STRYKER SR A10 Magnet Mount Antenna. A Great New Antenna For My Winter Car.

  • After installing the great 102 whip on my old Toyota T100, I heard a lot of comments about equally great smaller antennas. These folks had a point. Location does help a lot when placing an antenna on your car, so maybe a shorter antenna placed in the perfect spot can work as well as the 102.
I set out to find out, and researched what the internet thinks is the best mobile antenna on the market.
Meet the STRYKER SR-A10. It's mean looking, pretty large, and IT LIGHTS UP!
I'll do a range test with it, and we can all get to see if it really stacks up!

In my mobile antenna testing, I found that any antenna length over 54" (which is 1/8 wavelength on 27 Mhz) performs almost as well or as well as a 102" whip provided that the antenna's loading coil's Q is high enough - which means large diameter wire, not enclosed by metal, large coil diameter, etc... The lower the Q the more loss.
All antennas that I tested under 54" were progressively worse the shorter they were, and the shorter they were the more they acted like a dummy load and not an antenna. That makes sense.

I put two of these Strykers with a mirror mount shaft on my work truck (2021 KW), they are nothing short of awesome. Previously had those spiffy looking black and gold anniversary edition Wilson 2000s but was having a terrible time transmitting and getting SWR readings low enough. The factory fiberglass sticks weren't much better to begin with. Added ground straps, new coax, the whole nine yards. Still had issues with transmitting. Then rain started getting inside the coil.. finally got fed up and got those Strykers. No issues at all with a nearly flat SWR, great transmit and awesome recieve when paired with my peak/tuned Galaxy DX 979. The lights are pretty damn cool too (they really don't suck any extra power either).
Kind of a shame, because I remember my father really getting out there with a pair of much older Wilson 2000s with his old Cobra 29 and a Texas Star all mounted in his old KW. Maybe they're not made like they once were..?
Yes, the Stryker may look/sound gimmicky because of the lights, etc. but they're really worth every penny. I even pulled apart one of the coils before installing, just to see what its all about. Its solid. No reason it can't last a good while and then some 👍

I agree that the original Wilson antenna's were very good. I ran a 1000 Mag mount for 17 years. I also have the 2000 & 5000 Mag. But about 7 years ago I switched to the Audio 5000 PL Mag. And Wow, what a difference. It's tuned from 26.950 with a 1.7, 27.185 with a 1.5, 27.555 with a 1.0, 28.500 with a 1.5, and 28.700 with a 1.7 SWR. Without a tuner. I see over 30 miles with it on top of my Mini van. And my Grant XL on AM. I was so pleased that I now own 3 of these antenna's. And with a small LDG tuner I can do 10-40 meters. And years ago we learned that lights reduce range of antenna when I ran the old Antenna Topper Lights. 73

Anything that 'kinda makes me feel young again', must be a good starting place. The whole idea of CB, is to be fun. I know in my youth, it was great reading the mags, and buying both mobile and Base station equipment, to trial, and reach ever greater results. The sheer innocence of driving up to a local high spot, at night, to try and catch that American skip, sure looks like time well spent. I am glad l rode that wave in '81, l was 13.

I since the 70's I have used a number of mag based antennas, K-40 Wilson and others. I kept going back to the radio shack which gave me the lowest SWR and really got out even if I accidentally put out 150 watts. Recently I bought the Stryker SR A 10 and i love it. Strong magnet to hold it in place. The whip is a little taller than RS but seems a little more flexible. I am running a stock Galaxy DX99V on it and really pleased. Low SWR and easy to tune. I think you are going to be very happy with this antenna.

Furthest signal I have got was about 1300 miles. My radio is a uniden bearcat 980. I’m still playing with it tho. And I am new to cb so I’m sure someone like yourself could really dial it in. 4:40 - The Wilson 1000/5000 work exactly like the Stryker in terms of separating the magnet base from the coil/antenna. The Stryker is based on those antennas. Additionally the K40 base load antenna also can be disconnected from the magnet mount base in a similar fashion.

We used to do the lights up thing back in the late 70s and early 80s by attaching one lead of a neon bulb to the tip of the antenna and soldering a small round washer to the other. We would either then in case that in some clear plastic tubing or just let it fly loose. They worked extremely well. You do have course have to compensate for the change in the electrical length of the antenna by adjusting the overall whip length for a good SWR

Personally I prefer the Wilson line. I used to run with a Wilson 500 and it worked flawless. I now use the Wilson 1000 and it gets me out and receives very well. As far as removing the base coil on either the 500 or 1000 they also come off and have a protective cap on it. As far as looks go I find the Wilson Magnetic base antennas aesthetically pleasing where as the Stryker looks like something out of a Sifi movie. Who needs the lights on it. The little Will is the only Wilson magnetic antenna that you can not remove the base.

