels like the planet Roshar is a main character now. This particular book has really been the planet's story
Can't wait to start this book . The stormlight archive is such an unique reading experience. All about the world building and the goosebumps when the pieces are coming together. If this book has more of that I am in for a treat ;)
No spoilers. What I loved: finally we get some answers. We also setup pretty well for Books 6-10 (incredible how it will feel something different entirely). Loved some of story arcs. What I didn't like: God what happened to the prose? In some parts it felt like reading a modern book with teenage dialogues. The first 600 pages (more or less) take forever to get going. Some discussions about mental health are a bit too direct, ok, yes, it will help some people to read those words but they feel out of place.
I thought the book was good , however I didn’t like where every character ended. It makes me question how big of a time jump we’re going to get in the next book. There were three lines that completely took me out of the book I won’t say who said them, but one was the word slut, another one was let’s kick some fused ass, and the last one was I’m his therapist. 😂
Agree, he's taking the fantasy world he created and slowly turning it into modern Earth culture...which is NOT why I read fantasy. But the book for the most part is 🤌
Yeah, it's pretty cringe when squeaky clean Brando Sando uses swear words lol. As someone that would make a sailor blush with my speech, I'm always struck with a feeling of "well, bless your heart😅" when lines like "kick fused ass" appear
@ It’s not that they were bad words, they just seemed lame or out of place and caught me off guard. The therapist line man me role my eyes, and the lets kick some fused ass made me laugh at how lame it was.
I am in the middle of this mammoth and having a good time but it’s just me or these characters talk about their feelings a lot more than usual? Like sometimes it feels like a therapy session 😂
I dislike that Kaladin discovered talk therapy and and decided to call it therapy. He sounded like an after school special when Syl wanted to be a scribe. Major "And everyone clapped" vibes. I don't have a problem with the core idea, as Alethi society is changing and evolving. What I do have a huge problem with is the execution which was inorganic and ham fisted. Fortunately, Szeth, Adolin and Shallan made up for my disappointment in Kaladin. Shallan went from my least favorite POV to most favorite somewhere around Oathbringer.
@jessi4894 Shall an has gotten less annoying over time. You are spot on with Kal. Too many characters this time around speak as if they are talking at the camera.
I just want to know, what other cosmere books I need to read to be able to read book 5 with all the information I need. So far I've read: Elantris Warbreaker Mistborn Era 1 and of course every stormlight archive book and novela. I am currently thinking on starting mistborn era 2, but I want to know what else do I need to read to enjoy this to the fullest.
Read the Wax and Wayne books. They’re excellent. Book 5 in the Stormlight Archive though has severely damaged my expectations of the Cosmere moving forward. To the point I don’t think I’m going to continue reading Sanderson.
I only read The Way of Kings. I really wanted to marathon the series to prepare for Wind and Truth but maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan it is taxing to read large novels like these.
Hahaha absolutely! I reread the series this year and although it was absolutely phenomenal, it did take the majority of my time! So yeah, take your time! Sanderson will until we know more of the Stormlight world 🥲
*tl;dr:* The end does not matter; the journey does. *My personal, long, explanation of what I mean by the above tl;dr:* Don't treat the act of reading like a project, where only reaching the goal/end/destination matters, and this process' success is determined by successfully reaching a certain stable end / goal. Instead, treat it purely like a (constantly and unpredictably changing) process -- like one does while listening to music: a person may not know _how_ some piece of music is made/composed, but that doesn't stop anyone from enjoying that music, does it? Reaching the end doesn't matter. The journey to get there does. So, enjoy the _whole_ process, and not just wait or worry for the _Destination._ It'll come, in its time. The end will obviously not be perfect (nothing human is 100% perfect, even in a story with epic God-like heroism), but it does not matter because this isn't a project that you HAVE to complete. Instead, treat it like listening to music -- just enjoying the journey, however long it takes. Soak in the journey, the process, the emotional *music* of this world of Sprens/spirits. And it *is* an epic journey to take. So, don't be in a hurry to reach the end. Just trust that Sanderson's destination will be good enough, even if it never could be perfect (that's also one of the unstated themes of his story). Just the scope of Sanderson's ambition seen throughout the story is awe-inspiring in itself. The end, kinda, doesn't matter until you reach it. And it also kinda doesn't matter _when_ you _do_ reach it, since the journey was so f***king epic in itself. Reviewers "have to" treat the act of reading the book as a project. (Maybe; since this is their livelihood, so they have to use time-based end-goals. Doing so would allow them to be ahead of the curve, compared to other BookTubers, on the release of a book review.) However, for us, *this isn't work;* it doesn't require a deadline. It's a fantasy, i.e. it's not _really_ "real," and hence something for us to take really seriously, like Book-Tube reviewers have to, to be able to post a very comprehensive review before others. The reason it's not work/serious is that Sanderson's world is a sandbox; _a place to play._ So, stay a while; enjoy the journey; and don't worry about arriving at its end. After all, you aren't a reviewer. Neither am I. And... A life enjoyed isn't life "wasted." A good enough end *is* good enough, especially when the journey is soooo.... f***king epic (Remember how you felt when Camptain America touched the hammer-a sense of epicness that was worth the immperfect 10+ year MCU journey?) So, pick up the series and just have a *fun* time reading it and eventually, perhaps, talk with someone about the awe that this heroic journey inspires in you. Relax; there's no hurry.
I'd be careful linking to coppermind as "catchup" material as that page is likely to be updated soon with very Spoiler-y info. Either the new interpretations of those deathrattles or any new deathrattles in the book. Could perhaps add a link to the time machine page of the coppermind before that link so people can make sure they only get info pre-W&T
Ahh great idea! I will fix it as soon as I can - will keep it then through the pages of book 1 and 2 sharing the epigraphs which should be more neutral!
Hahahah no! I really invested a lot of time these last few days (since Friday!) - aaand started reading the prereleased chapters on Monday to be fair, which helped a lot! As circa 20% of the book was released already!
If you don't have a Kindle, I would start with bicep curls. I asked for a Kindle from Santa 😊. I'm getting to the end of Elantris. I got the 10th anniversary edition and it's like a textbook from school. If I get an ereader I may tackle Mistborn next. Maybe DragonWatch? I zipped through the Fablehaven series this summer so at some point I need to read DragonWatch. I prefer Fablehaven to Potter due to the pacing. I'll get to Storm light soon. Is there something before Mistborn I should read? Cheers!

