  • I’ve been mentioning a big trip I’m going on in April and have been getting so many questions I decided to go ahead and do a series!! The big trip is hiking to the base camp of Mount Everest! It’s been a big bucket list trip of mine so when the opportunity arose I couldn’t say no. I’m going with some of my family and friends! The trip is an 80 mile round trip hike. It will take us just shy of two weeks and we will climb thousands of feet in elevation-which is the hardest part. As such, my roommate and I have created a training program to help us get prepared! Since we’re still 8 months away, we’re starting small with simple hikes in our area and gathering basic equipment. So here is to part 1 of training!!!

I climbed Kilimanjaro this past year. One weird tip that can help train for the altitude is to actually use a straw to breathe through when hiking. It sorta simulates the thinner air

@@sidhayes6168 The higher up you go, the thinner the atmosphere gets. That means breathing in the same amount of air gets you less oxygen than at a lower altitude.

I climbed Kilimanjaro a few months ago! Definitely hiking occasionally is great training. There isn’t really a way to prepare for the altitude except to drink tons of water and walking very very slowly so you can acclimatize on the trek. Can’t wait to follow along your progress!

There is zero medical evidence that drinking a lot of water helps with altitude. Just makes you to pee more.

I think you could do a video in which you rewatch this and the other Everest prep video(s) and react to them.
"Yes, this was very useful", "No, I wish I had done that differently", etc.
I mean, I see you did an after-Everest video, but I think a reaction to the prep videos would also be very interesting, at least to me.

I just moved from practically sea level (300 ft or so) to 8000 ft give or take. I did a hike, which was probably 1.5 miles up and I had to stop very frequently to catch my breath. We were walking pretty slowly too. I can't imagine not being able to recatch your breath.

I'm starting my Everest Base Camp in 3 days times!
In terms of training, our guides recommend you should reach the point of having a good 'foundational' fitness - gym, jogging, swimming, anything to keep active
The best tip, is wear weighted vests on very lonnng walks and hikes

The best training, I did was to experience altitude sickness before you go and experience it there. Go somewhere where you know you can control it and get it treated. So that the first time it happens it is not on Everest, and you are aware what is happening and don't start panicking as well. The trip also helps to test your gear as well.

Highland sickness is awful, it varies from one person to the other. Idk if they sell this in the States, but you can buy this spray cans that actually have oxygen, so you can inhale it if you are feeling terrible. It is not the same as taking an oxygen tank, but it saves you of critical moments.