There's something new going around about this anntenna I also have one there's a guy who runs a CB shop he claims if you're going to use the magnet Mount to take off the rubber boot if you do not take off the rubber boot you may have problems like squealing microphones and other problems so He suggests take the rubber boot off the bottom of the magnet so you can achieve a better ground his customers were having issues with the antenna when they took off the rubber boot the problems are. Gone the funny thing about this it doesn't say nothing in the instruction book about this but I'm glad the guy figured it out

A loading coil in a CB antenna does not "wind up the rest of the 102" as you state. A short antenna has capacitive reactance. The loading coil provides inductive reactance, which at resonance, exactly cancels the capacitive reactance of the antenna. The length of the wire in the coil depends on the diameter and wire spacing to achieve the correct inductance.
An antenna that is too long has inductive reactance.

  • @electromechanicalstuff2602

First thing I did was removed the blue led. Then I removed the Rg8x and installed a tuned Rg400 1/2 wave coax, then I bought a 65" whip then tuned it to get the perfect resonance at ch20. 1.1 SWR from ch1- ch40. It's pretty flat right out of the box at 1.3-1.4 SWR but using a vna or mfj-269 you can see it's actually tuned for 28.500 mhz area. Needs to be longer. Now I just ordered a breed love 3" so239 puck for direct mount. Anything over 150 watts I've been told will burn the paint. I'm not doing that much but that tells me there is some energy lost in heat at the mag mount if it's doing that. I can go 25 miles on the mag mount and a stock barefoot 955 to a base station with this antenna

I ran two different Sirio Performer 5000's. Performance was outstanding. I truly thought it was the best thing out there. However, about about 3 months installed on the roof of the truck, the metal portions of the base showed severe signs of corrosion and deep pitting. I contacted Sirio through email, included pictures of the issues and the little scratcher tag that came with the antenna. Sirio sent me another one from their USA distributor. I thought that was awesome. When the replacement arrived, I installed it and it performed just as well as the old one. Three months later..... corrosion again. Same deep pitting. I contacted Siroi again, and they once again sent a new antenna. Great customer service and support. But the metal they use does not hold up well at all. It like "pot metal". If it was stainless steel, or if they made an optional SS version, I would buy it in a heartbeat. I know have a new one sitting on the shelf, and 3 Sirio log antennas as well for future use.

This antenna is awesome. It doesn't need a spring, it has a really strong magnet mount. It lights up (Mixed feelings about that), it has decent coax thickness compared to the thin coax used by so many other manufactures. The connector comes apart so you can feed it through smaller spaces, or you can drill a smaller hole. The antenna unscrews from the base, and it has a screw on cover to protect the connections when the antenna is removed. It will handle the power average hobbyists will throw at it. The antenna is 6.5 ft tall. What's not to love about this?

I've tried lots of different antennas.
I used a Comet quad band for a while for 70cm/2m/6m/10m. I use an FT-857D for my mobile radio, but after I broke the third 10m coil, I retired it.
On 10m, I use it for local comms when the skip propagation isn't rolling. It's a great band, and in my opinion, performs better over local terrain than 2m.
With the available 100w of the 857, I have no problem getting out, though I keep it dialed down when qso'ing around town.
I tried to replace the whip with a Wilson Trucker on another mount than the ball, with the intention of using my 40m hamstick there, but couldn't get it trimmed for a good SWR and went back to the old reliable.
I'm still using a stainless steel whip, trimmed for 28.3-29.7mhz, so it's cut to 99". Perfect SWR over that frequency range. I'll have to look into that antenna, I miss forty mobile.
Short of spending big bucks on a screwdriver antenna, with my high breakage rate, I stick to simple, and inexpensive. The stainless steel whip is pretty much indestructible.

That's the one I'm using. It's on an old window A/C unit, turned on it's side for added height, out on my deck. I was getting high SWRs but then added two "radials". I had a couple of spare Wilson 1000 whips so I laid them on the base and they're held in place by those nubs sticking up around the antenna. I tried doing an "X" with them but got better results with them running east/west.