By far the slowest is the Dalinar line, which is also frustrating because it has clearly the highest stakes and biggest questions for the viewer at the start of the book. Shallan's story provides the movement that was necessary to keep me from flipping ahead to see what happens.
Oh I actually felt it was all moving pretty quickly! Although the more advanced you are in the days, the crazier it gets! It isn’t the best SL book in my opinion tho!
Death rattles are visions of the future that one of the Unmade give people that are about to die. Sorry then! i thought it was important to mention that the book is not divided per parts as usual but per days (which we discover since the first pages)!
It was 4 out of 5 The writing quality has gone downhill massively - see days 1 2 and 3 1/3 of the book is just rehashing therapy / depression / multiple personality disorder with no resolution
The whole therapy side wasn’t my favorite. Also feel this book is somewhat easier to read and very straightforward with what Sanderson wanted to share through books 1-4!
@ Agreed - Honestly, Shallan is my favorite “main”character. I hate how Sanderson has made her so hated by parts of the Fandom. I love Renarin, Rlain, and Venli so much. I hope we get to see them all in the back half of the Series. The best part of this novel was the historical section focusing on Honor / Odium / Ba-Ado-Mishram etc. just fascinating…..
I'm about 300 pages in, and I feel it's his weakest work up to now. The dialogue has progressively slid in to snarky "reddit speak" with the speach patterns almost universally. It's hard to stay immersed in the story because of this and some other oddly-placed modern influences. The series was far more interesting when certain things were in the shadows and more obscure. Now, it's almost as if it's vomiting fan service and "member berries." (Remember this from that book? What about this from that book? Remember??) I am looking forward to seeing the conclusion, but it's been a tough read for me so far.
I think the more modern dialogue and particularly questionable humor mostly stops after day 2. There’s a few more occurrences later, but it felt noticeably less to me. “Therapy” is the big one that recurs, and I do personally think it’s a bit out of place. in the process of rereading/relistening 1-4. currently in the middle of oathbringer and cant wait to get to wind & truth
Hahaha I feel this is the best way to get into Wind and Truth! Rereading will definitely pay off! You’ll see!!

That was very diplomatic comment! 😅

Promise, it's an absolute rollercoaster
Great review, and i really want to read this, but Im struggling to get through Rythms of War!