Mike Cricket113 that's cool you got a stealth mode going on. You should try and get the ground plane kit for the 102 whip and mount it outside on the back edge of your roof. I'm operating a 102 inch whip as a base station. I made four ground plane radials out of 10 guage braided copper wire tied them off like guy wires. The 102 whip transmitts just as good as an antron 99. If I had four more ground plane radials I could hear just as good as an antron

I know most antennas have pros and cons. The main con to a mag mount is, be sure you take the magnet off your vehicle every so often and clean the magnet and clean where it sits. Moisture does get under magnets and can cause problems. It can cause swr problems as well as it can rust where it is mounted.

Took it to the tech and he ended up stripping it completely down and tested everything. There was nothing wrong with it, so he put it back together and tried it on his truck.(In place of his 102 whip) Couldn't get SWR's lower than 2!!! Gave it back to me and said "I don't know"! Mag mount rules, mirror mount sucks...and I mean SUCKS! Maybe someone else had good luck with theirs. I don't care, because mine ain't worth a crap! Bought a mag mount, now everything is fine and it loves a Sweet Sixteen driven with a variable Texas Star 350!

Have you had any concern from local law enforcement regarding the blue light? In my neck of the woods, it’s prohibited to install blue or red lights on civilian vehicles and I was wondering if this would be an issue down the road, whether that involves traveling around town or crossing State lines. I will reluctantly approach my local police department to ask about this yet I’m wary of bringing any unwanted attention. Love your videos. I suppose I could just watch where I’m keying up. I’m a recent subscriber and I’m considering a purchase of the Stryker SR A10 Magnet Mount Antenna solely based on this excellent video. Thank you.

These are really nice. Are they bad to mess up the paint underneath the magnet?
I had a lil Wilosn leave a circle in the top of my mini van paint and it only gets on there on road trips.

Let presume your aware of the take down aspect of the PL-259. No need for a bodacious hole to be drilled to pass the coax PL-259. Can't say the diameter of the inner threads for certain, but I guess 3/8"D versus 5/8" of the PL-259. Pretty neat and thoughtful.

OH looking forward to this, thank you! Just for the record I did want to mention a few things: As a happy owner of a Wilson 1000 mag mount, I can say the Wilson 1000 does indeed screw on and off just like your Stryker A10. The Wilson 1000 appears to also have a very similar if not identical mag base, and the little "weather cap" looks to be the very same also. Actually the packaging looks very similar to the Wilson packaging too which is interesting. Anyway, my experience with the Wilson 1000 on the center of the metal roof of my SUV or Van I routinely get contacts in excess of 10 miles with other mobile users, and have conversations with a base station over 14 miles away. I really enjoy your CB videos and look forward to your real world performance test!

Nice antenna but the lights ruined it.👎
The last thing I need is to give a cop any reason to pull me over for unauthorized blue-lights on a personal vehicle.
Would have been nice to see the entire antenna on the vehicle (not just the base coil area).

Would not be legal in NY. Blue light on top of vehicle is emergency vehicle. Also anxiously awaiting more of the GMRS midland videos. Maybe you could do a clip explaining how the repeater channels work as well as repeaters. I run a wilson 1000 with preseident andy. But looking into the stryker 94 with wire clip.

Here's one question I'm sure you never get. How do you keep from crimping or crushing the magnetic mount antenna coax if you have to run it between the door jam and door seal ?

    • @FarpointFarms
      @FarpointFarms  Месяц назад

Good question! I take the rubber seal on the door frame and pull it free. Once it is out of the way, I take an angle grinder and cut a notch in the metal of the door frame big enough for the cord to sit in. Then I put the seal back in place. No leaks and no crushing of the cord!

Many many years ago there used to be whip end lights you could attach that would light up when you keyed up. I had one for a while for a bit of fun. But always wondered if it subtracted from the transmit power. Will be interesting to see your findings.

It'll get you a pretty hefty ticket here, and if they want to be assholes, they can take you to jail in some places for displaying blue lights - or red in some areas. I'm not trying to get pulled over for something that looks cool (and it does look cool!)

My Wilson magnet mount does the same thing and has an identical cap that covers the base looks like they copied them, what are the differences between this Antenna and a Wilson for different frequencies, for example I run a Galaxy 88 HL, it has Fm, plus how many watts can you run through the Stryker? I hope you can do a video about these things and talk about Cost. If I'm not mistaken Wilson also has same Coil design.
